Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of Themed English Teaching Materials, specifically integrating Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) within a TAGANA (short for Taruna Siaga Bencana, or Disaster Preparedness and Response Volunteer Team) theme to bolster junior high school students motivation and proficiency in English. Addressing the need for innovative educational methods in English teaching, this research fills an existing gap by developing and assessing TAGANA-themed materials that incorporate a HOTS-PBL approach. The study carefully selected 24 English teachers from Bengkulu, Indonesia, using purposive sampling to ensure diverse representation in qualifications, experience, and teaching methods. This study evaluates the materials content validity and instructional efficacy using the five-stage ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. The results show that incorporating HOTS and PBL into thematic teaching materials greatly enhances students English proficiency and motivation, especially with themes like TAGANA. Expert validation affirmed the strong content validity of the materials, and data from both the experimental and control groups demonstrated significant improvements in learning outcomes. The integration of HOTS and PBL into thematic teaching materials provides valuable insights into global educational practises. By fostering students higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills and incorporating the theme of TAGANA, this approach offers a progressive methodology for English education. This model makes significant contributions to educational practises globally.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the problem of integrating Pancasila student profile with Islamic Religious Education materials through the implementation of content differentiation learning in elementary school. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects include teachers, principals, and students from several elementary schools in the research area, while the object of study is the implementation of content differentiation in PAI learning. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. Data analysis was conducted interactively through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured using source and method triangulation. This study found that integrating the Pancasila Student Profile with Islamic Religious Education (PAI) materials through content differentiation is hindered by limited teacher understanding, lack of planning time, and insufficient resources. The causes include low teacher competence, an unsupportive curriculum, and weak collaboration. Recommended solutions include teacher training, curriculum development, and strengthening stakeholder collaboration. The conclusion highlights the importance of improving teacher competence through continuous professional development, creating practical guidelines for content differentiation, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to provide adequate resources. The study recommends intensive training for teachers and the development of a curriculum that supports the implementation of content differentiation, aiming to shape students' character in alignment with the values of the Profile of Pancasila Student.

Abstract

REAP strategy offers a systematic approach to address challenges face by the students in reading activity. The strategy is divided into managable stages: Reading, Encoding, Annotating, and Pondering. This study aimed to identifying students’ perceptions of the Implementation of REAP strategy on their reading comprehension among 11th-grade EFL grade students in Palembang through a qualitative approach. The interview method chosen was semi-structured to give more insight into the research. The data was collected from students' perceptions of the implementation of the reap strategy which was analyzed using thematic analysis which found that the REAP strategy facilitates understanding of text, REAP encourages content review and retention, REAP promotes comprehension by rephrasing key ideas, REAP increases engagement and attention during reading, REAP facilitates personal connections and critical thinking, lengthy process of REAP and time-consuming implementation of REAP. The REAP strategy effectively improved students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. However, the challenges of its time-consuming and multi-step nature suggest the need for adjustments to its implementation. Educators should consider providing additional guidance during the more complex stages, such as annotation and pondering, and incorporating time management strategies to make the process more efficient and accessible for all learners.

Abstract

Writing remains one of the most challenging skills for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, particularly in organizing ideas coherently and expressing them clearly. In Indonesian senior high schools, students often struggle with paragraph development due to limited strategic guidance and reliance on standard teaching techniques. To address this issue, this study investigated the effectiveness of the PLEASE (Pick–List–Evaluate–Activate–Supply–End) Strategy in improving the writing achievement of eleventh-grade students of MAN 2 Palembang. A quasi-experimental method with a quantitative approach was applied, involving two groups: one experimental group receiving PLEASE strategy instruction and one control group with teacher’s strategy. The writing test was administered before and after the treatment and evaluated through descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including independent and paired-sample t-tests. The results revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group and a notable difference between the experimental and control groups. These findings indicate that the structured and metacognitive nature of the PLEASE strategy effectively enhances students’ ability to plan, organize, compose, and refine paragraphs. Future research may explore its application across different writing genres or integrate it with digital media to optimize writing instruction in diverse EFL contexts.
