Abstract

Phatic communication refers to small talks that aim to form ties of personal union between people or the speakers. Especially in this digital age, phatic communication is somehow still used. This research aims to uncover the kinds and functions of phatic communication used by Indonesian students who have been doing online classes through Facebook, responding to their classmates‘ material presentations, and having discussions in the comment column. This current study employs the qualitative method with the document analysis technique. The data of this recent study is the phatic communication used by students during the online course through Facebook, and the data was examined through document analysis techniques from the students‘ Facebook comments activity in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences related to phatic expressions. Moreover, the data was analyzed through the following steps: 1) labeling the related data; 2) classifying the data into its types and functions; 3) interpreting the data findings; and 4) drawing conclusions.The study‘s main finding is the appearance of phatic expressions, for instance, greeting, thankfulness,compliment, apology, encouragement, and wishing to each other. As the typical conversation is made online through social media platforms such as Facebook, we suggest that some language or conversation styles like abbreviations, non-standard spelling, and emojis have also appeared.

Abstract

The gender status in ELT (English Language Teaching) textbooks for Eleventh Grade Students is examined in this study. The study goals are as follows: to determine what gender position is equal in the textbook Pathway to English and to identify what male and female roles are appropriate for their gender position in the textbook. Content analysis was employed as the study approach. The data from this study were studied in six areas of gender, and they are: Female or male graphical depiction or illustration, female and male characters who play professional/occupational roles, proper nouns, pronouns, common nouns, and titles are all stated as female or male. Female and male role models: The number of role models, female/male activities are any actions performed by a female or a man. The pattern of mentioning female/male names refers to female and male characters in the same sentence. The data shows that the numerical representation of females in this book is less than males in all aspects.

Abstract

This research study aimed to examine the talks of male and female EFL teachers. This study aims to determine how male and female EFL teachers realise mood differently and how they recognize it in their discussions and roles as teachers. The plan was to use a descriptive-qualitative research design. Observation, audio recording, and field notes were used to collect data. Mood structure analysis was used to analyze data. To provide a more detailed analysis, utterances are classified based on their description, meaning, and code. This study's findings are: (1) A male teacher found 26 statement mood utterances, 26 interrogative mood utterances, 20 declarative mood utterance variations, and 2 offer mood utterances. Meanwhile, female teachers identified 23 statement moods, 17 interrogative moods, 5 commands, and 1 offer moods (2) for using mood structures in male and female teacher discourse; statement and interrogative moods are the most often employed moods during the teaching and learning process. (3) the most widely utilized kind of mood structure is declarative. It happens because teaching is a teacher's primary responsibility.

Abstract

People communicate with each other with some intentions. Nowadays, information can be easily accessed through social media. Unfortunately, the platforms cannot understand the semantic and pragmatic features. To achieve effective communication, speech should be performed and interpreted accordingly. This article will discuss the illocutionary acts in Nadiem's speech. The speaker's purpose can be understood comprehensively by analysing the illocutionary acts. The present study is a descriptive-qualitative analysis. The main focus of this study is the illocutionary speech acts performance. The video gathered was about Nadiem Makarim, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, presenting the Education Transformation in Indonesia. The video was taken at the Education World Forum, London 2023. The researchers then transcribed the video, analysed the illocutionary speech acts, specified the types, and evaluated the corresponding frequently used speech acts percentages to derive the conclusions. It can be found that Nadiem Makarim has performed 107 utterances. The utterances used are categorised as assertive speech acts, which is prevalent up to 82 utterances. The other illocutionary speech acts presented are expressive, consisting of 14 utterances, ten directives utterances, and one commissive speech act. It can be concluded that the most frequently used illocutionary speech act in the speech is assertive, which takes accounts into 76.6%. There were not any declaratives illocutionary speech acts found

Abstract

Manual recording of production results in small and medium-sized industries (SMIs) often leads to errors and delays in reporting. This study proposes a solution in the form of an automated production information system based on a web platform, integrated with Load Cell sensors and the NodeMCU ESP8266 microcontroller, utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT). The developed system aims to improve efficiency and accuracy in the production data recording process by automating the measurement of weight and quantity of items in real-time. The methodology includes the design of the IoT system architecture, integration of the Load Cell sensor with NodeMCU ESP8266, development of a web service based on PHP/MySQL, and data validation through calibration and system testing. The testing results show that the system successfully records the weight and quantity of items automatically. In this research, the weight of the items is 5 grams and then stores data on the web server, and displays reports in real-time. The system is also effective in reducing human error and enhancing production efficiency. Further testing indicates that the sensor integration and web interface operate stably, with measurement accuracy reaching 99.5%, an error rate of 0.5%, and a response time of 0.2 seconds. Therefore, this system is suitable for implementation in small to medium-sized industries as a solution for more efficient and accurate production automation.Pencatatan hasil produksi secara manual di industri kecil dan menengah (IKM) sering kali menyebabkan kesalahan dan keterlambatan dalam pelaporan. Penelitian ini mengusulkan solusi berupa sistem informasi produksi otomatis berbasis web yang terintegrasi dengan sensor Load Cell dan mikrokontroler NodeMCU ESP8266, berbasis Internet of Things (IoT). Sistem yang dikembangkan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan efisiensi dan akurasi dalam proses pencatatan data produksi dengan mengotomatisasi pengukuran berat dan jumlah barang secara real-time. Metode yang digunakan mencakup perancangan arsitektur sistem IoT, integrasi sensor dengan NodeMCU ESP8266, pengembangan web service berbasis PHP/MySQL, serta validasi data melalui kalibrasi dan pengujian sistem. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa sistem mampu mencatat berat dan jumlah barang secara otomatis, pada penelitian ini berat barang dibatasi hanya 5 gram yang kemudian menyimpan data ke server web, serta menampilkan laporan secara real-time. Sistem ini juga terbukti efektif dalam mengurangi human error dan meningkatkan efisiensi proses produksi. Pengujian lebih lanjut mengindikasikan integrasi sensor dan antarmuka web berjalan stabil, dengan tingkat akurasi pengukuran mencapai 99,5%, error rate 0,5%, dan waktu respons 0,2 detik. Dengan demikian, sistem ini dapat diimplementasikan pada skala industri kecil hingga menengah sebagai solusi untuk otomatisasi produksi yang lebih efisien dan akurat.

Abstract

This study delves into the complex and contentious debate over language policy in primary education, focusing on the inclusion of English language instruction. Using a discourse analysis approach, the study delves into multifaceted arguments and counterarguments related to adopting English as a primary language of instruction in early childhood education. A qualitative descriptive research design with content analysis and discourse analysis techniques is used in the methodology. A Content Analysis Worksheet and a Transcription Template are among the research tools used to analyze YouTube videos about the removal of English as a mandatory subject in Indonesian primary schools. Findings reveal a range of viewpoints among stakeholders, including educators, government officials, and citizens, with regional perspectives from Bali emphasizing the practical importance of English in a tourism-centric environment. The discussion highlights the importance of clear communication, consideration of regional contexts, balancing academic requirements, and long-term planning in shaping effective language policies in primary education.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding the types of teacher talk and learner talk that occur in the classroom. The research design was a descriptive qualitative method. The data source of this method was the English teachers who teach ninth-grade students of 176 Junior High School Jakarta. The data collection technique of this research was doing observation classroom and conducting an interview. The objective of this research was (1) To find out the types of teacher interaction that occur in the classroom (2) To find out the types of students interaction that occur in the classroom. This study applied observation and interviews in collecting the data. The result of the research showed the teacher-student interaction was interactive. The teacher used the teacher to talk to deliver material to the students, and students responded to the teacher. The aspect of the teacher talk employed 3 categories, and the learner employed 3 categories in the classroom interaction during the teaching-learning process. Teacher talk occurs in the classroom is lecturing, especially giving facts or opinions about content procedures and Giving their explanation. Students talk occurs in the classroom is students talk initiation specially Expressing own ideas and the interaction between teacher and students in the classroom interaction interactive they made good interaction each other.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the process types of the transitivity system from the reading passages and conversational texts of the EFL textbook entitled Modul Pengayaan for seventh-grade junior high school students, which is composed based on the implementation of Kurikulum 2013. The present study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data of this study are obtained from reading texts and conversational texts (text dialogues). The collected data of the transitivity process presented in sentences and clauses were analyzed using Halliday's transitivity system. The results show that all the process types of transitivity system with 35 processes were found in the reading passages and conversational texts of the textbook, namely: material process with 5 data (14.28%), mental process with 12 data (34.28%), verbal process with 3 data (8.57%), relational process with 13 data (37.14%), behavioral process with 1 data (2.85%), and existential process also with 1 data (2.85%). All the types of transitivity processes have been presented adequately based on Halliday's theory, although the two types of transitivity process (behavioral and existential process) almost have come from ignorance. Therefore, this study suggests that the textbook designer and material developer produce diverse clauses and sentences by using the six process types of transitivity in English written texts, especially in the reading passages and conversational texts.

Abstract

Each language community has a unique disagreement strategy in online communication that reflects its cultural values and communication norms. Disagreement can be expressed differently depending on the medium used. In face-to-face communication, disagreement tends to be expressed indirectly and with mitigation. In online communication, disagreement tends to be expressed explicitly and without mitigation. This study describes the strategies for expressing disagreement in the Info Cegatan Jogja Group and the factors that cause the emergence of various disagreement strategies in the group. The study used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze sentences expressing disagreement in posts from the ICJ Facebook Group.  The data sources were message walls and comment fields. The study identified four types of disagreement strategies: one-speech strategy, two-speech strategies, three-speech strategies, and four-speech strategies. Verbal communication is the primary strategy employed to express disagreement among ICJ members. The study found that most disagreements are classified as strong, based on the level of confrontation. Various disagreement strategies were identified, which can be attributed to factors such as social media dynamics, posting topics, gender dynamics, and cultural influences. Understanding strategies for managing disagreements and cultural norms surrounding it is essential for successful communication.

Abstract

This research aims to discover multicultural values using semiotic analysis in an English textbook. This research is qualitative methodology. The sample of this research is an English textbook under the title ''Big English 5'' used in a private primary school in Indonesia. The data were gathered by documentation of the signs in texts and pictures in that English textbook and were analyzed by using semiotic analysis used Barthes's theory (1977) by integrating various theories to get the multicultural values represented in the English textbook. The findings showed that the texts and pictures represent each multicultural value covered in Big English 5. In addition, the most frequent multicultural value was found about Appreciate Other People's Cultural Products (AOPCP) with eleven items. The other most frequent multicultural value was found about International Cultural (IC) with eleven items. The multicultural values represent in the English textbook in pictures and texts consist of the things, places, foods, and traditions. Unfortunately, the Source Culture (SC) related to Indonesian culture was found merely two items, even though young learners use that English book at a primary school in Indonesia. In conclusion, the English textbook of Big English 5 contained multicultural values which could support young learners' English language process. However, this English textbook needs to add the content of Indonesian culture as the user of that English textbook. Hence, it could acquaint the Indonesian culture through English learning for young learners earlier. Besides, the role of English teachers and students becomes necessary to utilize the English textbook appropriately by designing activities that entangle multicultural values and the use of the English language during the learning process.
