Abstract

This study aims to (1) determine the kind of grammatical cohesion devices that were used in a news item text of a textbook (2) to examine how reference, substitution, ellipses, and conjunction were used to describe the Cohesion that was used in the news item text of an English textbook for senior high school students in the 12th grade "Symphony 3". This study is qualitative descriptive research. The analysis of data found that the grammatical cohesion devices in the news item text of the textbook are reference, conjunction, and ellipsis. References become the most common devices, followed by conjunction and ellipsis. Surprisingly, there is no substitution found in this text. Hence, substitution and ellipsis are the two most minor common forms of cohesive devices. It demonstrates that the two types of coherent devices have no use in written discourse. The news item text of the textbook is written cohesively "good" as the percentage is 61 % for the reference. In comparison, 38% for the conjunction is categorized as "fair." This textbook is considered an objective criterion of cohesiveness. It may be fascinating to analyze these in separate studies in spoken discourse, particularly spontaneous speech.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the President's speech text as a critical discourse analysis taken on the Indonesian Republic Secretariat Cabinet website, conveyed by Ir. Joko Widodo as the 7th president of the Republic of Indonesia. The methodology used by the researchers was a descriptive qualitative method. This textual content analysis is base on Van Dijk's design by which the research unit section is divide into three parts: macro-structure, supra structure and microstructure. The study revealed that the textual content was analyzed thematically or the discourse's subject in the macro-structure. The theme of Jokowi's speech was about Indonesia's excellence. It can be seen clearly from almost all the paragraphs in the statement stating one general subject, namely, about Indonesia's superiority. Then, for the supra-structure, Jokowi's speech text is divided into three main elements: opening, content, and closing, which consisted of two opening paragraphs, eighteen content paragraphs, and two closing paragraphs. The last was microstructure. It was analyzed in a semantic way, which refers to the text's social meaning and the language modes used in the text. Semantically, the text of Jokowi's speech was analyzed from its setting, detail, intention, and presupposition. From Jokowi's information, this expression shows that the speech's overall form contained all the speeches delivered by him; opening, filling, and closing. What has become very clear to set Jokowi apart from many other international public figures is that he uses simple language. The things that Jokowi has brought can be an excellent lesson for people when speaking in front of the audience. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Jokowi’s Speech Text, Van Dijk’s Design

Abstract

This paper sheds light on investigating the lexical cohesion on an Indonesian singer song entitled Coke Bottle by Agnez Mo. Lexical cohesion constitutes linguistic devices that help to create cohesiveness of the text. Lexical cohesion occurs when two words or more in a text are semantically related somehow – in other words, they are related in terms of their meaning. This study's design was a descriptive qualitative that attempted to elaborate the discourse analysis about lexical cohesion in Coke Bottle song by Agnez Mo. Some steps were conducted to collect the data, firstly, the lyrics that become the documentation were collected by the researcher from lyrics.com, secondly the researcher read the lyrics to understand the text. Thirdly, marking some words included as lexical cohesions in which they will be the real data of this study. The findings revealed that reiteration and collocation are found in the song, but the antonym that is part of reiteration is absent. Above all, repetition is the most commonly used in this song, especially the word I. This seems to indicate that the songwriter tried to make the song's lyrics match the music's beat, so the song became easy listening, and the listeners can enjoy the music.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the visual components of a Pearson primary school English textbook. By applying visual semiotic theory to the visual aspects (Barthes, 1977), this research demonstrates that the EFL textbook has three kinds of multicultural values: respect for other people's traditions, appreciation for women's equal rights, and appreciation for other people's viewpoints. Three photos exemplified respect for other people's traditions, one exemplified gratitude for women's equal rights, and two exemplified appreciation for another person's viewpoint. Additionally, two visual components identified in this research are classified as source culture (SC), four visual elements are classified as universality culture (UC), and there are no visual elements that reflect target culture (TC). The current study discovered that the EFL Pearson textbook for Indonesian primary school continues to have an asymmetric depiction of multicultural values.

Abstract

Writing serves as a tool for students to extend their grammatical composition, enrich their lexicon, and increase other language abilities, such as reading, listening, and speaking. This study intends to examine written features and analyze frequent errors of students' grammar in writing. Employing a qualitative descriptive research method, the samples were chosen based on convenience samples. The participants were high schoolers studying at their Year 10, whose English language competence is at an average grade. The students practiced descriptive writing and grammar rules. Four students submitted their essays analyzed using content analysis. The assessment criteria were analyzed using a framework of grammatical errors by James (1998), which classify errors into nine (9) categories (prepositions, articles, singular/plural, adjectives, irregular verbs, tenses, concord, possessive case, and passive/active). The study found 73 errors in students’ writing. The top three errors found were prepositions, articles, and tenses, in a particular order. The next identified errors were singular/plural, concord, possessive case, and irregular verbs. Some pedagogical implications deriving from the study were also highlighted. The present study suggests the need for EFL teachers to improve their skills in marking and giving feedback toward student writing. This will, in turn, improve students’ writing skills.
