Abstract

This study aims to explore the conceptual understanding of shapes through the integration of STEM with Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in enhancing elementary students' understanding of two-dimensional shapes and developing the Pancasila Student Profile. The research approach of this study is qualitative. Data collection techniques employed in this study include interviews, observations, and analysis of student work. The subjects of this research are three second-grade students who face difficulties in understanding the concepts of two-dimensional geometry. The research findings indicate that the STEM-integrated PjBL approach can The research findings describe that after the STEM integrated PjBL approach students can fulfill 4-7 indicators of concept understanding, namely presenting concepts in various mathematical representations, developing necessary and sufficient conditions for a concept, using, exploiting and selecting certain operations and applying concepts to problem solving Additionally, PjBL-STEM fosters character development pancasila student profile such as collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.

Abstract

Pentingnya geometri berdampak pada suatu keharusan bagi mahasiswa matematika untuk menguasainya. Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan di lapangan, diketahui bahwa mahasiswa matematika masih mengalami beberapa kesulitan dalam menyelesaikan masalah geometri. Dari Kesulitan yang terjadi tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa skeptis dapat mengubah jawaban yang sudah benar menjadi salah dan dapat memperkuat keyakinan terhadap jawaban yang sudah benar. Hal itu menunjukkan bahwa perlu adanya kajian mendalam tentang peran skeptis dalam menyelesaikan masalah geometri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peran skeptis mahasiswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah geometri ditinjau berdasarkan gender. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif karena digunakan untuk memahami isu-isu rumit suatu  proses yang selalu berkembang dinamis. Jenis penelitian ini adalah studi kasus. Kasus yang dibahas dalam penelitian ini yaitu kasus yang berdampak fundamental terhadap belajar geometri mahasiswa. Subjek penelitian ini ialah delapan yang terdiri dari 4 perempuan dan 4 laki-laki yang mengalami skeptis terhadap jawabannya. Data penelitian ini berupa jawaban tertulis subjek, hasil rekaman wawancara, hasil rekaman think outloud, dan catatan Peneliti. Data-data tersebut dihasilkan oleh sumber data penelitian ini, ialah subjek penelitian. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Peran skeptis mahasiswa laki-laki dalam memecahkan masalah geometri yaitu meneguhkan jawaban yang telah dituliskan dan menghentikan proses menjawab mahasiswa sehingga tidak diperoleh jawaban yang lengkap dan benar, (2) Peran skeptis mahasiswa perempuan dalam memecahkan masalah geometri yaitu meneguhkan, menyesatkan dan membenarkan jawaban yang telah dituliskan.The importance of geometry makes it mandatory for mathematics students to master it. Based on field observations, it is known that mathematics students still experience several difficulties in solving geometry problems. The difficulties that occur indicate that skepticism can change correct answers to wrong ones and can strengthen belief in correct answers. This shows that there is a need for an in-depth study of the role of skepticism in solving geometric problems. This research aims to determine the role of skeptical students in solving geometry problems, examined from gender perspective. This research uses a qualitative approach because it is used to understand complex issues in a process that is always developing dynamically. This type of research is a case study. The cases studied in this study are cases that have a fundamental impact on student geometry learning. The subjects of this study were eight consisting of 4 women and 4 men who were skeptical about their answers. The data for this study were in the form of the subject's written answers, recorded interviews, recorded think outloud, and researcher's notes. These data are generated by this research data source, namely the research subject. The results of this study indicate that: (1) The role of male student's skeptical role in solving geometry problems is to confirm the answers that have been written and stop the student's answering process so that a complete and correct answer is not obtained, (2) The role of female student's skeptical in solving geometry problems namely confirming, misleading and justifying the answers that have been written.

Abstract

The teacher's self-regulation in solving problems with contradictory information needs to be investigated because this certainly has an impact on students' self-regulation abilities. However, research related to this is still limited. Problem with Contradiction Information (PWCI) is appropriate to view self-regulation. This research is a case study which involved teachers in East Java, Indonesia and already have an educator certificate. There are 24 teachers as participants of this research, 14 females and 10 males. The objectives of this study describe how the teacher's response when completing PWCI and how the teacher's self-regulation when solving PWCI. Data were collected through tests and interviews. The results show that (1) There are two types of teacher responses in completing PWCI, the first type is the teacher who answers the questions directly without checking the provided information, the second type is the teacher who is thorough and cross-checks before working on the questions, (2) The emergence of self-assessment teacher regulation when completing PWCI is divided into four, namely, teacher self-regulation appears at the stage of understanding, implementing, re-checking and does not appear when completing PWCI. Most of the teachers are not aware of the contradictions in the questions given.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is one of the essential competencies that must be developed from an early age because it plays an important role in forming students’ critical and logical thinking skills. However, students’ abilities in this aspect are still low, one of the influencing factors being the limited facilitation of HOTS questions provided by teachers. This study aims to determine: (1) the comparison of HOTS and LOTS questions made by teachers; (2) teachers’ understanding of HOTS questions; and (3) teachers’ difficulties in compiling HOTS questions. This study employed a qualitative research approach with a qualitative case study. The respondents consisted of 6 teachers selected based on certain criteria. Data were obtained through interviews and reviews of daily test documents, with a total of  51 questions analyzed using the revised Bloom’s taxonomy framework. Data analysis referred to Miles and Huberman’s stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the percentage of HOTS questions appearing in teachers’ daily test items was still low. Only 4 out of the 51 analyzed questions (8%) were classified as HOTS questions, while the remaining items were categorized as lower-order thinking skills (LOTS) questions. In addition, only 1 teacher (17%) correctly understood the definition of HOTS questions, while 5 teachers (83%) did not. Teachers also experienced difficulties in developing stimuli and finding references related to HOTS questions. These findings indicate that teachers require structured training in distinguishing procedural application questions (C3) from authentic HOTS tasks at the C4–C6 levels.

Abstract

Despite decades of curriculum reform, persistent gaps in Indonesian mathematics education remain. Students are taught mathematics formally, yet consistently fail to demonstrate higher-order reasoning abilities. Both national and international assessments confirm that mathematical critical thinking skills encompassing the ability to evaluate arguments, investigate claims, and draw logical conclusions remain a critical weakness, particularly at the junior high school level. This situation is further compounded by the minimal use of digital technologies such as GeoGebra and Scratch in everyday classroom instruction. This study conducted a preliminary investigation into the mathematical critical thinking abilities and mathematics learning experiences of Grade VIII students in Cirebon Regency (West Java) and Pamekasan Regency (East Java), serving as the empirical foundation for the development of the FJIMEC (Focusing, Justifying, Investigating, Messaging, Evaluating, Concluding) instructional model integrated with GeoGebra and Scratch. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, the study involved 128 students and four mathematics teachers. The critical thinking test results were concerning: mean scores of 41.2 for Cirebon and 39.8 for Pamekasan, with 84.4% of students falling in the low category. The weakest indicators were Evaluating and Concluding. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed no significant between-region difference (p = 0.412), indicating a systemic deficit. Questionnaire analysis revealed low technology utilization (M = 2.43/5.00) and high mathematics anxiety. These findings provide preliminary empirical support for developing a FJIMEC–GeoGebra–Scratch instructional model.

Abstract

The specific objective of this study is to reveal and describe the ethnomathematical elements found in the traditional game of snakes and ladders. This study uses a qualitative approach that links mathematical concepts to the local cultural context. Data analysis in this study was carried out in three main stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Based on the results of the observation, it was found that the traditional game of snakes and ladders contains various ethnomathematical elements that can be utilized in mathematics learning. These elements arise naturally during the game according to the applicable rules. The traditional game of snakes and ladders contains various mathematical concepts, such as numbers, geometry, probability, and game rules that reflect mathematical activities.

Abstract

This Community Service Program (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat/PkM) aimed to enhance teachers’ pedagogical and professional competencies through training on the development of creative and innovative learning media based on Problem Based Learning (PBL) by utilizing GeoGebra at MI Islamiyah Sumur Putih, Pamekasan. The program was conducted in response to teachers’ needs for learning media that are not merely conventional, but capable of fostering active student engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in line with the demands of 21st-century learning. The implementation method employed a training and workshop approach consisting of needs analysis and observation, delivery of materials on PBL concepts and the use of GeoGebra as an interactive learning medium, hands-on practice in designing PBL-based learning media, presentation of the developed products, and joint reflection and evaluation. The results indicated an improvement in teachers’ understanding of PBL implementation as well as practical skills in designing and applying GeoGebra-based learning media that are creative, innovative, and contextual. The interactive and participatory nature of the activities also encouraged a shift in learning paradigms from teacher-centered to student-centered approaches. The program received positive responses from the partner school and is expected to have a sustainable impact on improving the quality of teaching and learning processes in the madrasah.
