Abstract

Scientific reasoning is currently considered the central of goal for development of 21 st century people. Scientific reasoning is important factor in science learning. This studyaims to examine the effect of gender and age influenced student’s scientific reasoning ability. This research was a descriptive quantitative. The samples of the result were 200 students(female=100, male=100) on first year physics education class of Tadulako University in Palu,Indonesia with the age range was 18-20 years old. The data on student’s scientific reasoningability were taken from a multiple choice test on scientific reasoning ability using LawsonClassroom Test of Scientific Reasoning (LCTSR). Lawson was administered to investigatestudents’ scientific reasoning ability in six constructs namely (1) Conservation of Mass andVolume, (2) Proportional Thinking, (3) Control of Variables, (4) Probabilistic Thinking, (5)Correlational Thinking, and (6) Hypothetical-deductive Reasoning. The results showed that nostatistical difference between male and female scientific reasoning mean’s scores wereobserved. The gender and age do not significantly impact on students’ scientific reasoningability for each construct. In addition, the lowest mean score for the students’ reasoning abilityfor both genders was control of variable.

Abstract

Secondary science teacher may come from various science competencies’ background. Teacher with Physics, Biology, and Chemistry competencies’ background should teach science comprehensively. MGMP based lesson study is one of schools’ effort to help science teacher to discuss teaching material. The objective of this study is to investigate knowledge construction of secondary teacher on science content during lesson study. This descriptive study was designed with 3 cycles of lesson study which consist of 3 times of plan. Do and see for every single cycle. The participant comes from same school with various science competencies’ background teacher. Field note, video and its transcript are used to identify the characteristic of teachers’ knowledge construction. Verbal communication or critical dialogue among science teacher during plan and see phases are described to show classification of knowledge construction. Furthermore, dialogue between students and teacher during do phases are discussed to categorize type of class dialogue. The result of this study show that science teacher with different competencies’ background tend to re-construct their science knowledge while the other stand on cognitive imbalance.

Abstract

This study aims to compared virtual lab with real lab. The experimental research design was used in this study. Compared two different treatments in the experiment testing the protein content in food materials. This study resulted in differences in results between laboratory trials by virtual lab procedures with virtual labs. This research was also conducted on real laboratories that produce differences (1) facts showed in virtual laboratories and real laboratories, (2) the process of changes that occur in experiments. The virtual lab can’t present all objects/event that appears in the real lab. In conclusion the real lab more potential to appeared concrete and relevant facts than virtual lab.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the implementation of the experimental method in science learning and the obstacles faced by teachers, as well as to identify the application of pre-lab in science learning. Research design was survey which is non-experimental quantitative research. The participants were 26 teachers who teach subjects in the sciences, namely Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Science as integrated subjects. Data were collected through online questionnaires using google forms and were analyzed descriptively. The results show that experimental activities have not been fully applied to science learning. Most teachers provide the tools and materials needed in learning activities in the laboratory and provide work procedures to students. The constraints that are faced by teachers in applying the experimental method are related to facilities and infrastructure, student characters, and experiment time allocation. Most of the teachers have also carried out pre-lab activities, but they are still dominated by lectures from the teacher. This study also explored the pre-lab model to be developed, almost all teachers agreed if the pre-lab was developed in the form of virtual learning. The forms of media that teacher’s interest in for pre-lab activities are videos and android applications

Abstract

This study aims to determine the benefits of the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) program based on the partnership, technology, and ethnoscience approach to improving the TPACK of science teachers. It was conducted for 3 months from September to November 2021. The subjects consisted of 28 science teachers in Nagekeo Regency spread over 6 districts. This study was conducted using 2 methods, online and offline. In the online method, teachers met via Zoom to analyze the concept of science in Nagekeo cultural activities, adjust the concept to basic competencies, and evaluate the results of learning implementation in the classroom. In the offline method, teachers met directly to, in group, design a culture-based science lesson plan, and 4 teachers mutually agreed to carry out direct learning in class using the designed lesson plan. The results of the pretest and posttest of science teacher knowledge on indicators in the TPACK components were analyzed. The results demonstrated a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results of the TPACK components. The pretest results showed an average value of 39.89 in the low category while the posttest results showed an average value of 88.24 in the high category. These results indicate that the TPD program based on the partnership, technology, and ethnoscience approach is useful in improving the TPACK of science teachers.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the contribution of the Citizen Science Project (CSP) program to the species literacy of pre-service biology teachers. Using a quasi-experimental method with a Citizen Science (CS) approach, this study involved 82 participants from two campuses who were recruited voluntarily in two different projects. A total of 68 participants were involved in Project I (monitoring of insect pollinators of mango (Mangifera indica) inflorescence) and 14 participants were involved in Project II (monitoring of butterflies in citrus (Citrus amblycarpa) plantations). Species literacy test and a questionnaire were used as data collection instruments. The species literacy test consists of 14 items of species identification questions for Project I and 12 items of species identification questions for Project II. The questionnaire was used to determine the perception and evaluate the learning outcome (LO) of the CSP program. The data were analyzed statistically and described according to the research findings. The results showed that species literacy in pre-service biology teachers improved in the moderate category. Most participants perceived that the CSP program could improve knowledge, attitudes, and skills about species. The LO evaluation of the CSP program showed that the indicator of participants' interest in science and environment increased higher than the others. The program can be used as an alternative in increasing species literacy in the public.
