Abstract

One of the exciting topics in the socio-scientific issue is cloning. This issue is seen as a debatable issue in religion and science. In the practice of science learning in class, Biology teachers are required to be able to present this topic proportionally. This research aims to study how the arguments of Biology teachers in Islamic organization-based senior high schools in Indonesia face the cloning issue of sacrificed animals. This research was conducted in three Islamic organization-based senior high schools. This research uses the qualitative method by observation process on the learning of cloning topic in the class, questionnaire, and an in-depth interview with Biology teachers of XII grade from the three different schools in Banten Province, Indonesia. Results of the research show that related to the cloning issue of sacrifice (Qurban) animals is not only related to the religious aspect; there is the existence of specific argumentation patterns in the mind of the teachers. The designs are presented in the frameworks of economic (Organization A), social humanity (Organization B), and knowledge (Organization C). These three frameworks of organization give the primary colors for each teacher's argumentation. Thus, further studies must explore the effects of Islamic organizations on the arguments and the practice of cloning topic teaching at Islamic organization-based senior high schools.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the contribution of the Citizen Science Project (CSP) program to the species literacy of pre-service biology teachers. Using a quasi-experimental method with a Citizen Science (CS) approach, this study involved 82 participants from two campuses who were recruited voluntarily in two different projects. A total of 68 participants were involved in Project I (monitoring of insect pollinators of mango (Mangifera indica) inflorescence) and 14 participants were involved in Project II (monitoring of butterflies in citrus (Citrus amblycarpa) plantations). Species literacy test and a questionnaire were used as data collection instruments. The species literacy test consists of 14 items of species identification questions for Project I and 12 items of species identification questions for Project II. The questionnaire was used to determine the perception and evaluate the learning outcome (LO) of the CSP program. The data were analyzed statistically and described according to the research findings. The results showed that species literacy in pre-service biology teachers improved in the moderate category. Most participants perceived that the CSP program could improve knowledge, attitudes, and skills about species. The LO evaluation of the CSP program showed that the indicator of participants' interest in science and environment increased higher than the others. The program can be used as an alternative in increasing species literacy in the public.

Abstract

This study investigates teachers' learning in technology-ethnoscience professional development for 3 months and its impact on science teachers' TPACK in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)-Indonesia. These secondary school science teachers participate in PD that focuses on communication of information technology and ethnoscience-based materials and their applications in designing and conducting classroom instruction. Five science teacher instruments (n=28) were used, i.e. TPACK test questions, lesson plan analysis rubric, teaching observation sheets, response questionnaires and interview guides. Data is collected before, during, and after program implementation which is carried out every week. Descriptive statistics and Paired Sample T-Test were used for analysis. It was found that teachers' TPACK increased after studying in the program with significant benefits. In addition, the ability to design and implement learning changes to be more oriented towards technology-ethnoscience integration, but the benefits are not significant for all science teachers. This study suggests that teachers' PD programs in the future need to consider aspects of integrating technology in learning and the process is carried out not only when the program is run, but continues every day in class so as to create habits for science teachers. Indonesia currently needs more longitudinal PD to ensure that TPACK is integrated in science teaching and its usefulness for student learning outcomes

Abstract

Citizen Science (CS) activities are currently a new trend in science gathering and research. Butterflies have an essential role as pollinator insects whose existence is currently under threat of population decline. CS activities can be a means to identify butterfly species in an area and take conservation actions. This study monitors butterfly biodiversity in lime plantations in Sindanghaji Village, Palasah District, Majalengka Regency through CS activities. This study involved (n=14) students who contracted conservation biology courses at Majalengka University. A sampling of butterflies was carried out in two areas of the lime (Citrus amblycarpa) plantation. Butterfly biodiversity data collection uses the swiping method and the total count technique. Identification of butterflies using the key of determination involves citizen scientists and comparisons on databases available at http://ftp.funet.fi/ and https://www.discoverlife.org/. The data analysis technique used quantitative methods with the help of the PAST (Paleontological statistics) application. The results showed that in garden area 1, there were 5 families, 18 genera, and 32 species with a total of 92 individuals; dominance index 0.936; the species diversity index is 3.065, the species evenness index is 0.691, and the species richness index is 6.635. As for garden 2, there are 5 families, 22 genera, and 38 species with a total of 175 individuals; dominance index 0.949; the species diversity index is 3.294, the species evenness index is 0.709, and the species richness index is 7.164. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the diversity of butterfly species in both areas is high, but no butterfly species dominates, so that the distribution is evenly distributed for each species. CS activities can be a solution in collecting, analyzing, and publishing research data on butterfly biodiversity.

Abstract

Misuse of food preservatives in the society is alarming that it is necessary to raise students’ awareness about the danger to their health. Educating children about healthy food requires more than just promoting understanding but more importantly practicing reasoning and decision making. This study analyses the impact of lessons designed to improve students’ understanding, reasoning, and decision making on the use of food preservatives. Participants of the study were 30 students of 7th grade junior high school taught by a teacher who has been trained on argumentation-based teaching strategies. During the lessons students were provided with dilemmatic cases that stimulate their thinking followed by discussion before finally making a decision. Data were collected prior and after the lessons using a three-tier test that require students to provide answers that consist of explanation, reason, and evidence. The study shows improvement of students’ understanding of the content, reasoning skills, and decision making. Moreover, the study also reveals that the majority of the students tend to view food preservatives from the usefulness side but ignore the danger. The findings suggest that argumentation-based teaching strategy results in students’ deeper understanding of the content, reasoning and decision-making skills. This study recommends that efforts to promote students’ awareness of food preservatives and healthy diet can be done through a systematic and well-planned teaching strategy that encourage students to reason and to think deeply about the positive and the negative sides of food preservatives

Abstract

This study aims to promote prospective biology teachers' Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) about Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) or TPACK-ESD through a School Biology Course. The course is an integrated course as it discusses essential biology contents for the school and the strategies to present the content to the students. It is urgent to promote prospective teachers' TPACK-ESD since the existing biology teachers are not prepared to integrate ESD into biology lessons. The study applied a descriptive method based on a seven-step model of Reorient University Curricula to Address Sustainability (RUCAS). Participants in this study were third-year prospective teachers who were taking the course. The effectiveness of this program for prospective biology teachers is drawn from Content Representation (CoRes) and lesson plans prepared by prospective teachers. The results showed that prospective teachers' TPACK-ESD improved from early development to developed level. It means that prospective teachers' TPACK-ESD is still at a low level. Although the program can improve prospective biology teachers' competencies in developing lesson plans, the level is still low. One semester intensive program seems insufficient to promote prospective teachers' TPACK-ESD. Therefore, it is recommended that the program for promoting ESD integration into TPACK-ESD is conducted for an extended time. The novelty of this study lies in the findings and the coverage of the research area. This study is the first to explore a strategy to promote prospective teachers' TPACK-ESD. More studies are needed, especially on teachers' education curriculum and professional development programs, to accelerate the development of teachers' TPACK-ESD.
