Abstract

Certain English sounds are absent from Indonesian, making pronating English diphthongs challenging for certain students. It is challenging for students to pronounce English diphthongs correctly due to various internal and external factors, including their ignorance of when to pronounce them based on their type and position. The researchers attempt to examine how difficult it is for the students and how they perceive English diphthongs based on the issue they are facing. This study's objectives are the most challenging diphthongs pronounced by students, the most difficult diphthong position, and the degree to which students struggle with pronouncing English diphthong sounds. The design of this study is quantitative and descriptive. Forty-two students comprise the study's sample, and their answers to an oral exam and questionnaire are used to gather data. The researchers found 97 errors in the closing type and 191 in the centring type of diphthongs uttered by the students. The most challenging position of diphthongs in their pronunciation is the centering position (eə, ɪə, ʊə). In addition, five factors are becoming the reason for students' difficulty in pronouncing English diphthong sounds. They are (1) the students have less confidence while pronouncing words, (2) each student has different and limited skills, (3) the lack of motivation from the students causes difficulties in the teaching and learning process, (4) the family environment is very influential in the language development of the students, and (5) the social environment is also one of the influences in the language development of the students. The implication of this study can be in the field of linguistics and education, for example, phonological theories and pedagogical strategies.

Abstract

Students often struggle with mastering vocabulary in their English learning journey, necessitating English teachers to seek solutions. One viable strategy teachers can adopt is the integration of crossword puzzles to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. Specifically, the study sought to determine if providing crossword puzzles to the SMP Negeri 3 Banawa seventh-grade students could enhance their vocabulary proficiency. To measure the impact of this approach, the researcher employed pre-test and post-test assessments as evaluation tools in a quasi-experimental study. Through purposive sampling, the researcher selected two classes, VII B and VII D, each with 29 students, as the study’s sample groups. Subsequently, data analysis revealed a significant disparity between the pre-test and post-test scores in the experimental class. Notably, the computed p-valued (two-tailed) was 0.000, falling below the predetermined significance level of 0.05, signifying the acceptance of the hypothesis. In conclusion, implementing the crossword puzzle in this study led to a noticeable improvement in the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Banawa.

Abstract

In pronunciation, students encounter significant challenges when it comes to stress. The majority of students often struggle with the accurate placement of stress in words. This research project seeks to identify the key aspects: the specific word categories that pose the most significant difficulty for students regarding stress placement, the syllable position where students commonly struggle with pronunciation, and the predominant types of errors made when attempting to pronounce stress in English. This research takes a quantitative descriptive approach to gather information about these three aspects. The study's target population consists of 250 students from Tadulako University, with a sample of 35 students chosen through purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out through tests and mobile phones as research instruments, and the data were subsequently analyzed using basic statistical methods within the Excel application. The findings reveal that verbs are the most challenging for students to pronounce among various word categories, with 53 errors observed. Regarding syllable position, the ultimate position is the most difficult for students regarding placing stress on pronunciation, with 20 errors recorded. In line with the linguistic category, the error was identified in verb (48%), noun (25 %), and adjective (27%) errors produced by students.
