Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the effect of tongue twisters can improve the pronunciation of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Lembo. A quasi-experimental design was employed with a sample of 64 students selected using random sampling techniques. Random sampling was chosen to reduce bias, produce a representative sample, facilitate statistical analysis, and allow for replicability of the research. Data were collected through writing tests administered twice as pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to the experimental group before the treatment, while the post-test was administered afterward. The researcher collected and analyzed the data using the formula proposed by (Cohen et al., 2007) and SPSS 22. The results indicated a significant improvement in the pronunciation scores of the experimental group, with a pre-test average of 51.56 and a post-test average of 77.97. In contrast, the control group showed a smaller improvement. The Mann-Whitney test revealed a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05), indicating that innovative teaching methods can enhance students' pronunciation skills. These findings suggest integrating interactive activities into English language teaching, and training for teachers is necessary to implement this method effectively. The study also opens up opportunities for further exploration of other variations of games in teaching pronunciation.

Abstract

This study analyzed the use of derivational suffixes that transform root nouns into adjectives in the writing of EFL students at Tadulako University. This study aims to identify the types of adjectival suffixes that are difficult to use and the common errors students make. Using quantitative descriptive method, data were collected from the students' writings and analyzed morphologically. The results show that suffixes such as -ful, -ous, -ly, -al, -ic, -able, -less, and -ive are frequently used. However, many errors were found, especially in choosing the wrong suffixes and in spelling. These findings highlight the need for more explicit instruction in morphological rules to help the students form words more accurately.

Abstract

Purpose – This study explores how syntax tree diagrams can help English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students better understand sentences that can be interpreted in multiple ways due to their structure. Structural ambiguity often confuses EFL learners, who may struggle to see how a sentence could have different meanings. While ambiguity in language is not new, there has not been much focus on practical ways to teach students how to deal with it.Methodology – Employing a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, this study involved 35 fifth-semester English Study Program students at Tadulako University. Participants received six sessions of instruction using syntax tree-based sentence parsing. Data were collected through a pretest, a post-test, and a structured questionnaire. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests to determine whether the method had a significant impact.Findings – The findings verified that students developed better skills to understand ambiguous sentences. The post-test scores exceeded pretest scores, and students demonstrated improved abilities to recognize how different sentence arrangements produce different meanings. The questionnaire results confirmed that students developed increased confidence through the syntax tree method, which helped them understand sentence structure.Contribution – This research demonstrates that visual tools, such as a syntax tree, provide valuable benefits for teaching English syntax to students. This research demonstrates that showing students sentence structure through visualization helps them understand complex grammar rules better. The findings present practical information for teachers who want to develop better classroom methods for teaching ambiguous sentence structures

Abstract

This research investigated the effectiveness of YouTube videos in improving the English-speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. Two groups participated in the reseach's quasi-experimental design: an experimental group that was treated using YouTube videos and a control group that was taught using conventional methods. Fluency and comprehensibility were the main goals of the speaking skills evaluation. A speaking rubric was used to collect the data through pre-tests and post-tests. Because of the non-normal distribution of the data, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann-Whitney U Test were used for analysis. The results demonstrated that the experimental group's speaking scores significantly exceeded those of the control group. While the control group's mean score only improved from 29.44 to 45.00, the experimental group's reached from 36.32 to 72.11. A substantial difference (p = 0.001) between the two groups was verified by the statistical analysis, suggesting that YouTube videos are a useful tool for improving students' English-speaking skills. According to the research, including digital resources like YouTube into English language instruction can foster a more stimulating and encouraging learning environment.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the dictogloss technique in improving the listening comprehension of eighth grade students at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu during the 2024/2025 academic year. Employing a pre-experimental quantitative design, the study involved all 25 students from the target class as participants. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test instruments, each comprising 10 fill-in-the-blank and 10 multiple-choice questions focused on narrative texts as a test. Dictogloss technique was implemented as the intervention, where students listened to passages, took notes on key points, and collaboratively reconstructed the texts. Statistical analysis revealed a significant improvement in students’ listening comprehension, with the mean score rising from 51.40 (pre-test) to 75.00 (post-test). The Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed normal data distribution, and paired sample t-tests indicated the improvement was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that dictogloss not only improves students’ ability to recognize spoken words and understand main ideas but also increases engagement, vocabulary acquisition, and collaborative skills. The study concludes that integrating the dictogloss technique into classroom instruction is an effective strategy for improving listening comprehension among junior high school students learning English as a foreign language.
