Abstract

Heavy metal waste pollution such as iron (Fe) has affected many clean water sources in Indonesia, so alternative solutions are needed to clean them, one of which uses adsorbents from avocado seeds. This study aims to determine the effect of avocado seed powder mass as an adsorbent on Fe metal levels in water and compare the effectiveness of adsorbents activated with HCl and H₂SO₄ solutions. The research method uses an experimental method which includes making adsorbent powder, activation process using HCl and H₂SO₄ solution of 1M concentration, adsorption process, testing with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), and data analysis through tables and graphs. The results showed that HCl adsorbent reached the highest capacity and effectiveness at a mass of 1 gram with an adsorbed Fe content of 7.83 mg/L and an effectiveness of 78.3%, while H₂SO₄ adsorbent reached the highest capacity at a mass of 5 grams with an adsorbed Fe content of 8.09 mg/L and an effectiveness of 80.9%. On average, H₂SO₄ adsorbent has a higher effectiveness (78.2%) than HCl (75.6%). In conclusion, although the addition of adsorbent mass affects the level of Fe adsorbed, the effect is not always linear, and adsorbents activated with 1M H₂SO₄ proved more effective than those activated with 1M HCl.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the high content of methylene blue dye waste in waters, which is difficult to overcome with conventional methods. In addition, not many studies develop environmentally friendly methods based on natural materials such as Moringa oleifera leaf extract to synthesize effective absorbent nanoparticles. This study aims to conduct green synthesis of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) using Moringa oleifera leaf extract. In addition, another objective is to test the absorption ability of Fe₃O₄ NPs towards methylene blue dye. The method used in this study is experimental. The experiment began with synthesizing Fe3O4 NPs through green synthesis and their characterization using XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis, and PSA. Next, an absorption test of Fe₃O₄ NPs was carried out against methylene blue solutions with variations in mass of 1 g, 2 g, and 3 g. The results showed the formation of Fe3O4 NPs based on the characterization results of Fe3O4 NP samples. XRD showed no sharp peak at 2 angle indicating that the material structure is amorphous. PSA analysis confirmed the presence of nano-sized material of 196 nm, as much as 34.7%. The FTIR spectrum showed the presence of C–H, C–O, C–C, and C–N functional groups, indicating the success of green synthesis. In addition, the presence of Fe–O functional groups in the range of 570–580 cm¹ also supports the formation of NPs. The results of the UV-Vis test of methylene blue solution that had undergone absorption by NPs showed a significant decrease in sample absorption along with the increase in NP mass, which was reinforced by a visual change in the color of the solution, which became clearer. In conclusion, the synthesis of Fe₃O₄ NPs through green synthesis can be an effective and environmentally friendly method for dye waste treatment. This research has important implications in developing environmentally friendly technologies for handling dye waste in waters, because it shows the potential for utilizing abundant and inexpensive natural materials as reducing agents and stabilizers for pollutant-absorbing nanoparticles.

Abstract

The Effect of Mutual Cooperation Values Towards People's Lifestyle in the Form of Maps. Mutual cooperation is a cultural value that becomes the identity and basis of the Indonesian nation. However, currently mutual cooperation underwent a shift that may affect the lifestyle of the Indonesian people, especially in this case individual behavior. The objective of this research is to study the effect of mutual cooperation towards people's individual behavior in Tamanan village, Banguntapan, Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) in the form of maps and its effect towards the individual behavior of the community. The research method used is qualitative and quantitative methods (mixed method). Qualitative and quantitative methods have been carried out through interviews and surveys with villagers in nine hamlets of Tamanan village. Based on the mutual cooperation map the results obtained from this study show that Kragilan, Kerobokan, and Glagah Kidul hamlets have the strongest mutual cooperation values, whereas Rejokusuman and Tamanan hamlets have the weakest mutual cooperation values. This shows that the strength of mutual cooperation does not depend on the proximity of the hamlets from the city of Yogyakarta. Moreover, the mutual cooperation map is reciprocal to the individual behavior of the people in the hamlets, i.e.: the stronger the mutual cooperation values the weaker the individual behavior.

Abstract

The accumulation of organic waste can cause various diseases and environmental pollution. One of the diseases caused by this is Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Organic waste such as durian peel waste contains carbon, which can be processed into carbon nanodots (C-dots). The C-dots from durian peel waste can be used as a basic ingredient for mosquito repellent spray because durian peel contains essential oils, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which are toxic to mosquitoes. The synthesis of C-dots can also reduce environmental pollution due to durian peel waste. The purpose of this study was i) to prepare and characterize C-dots from durian peel waste using UV-Vis and PSA tests, and ii) to identify the effect of the C-dots solution in a mosquito repellent test in order to determine the ability of the anti-mosquito spray. This was an experimental study on the preparation of C-dots from durian peel waste using the two-steps low heating (TSLH) method. The anti-mosquito spray was made of 3 ratios of C-dots mass to distilled water volume, i.e.: (0.1 g : 200 ml); (0.2 g : 200 ml); and (0.3 g : 200 ml). Based on the results of the UV-Vis and PSA characterizations, it was found that the absorption peaks of the C-dots were at the wavelength interval of 288–332 nm and the sizes of the C-dots were 178.6 nm (69.3%) and 54.1 (20%). The mosquito repellent test showed that the anti-mosquito spray could repel and eradicate mosquitoes at the best ratio of (0.1 g C-dots : 200 ml of distilled water) with the highest mosquito’s mortality of 11 mosquitoes in 17 minutes and 29 seconds. This proves that the C-dots from durian peel waste can be used as an anti-mosquito spray.

Abstract

The increasing demand for sustainable energy drives innovations in environmentally friendly renewable energy technologies, one of which is the Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (PMFC), which utilizes the biochemical activity of plants to generate electricity. This study examines the potential of PMFC as an eco-friendly energy solution and its relevance to Islami teachings on environmental conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. Experimental results show that the PMFC with Aluminium-Copper (Al-Cu) electrodes generates a maximum current of 0,396 mA and a voltage of 0,393 V, while the Aluminium-Zinc (Al-Zn) combination only produces 0,255 mA and 0,222 V. Additionally, wet soil conditions enhance the power output to 0,051 mW. This study demonstrates that PMFC can convert the chemical energy in plants into electricity without harmful emissions, aligning with Islamic principles that emphasize sustainability and the prevention of environmental damage.
