Abstract

English literature teaching plays a crucial role in developing students’ critical thinking, analytical skills, and appreciation for language and culture. However, effectively teaching literature can be challenging due to the complexity of literary texts and the diversity of student learning styles. To address these challenges, teachers need to employ a range of effective teaching strategies that engage students, foster deeper understanding, and stimulate their intellectual growth. By incorporating effective teaching strategies and considerations, English literature teachers can foster a love of literature, critical thinking skills, and intellectual growth in their students, making literature a meaningful and engaging part of their academic journey.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of code-mixing and code-switching by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) faculty members in the digital learning environment. While code-switching and code-mixing have been examined in various educational contexts, there remains a notable gap in understanding their intentional use within the digital learning environment, where faculty members deliberately alternate or mix languages to enhance clarity, engage students, and achieve specific teaching objectives in an online context. This study addresses this gap by examining how faculty members strategically employ these linguistic phenomena to enhance the learning experience in technologically mediated instructional settings. Employing qualitative research design and a case study approach, data were collected through documentation, observation, and semi-structured interviews. Two experienced EFL faculty members from a university in Malang, Indonesia, were selected as participants due to their expertise in code-switching and digital learning environments. The findings reveal complex code-mixing patterns, including inner, outer, and hybrid forms, while code-switching is observed in interlanguage transitions and shifts between formal and informal language. EFL faculty members intentionally utilize these linguistic strategies to enhance student comprehension. Switching between languages helps explain difficult concepts, clarify ideas, and foster better understanding. Bilingualism and situational context emerge as key factors influencing language choices in the digital learning environment, shaping the pedagogical practices for EFL educators. The implications of this study highlight the strategic role of language alternation in technologically mediated instructional settings, emphasizing its potential to enrich the pedagogical approaches of EFL educators in digital learning environments.

Abstract

English textbooks play a crucial role in English Language Teaching (ELT) and cognitive development, particularly through the questions they incorporate, which is essential in shaping students’ analytical and reasoning skills. Previous studies have investigated the cognitive demands of textbook questions, where Lower-Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) are more prevalent than Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This imbalance raises concerns regarding the effectiveness of textbooks in fostering students' critical thinking abilities. While these studies have primarily focused on specific sections or types of questions, there has been limited research examining the overall cognitive levels of all questions within a single textbook. This study aims to analyze the cognitive levels of the questions in the “English for Nusantara” textbook for eighth-grade students using Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. Using a descriptive content analysis method both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to classify and calculate the frequency of the cognitive levels.  The result of the study shows that the textbook is more inclined to LOTS than HOTS. In particular, comprehension (C2) was the most frequently used cognitive process (37.28%), followed by application (C3) (28.92%), while analysis (C4)  (11.50%), evaluation (C5) (3.48%), and generation (C6)  (8.36%) were used least frequently. This means that students are mostly engaged in the lower order cognitive processes such as comprehension and application. The study suggests that while the textbook supports basic language skills, it provides insufficient emphasis on critical thinking. Thus, curriculum developers and teachers should incorporate more HOTS-based questions to align with the Curriculum's objectives.

Abstract

Student engagement has critical impacts on students to excel academically. Integrating social media in a classroom can potentially affect students engagement. The present study aims to examine student engagement in EFL writing using Double-Entry Journal (DEJ) on Instagram, to examine the correlation between cognitive engagement and achievement, and to reveal the challenges in implementing DEJ. The researchers employed a mixed-method design, involving 42 undergraduate students from the English Department of one of the state universities in Indonesia, and obtained the data through questionnaires, writing portfolios, and Instagram documentation. The close-ended and open-ended questionnaires were distributed to the students, whereas writing portfolios and Instagram documentation were observed to examine the students writing performance. The collected data were managed, classified, and analyzed. The findings reveal that the students are behaviorally, cognitively, and affectively engaged by DEJ assisted with Instagram. There was a positive correlation between cognitive engagement and writing achievement. Yet, challenges had been found, including lack of interaction, student anxiety, and insufficient knowledge during the learning process. The challenges are lessened when teachers and peers offer support with DEJ. The results provide pedagogical implications for teachers to employ instructional strategies that promote engagement in all three dimensions, behaviorally, cognitively, and affectively to attain the students outcomes.

Abstract

Advancements in media technology have significantly reshaped the sharing and consumption of religious teachings, especially as Buddhist monks increasingly use social media platforms like Weibo in China and Facebook in Thailand to preach and engage with their followers. Some monks have gained considerable influence on these platforms, attracting large followings. While previous studies have noted the growing presence of monks on social media, their specific behaviors and strategies have not been extensively explored. This study addresses this gap by examining the practices of Buddhist monks in China, which is home to around 80% of the global Buddhist population, and Thailand, where approximately 93-94% of the population practices Theravada Buddhism. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the study analyzes the posts of eight prominent monk influencers—four from each country—between January 2017 and December 2019. The research findings reveal key differences in the content and strategies employed by Chinese and Thai monks. Chinese monks, such as Ven. Yancan, tend to share content related to their daily lives, social interactions, and public service activities, positioning themselves as social activists. In contrast, Thai monks primarily focus on Buddhist teachings, practices, and rituals, with less emphasis on secular topics. Additionally, Chinese monks are more likely to use multimedia formats, such as videos and live streaming, for real-time engagement, while Thai monks prefer textual content and speeches, focusing on delivering sermons and reflections. Public service activities also vary, with Chinese monks organizing large-scale charity events, such as donations and educational initiatives, while Thai monks engage in smaller, more localized acts of service, like offering food and aid to the community. These differences highlight the influence of cultural and political contexts, such as China's strict policy regulations and Thailand's structured monastic oversight. The study underscores how social media has expanded the reach of Buddhist teachings, allowing monks to transcend geographical boundaries and challenge traditional religious hierarchies. By adapting to new media, Buddhist monks are able to connect with younger, digitally engaged audiences and remain relevant in an increasingly digital world, offering valuable insights into the evolving landscape of religious communication in the digital age.

Abstract

This research focuses on the psychological well-being of EFL students living in university dormitories. Entering university marks the transitional period for the young generations. Through this transition, students faced new challenges such as making independent decisions about their lives and their studies, and engaging with various new people in the academic environment of a non-synchronous learning environment. In this context, research into the wellbeing of EFL students during university intermission is necessary to understand the impact of university environments and specific programmes such as compulsory residence on the well-being of students, especially those studying English as a foreign language (EFL). this study utilized a quantitative descriptive approach, with questionnaires as the primary data collection tool. Through this approach, the researcher aims to objectively describe the perspectives and experiences of the participants. The quantitative data obtained from structured questionnaires were analyzed to provide a comprehensive overview of the theme of student well-being within the context of this research. The findings from this study provide valuable insights into the psychological well-being of EFL students in a boarding university environment, analyzed through Ryff''s six dimensions of psychological well-being: autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, self-acceptance, purpose in life, and positive relations. Overall, the results indicate that students exhibit a high level of autonomy, environmental mastery, and self-acceptance, with particularly strong scores in personal growth. However, areas such as environmental mastery (specifically campus resource utilization), social engagement, and self-expression highlight opportunities for further support and improvement.
