Abstract

This study investigates the benefits of literature on the talent development and self-confidence of high school students participating in extracurricular English Club. Literature, derived from the Sanskrit word 'shastra', serves as a guide and source of information and includes various forms such as drama, poetry, tales, and speeches. Recognizing the importance of literature in developing talents and self-confidence, this study examines the role of extracurricular English Club in creating a supportive environment for students. Extracurricular activities, including English Club, play an important role in the character and academic development of young people. In response to the growing importance of English proficiency, some educational institutions have introduced English extracurricular programs to showcase students' potential and interests. This study, conducted at MAN 1 Kota Malang, East Java, used a descriptive qualitative approach to assess the impact of English clubs on students' literacy skills, self-confidence and talent development. The results showed that the English club at MAN 1 Kota Malang focuses on improving students' English skills, especially speaking. Through speaking, poetry, storytelling and drama exercises, students develop their imagination, analytical ability and general communication skills. Literature-oriented exercises help students overcome shyness, fear of making mistakes, and anxiety, and improve self-esteem. The study concludes that incorporating literature into extracurricular activities not only improves language skills, but also contributes to the development of talent and self-confidence, which are crucial for future success.

Abstract

The difficulties that students in the English Education Department encounter when attempting to accurately pronounce words using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) are examined in this study. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with students who were familiar with IPA. Significant challenges are shown by the data, such as trouble connecting symbols to sounds, a lack of practice opportunities, and a lack of instructional tools. Students recognize the value of IPA in enhancing pronunciation in spite of these obstacles, and they indicate a great desire for a more comprehensive and engaging education. To improve IPA education, suggestions include using audio-visual aids, doing more practice sessions, and utilizing collaborative learning techniques. These results offer insightful information for enhancing phonetics instruction and helping students gain self-assurance and pronunciation skills. What makes this study important is its focus on the practical challenges faced by students in mastering IPA, an area that is critical for language educators yet often overlooked in curriculum design. By identifying specific barriers and proposing targeted solutions, this research provides a unique contribution to phonetics instruction. Furthermore, it emphasizes the role of innovative teaching methods in building students' confidence and pronunciation skills, offering a foundation for future studies aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practical application in English education.

Using qualitative descriptive methods, this study involved interviews with English teachers at the English Tutoring Centers for Cruise Students in Bangkalan to investigate the integration of music in the development of pronunciation skills in English language learning. The main goal is to identify the experiences, benefits, and obstacles faced by educators and students when using music as a tool to develop pronunciation skills in English language learning. Researchers show that music integration is an innovative and effective approach that presents a fun learning atmosphere, correct English pronunciation, and increased motivation in English learning. Despite facing challenges such as accent differences and intonation speed in the pronunciation of words in music, this study confirms the great potential of music in improving pronunciation skills in English language learning. Continuous efforts in adapting learning strategies and providing support and advice are essential to maximize the benefits of using music in the development of pronunciation skills and pave the way for improved English language learning.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of code-mixing and code-switching by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) faculty members in the digital learning environment. While code-switching and code-mixing have been examined in various educational contexts, there remains a notable gap in understanding their intentional use within the digital learning environment, where faculty members deliberately alternate or mix languages to enhance clarity, engage students, and achieve specific teaching objectives in an online context. This study addresses this gap by examining how faculty members strategically employ these linguistic phenomena to enhance the learning experience in technologically mediated instructional settings. Employing qualitative research design and a case study approach, data were collected through documentation, observation, and semi-structured interviews. Two experienced EFL faculty members from a university in Malang, Indonesia, were selected as participants due to their expertise in code-switching and digital learning environments. The findings reveal complex code-mixing patterns, including inner, outer, and hybrid forms, while code-switching is observed in interlanguage transitions and shifts between formal and informal language. EFL faculty members intentionally utilize these linguistic strategies to enhance student comprehension. Switching between languages helps explain difficult concepts, clarify ideas, and foster better understanding. Bilingualism and situational context emerge as key factors influencing language choices in the digital learning environment, shaping the pedagogical practices for EFL educators. The implications of this study highlight the strategic role of language alternation in technologically mediated instructional settings, emphasizing its potential to enrich the pedagogical approaches of EFL educators in digital learning environments.

Abstract

English textbooks play a crucial role in English Language Teaching (ELT) and cognitive development, particularly through the questions they incorporate, which is essential in shaping students’ analytical and reasoning skills. Previous studies have investigated the cognitive demands of textbook questions, where Lower-Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) are more prevalent than Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This imbalance raises concerns regarding the effectiveness of textbooks in fostering students' critical thinking abilities. While these studies have primarily focused on specific sections or types of questions, there has been limited research examining the overall cognitive levels of all questions within a single textbook. This study aims to analyze the cognitive levels of the questions in the “English for Nusantara” textbook for eighth-grade students using Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. Using a descriptive content analysis method both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to classify and calculate the frequency of the cognitive levels.  The result of the study shows that the textbook is more inclined to LOTS than HOTS. In particular, comprehension (C2) was the most frequently used cognitive process (37.28%), followed by application (C3) (28.92%), while analysis (C4)  (11.50%), evaluation (C5) (3.48%), and generation (C6)  (8.36%) were used least frequently. This means that students are mostly engaged in the lower order cognitive processes such as comprehension and application. The study suggests that while the textbook supports basic language skills, it provides insufficient emphasis on critical thinking. Thus, curriculum developers and teachers should incorporate more HOTS-based questions to align with the Curriculum's objectives.

Abstract

Student engagement has critical impacts on students to excel academically. Integrating social media in a classroom can potentially affect students engagement. The present study aims to examine student engagement in EFL writing using Double-Entry Journal (DEJ) on Instagram, to examine the correlation between cognitive engagement and achievement, and to reveal the challenges in implementing DEJ. The researchers employed a mixed-method design, involving 42 undergraduate students from the English Department of one of the state universities in Indonesia, and obtained the data through questionnaires, writing portfolios, and Instagram documentation. The close-ended and open-ended questionnaires were distributed to the students, whereas writing portfolios and Instagram documentation were observed to examine the students writing performance. The collected data were managed, classified, and analyzed. The findings reveal that the students are behaviorally, cognitively, and affectively engaged by DEJ assisted with Instagram. There was a positive correlation between cognitive engagement and writing achievement. Yet, challenges had been found, including lack of interaction, student anxiety, and insufficient knowledge during the learning process. The challenges are lessened when teachers and peers offer support with DEJ. The results provide pedagogical implications for teachers to employ instructional strategies that promote engagement in all three dimensions, behaviorally, cognitively, and affectively to attain the students outcomes.
