Abstract

Abstract

Oil palm production efficiency plays a crucial role in maintaining productivity and sustainability amid fluctuating yields and increasing input use. This study aims to measure the technical efficiency of palm oil production at PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV Regional V West Kalimantan, one of the largest plantations in the region. The method employed is non-parametric statistics, utilizing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with an output-oriented approach and the Variable Return to Scale (VRS) assumption, based on panel data spanning five years (2019–2023). The study encompasses two divisions (Afdeling I and II), each comprising six different planting years to represent variations in plant age and productivity. Input variables include land area, labor, number of trees, NPK fertilizer, and plant age, while the output variable is fresh fruit bunch (FFB) production. The results showed that most plantation divisions with old and young planting years experienced production inefficiencies. Technical inefficiency is influenced by the distribution and management of inputs that are not yet optimal, as well as by the decline in plant population due to pest and disease attacks. These findings offer valuable insights for enhancing input allocation, optimizing field management, and promoting the sustainability of palm oil production in the future.

Abstract

Oil palm plantations are often confronted with the problem of uncontrolled land expansion and suboptimal management, which potentially threaten the sustainability of the business from environmental, social, and economic perspectives for surrounding communities. This condition calls for a comprehensive evaluation of management practices implemented by independent smallholders. This study aims to determine the sustainability status of smallholder oil palm plantations in Parindu Subdistrict, Sanggau Regency, assessed from five main dimensions: ecological, economic, social, institutional, and technological. In addition, the study analyzes attributes that have sensitivity levels affecting the future sustainability of oil palm farming as a basis for formulating improvement strategies. A total of 36 respondents were selected using purposive sampling techniques and in-depth interviews. The research method employed was quantitative descriptive using the Rap-Palmoil approach and qualitative descriptive supported by kite diagrams to clarify the analysis results. The findings indicate that the management status of oil palm plantations falls into the moderately sustainable category, with MDS values of 53.61 for Embala Village and 55.75 for Maju Karya Village. Abstract

In general, corn cultivation carries a number of risks, such as price and production risk. The risks will influence farmers' behavior in facing farming risks. The objectives of this research are: 1) to analyze the risk level of sweet corn farming on peatlands. 2) analyze farmers' behavior regarding the risks of sweet corn farming on peatlands. The research method used was purposive sampling, where samples were taken from 82 farmers in Rasau Jaya Satu Village. Data collection was carried out through interviews with questionnaires. The data analysis used is farming risk analysis using the coefficient of variation (CV) and farmer behavior towards risk using quadratic utility function analysis. The research results show that the production risk obtained is 0.11 0.5 and the income risk is 0.11, meaning that the farming risk faced by corn farmers is small. Overall, the majority of sweet corn farmers behaved in a risk-averse manner (risk averters) amounting to 52% or as many as 43 people while the remaining 48% or 39 people behaved boldly towards risks (risk takers).

Abstract

The palm oil industry in Indonesia faces problems and criticism for causing deforestation, destroying biodiversity, employing minors, and violating human rights. This problem limits access for Indonesian palm oil to the European Union. To overcome this, the ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) Certification Program was established by the Indonesian government with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil in the world market. However, there are still a limited number of independent farmers who have obtained ISPO certification. This is due to a lack of information and knowledge regarding the application of ISPO principles and criteria, as well as a lack of socialization regarding the importance of ISPO certification among independent farmers. This research aims to determine the level of knowledge and effectiveness of implementing the ISPO certification program, as well as analyze the extent to which elements of knowledge influence the effectiveness of this program. The research used a quantitative descriptive method with 87 ISPO-certified independent farmers in Sintang Regency as respondents. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SMARTPLS 4.0 software. The research results show that the level of farmer knowledge is in the "good" category. The effectiveness of implementing the ISPO certification program is also classified as "effective," with elements of knowledge that have a significant effect on effectiveness, including understanding, synthesis, and evaluation. In contrast, knowledge, application, and analysis do not affect the effectiveness of implementing the ISPO program.

Abstract

Food loss and waste have become a critical global concern, particularly in the context of ongoing hunger issues worldwide. It is estimated that nearly one-third of all food produced for human consumption is ultimately discarded. In Indonesia, food waste occurs across multiple sectors, with households contributing the largest share approximately 63.64%, or around 77 kg per capita annually. Sambas Regency, a coastal area in West Kalimantan, is also confronted with challenges related to waste disposal behavior and management systems. In Paloh District, the volume of waste entering coastal areas reaches approximately 963.60 tons per year, indicating a significant level. This study is essential as it seeks to examine socio-demographic characteristics and household behaviors related to food waste among coastal communities in Sambas Regency. Data were collected through surveys and structured questionnaire interviews involving 100 respondents in Paloh District. The analysis employed the Spearman rank correlation method. The findings reveal that socio-demographic variables such as education level, income, expenditure, and household size are associated with food waste behavior. Key drivers of food waste include excessive cooking practices, inadequate storage methods, poor meal planning, inaccurate estimation of food needs, and cultural practices during certain events that encourage food disposal behavior.

Abstract

The skincare sector has many prospects due to the growing public awareness of skin health. Indonesia's cosmetics industry grew by 20.6% between 2021 and 2022, according to data from the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM). The XYZ skincare products, which originated in Pontianak City, West Kalimantan, and are derived from aloe vera, are among the most well-liked items from this trend. This study examined how the marketing mix impacted Pontianak City's purchases of O-degree products. Pontianak City was chosen for this study because it is a hub for aloe vera farming and is renowned for generating high-quality goods. The study's sample size was 100 customers aged 17 and older who had bought skincare products containing aloe vera at least twice in the previous six months. The factors influencing purchase decisions are assessed using the data analysis technique known as structural equation modeling (SEM). Product, pricing, location, and advertising were the characteristics that were being examined. The survey's results showed that most participants were female, between the ages of 21 and 25, working for a private company, college-educated, and making between Rp1,500,001 and Rp3,000,000. The product variable influenced consumers' buying decisions the most of the four factors analyzed. This is due to the distinctive worth and uniqueness of XYZ items, which are native Pontianak commodities. To improve buying decisions, entrepreneurs must focus more on improving product quality and maintaining the features that are the product's main draws. By enhancing product quality and giving local Pontianak products more prominence, XYZ is expected to be able to compete more successfully in the fiercely competitive skincare market.

Abstract

Kubu Raya Regency, particularly Rasau Jaya District, is a region in West Kalimantan dominated by peatlands. One of the leading agricultural products in this area is cucumber. However, cucumber production in Rasau Jaya District experiences significant annual fluctuations. These fluctuations are caused by various risks, such as vulnerability to climate change, which triggers pest and plant disease outbreaks, and physical and chemical damage to peatlands. This study, conducted in 2023, aims to describe cucumber production outcomes, analyze factors affecting production risks, and measure the magnitude of those risks. Data were collected from 30 respondents who are cucumber farmers in Rasau Jaya District. The research highlights that peatlands, while fertile, are highly sensitive to environmental changes, making risk management crucial for sustainable agriculture. Farmers face challenges such as limited access to agricultural inputs and unpredictable weather conditions, further amplifying the risks in cucumber farming. The socio-economic characteristics of respondents, including education levels and farming experience, also play a role in managing production risks. Data analysis was performed using the coefficient of variation (CV) method and multiple linear regression. The results show that the production risk of cucumber farming in peatlands has a CV value of 0.009, indicating a low risk (CV < 0.5). The analyzed factors include land area, seeds, labor, lime usage, and poles and strings. These factors significantly influence the production risks of cucumbers in the area. This study provides insights into the conditions and risks of cucumber cultivation in the peatlands of Rasau Jaya. The information obtained can serve as a basis for better risk management in peatland agricultural practices.
