Abstract

A 21st-century skill that must be taught from a young age is collaboration. This skill emphasizes social values, empathy, and shared responsibility in the context of early childhood education. It also includes group cooperation. The purpose of this study is to explain how a cultural project based on local knowledge from Riau Malay might encourage cooperation among young children in a kindergarten setting. The research employed a descriptive design and a qualitative methodology. Teachers and students at a kindergarten in Pekanbaru who used the cultural initiative in their lesson plans made up the research subjects. Participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation were used to gather data, which were subsequently subjected to data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing methodologies for analysis. The findings demonstrated that children's empathy, shared responsibility, and positive social connections may be fostered through local culture-based activities like folktale performances, traditional games, and the creation of regional musical instruments. Teachers served as facilitators, directing group dynamics and incorporating cultural values from the area into the educational process. These results attest to the effectiveness of the local wisdom-based cultural initiative in fostering early childhood teamwork and promoting the preservation of Riau Malay culture.

Abstract

Many factors can affect children's school readiness, one of which is the family as their closest environment. This research aimed to analyze the effect of family socioeconomic status, family stress, and parental involvement on children's school readiness. This research involves 113 parents and students of group B Kindergarten in the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in Bantargebang District, Bekasi City, West Java Province. This sample was obtained using the multistage random sampling technique. This study uses path analysis techniques. This study indicates that socioeconomic status, family stress, and parental involvement do not directly affect Children’s school readiness. However, family socioeconomic status has a negative direct effect on family stress, and family stress can also have a negative direct effect on parental involvement in children's education. These findings imply that it is important to create a warm and supportive family environment to optimally carry out their roles and functions in children's education.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation, opportunities, challenges, and influencing factors of numeracy skill development in children aged 5–6 years through abacus activities at the Bali Abacus House tutoring institution. A qualitative case study approach was used, involving 15 children, parents, and teachers over six months. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis. Triangulation techniques ensured accuracy and validity by cross-verifying information from multiple sources. Findings indicate that abacus activities provide a strong foundation for counting and mathematical concept development. Opportunities include improved arithmetic understanding, while challenges involve the need for trained instructors and children's transition from concrete to abstract mathematical thinking. The success of abacus learning is influenced by developmentally appropriate teaching methods, such as Montessori-based individualized learning. However, integrating abacus activities into different educational settings presents challenges, particularly with the increasing emphasis on digital literacy in modern curricula. Balancing hands-on learning with digital tools is crucial to maintaining engagement and effectiveness. Incorporating abacus activities into early childhood education can enhance cognitive processing and numeracy skills. A blended approach that integrates abacus-based learning with digital resources may optimize outcomes. Future research should examine the long-term impact of abacus training on mathematical proficiency and explore strategies for its integration into diverse educational models.

Abstract

Numeracy skills are basic skills that are important to be developed from an early age because they play a role in forming logical thinking skills, problem solving, and children's learning readiness at the next level of education. Numeracy learning in early childhood education needs to be implemented in accordance with the characteristics of child development and learning principles in the PAUD curriculum. This study aims to systematically examine the implementation of numeracy learning in early childhood through a literature review and analyze its suitability with the perspective of the PAUD curriculum and learning principles in the Independent Curriculum. The method used is a literature study by analyzing ten relevant national journal articles, obtained through Google Scholar databases, GARUDA, and university journal portals. The selected articles were analyzed based on the focus of numeracy learning implementation, research subjects, and main findings. The results of the study show that the implementation of numeracy learning in early childhood is generally carried out through a play approach, the use of concrete and game-based media, habituation of daily activities, and child-centered learning strategies. In addition, the role of teachers and a numeracy-rich learning environment are important factors in learning success. The findings of the study also show that the practice of numeracy learning is generally in line with the principles of the PAUD curriculum and the Independent Curriculum, although there are still limitations in planning and consistency of implementation in the field. This research is expected to make a theoretical and practical contribution to the development of early childhood numeracy learning as a foundation for improving the quality of education towards a Golden Indonesia 2045.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a contextual transition learning model to improve the readiness of early childhood schools in Jakarta. The method used is based on Borg & Gall's research and development process, which involves the stages of needs analysis, model design, limited testing, evaluation, and model refinement. A needs analysis of 150 children showed that 43% were ready, 38% were somewhat prepared, and 19% were not ready, with the main weaknesses identified in the social-emotional and independence aspects. The designed model consists of six phases: relaxation, orientation, exploration, collaborative planning, implementation, and expression, based on neuropedagogical principles. Limited testing results showed significant improvement, with the ready category increasing from 43% to 61%, while the not ready category decreased from 19% to 8%. Expert validation resulted in an average score of 3.78 (very good). These results suggest that the contextual transition model is effective in enhancing children's readiness and have implications for teacher practice, parental involvement, and systematic educational policy.

Abstract

Marine environmental awareness in early childhood is essential to fostering lifelong environmental responsibility. This study evaluates the comparative effectiveness of STEAM and scientific approaches on children’s marine awareness, specifically examining the moderating role of critical thinking among second-grade students in West Java, Indonesia. Using a quasi-experimental design with a 2×2 factorial structure, the study involved 51 children aged 7–8 years. Data were collected using the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) Scale adapted for children and a critical thinking assessment rubric, then analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA. Results confirmed that the STEAM approach significantly outperformed the scientific approach in enhancing marine awareness (F(1, 45)=111.65, p<.001). Crucially, a significant interaction effect (F(2, 45)=3.49, p=.039) revealed that the efficacy of STEAM was amplified in students with higher critical thinking skills (M=136.27) compared to the scientific group (M=112.75). Practically, these findings advocate for shifting early environmental pedagogy from linear scientific inquiry to transdisciplinary STEAM models. Educators are recommended to integrate critical thinking scaffolding within STEAM activities to maximize marine literacy and environmental responsibility in young learners.
