Abstract

Development of soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr.) in tidal land are faced with problems physical, chemical and biological soil properties, such as high organic matter, high soil acidity, toxicity of Fe and Al, and deficiency of nutrients N, P , K, Ca and Mg. N content is high (> 0.51%) but with low availability.  The research objective is to determine the dose and timing of N, P and K application in accordance with the needs of soybean plants to have optimally growth and production in mineral and peaty mineral soil in tidal land. The research was conducted in mineral and peaty mineral soil of tidal land type C and B, District of Tanjung Lago, Banyuasin Regency, Province of South Sumatra from April to August 2014. The model is linear using split plots in a randomized block design. Varieties of Willis and Tanggamus were used for nitrogen application experiment.  The time of fertilizer application is at 2, 3 and 4 weeks after planting (WAP), 2, 3, 4 and 5 WAP, and 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 WAP. The concentration of nitrogen is 7,5; 10; 12,5 and 15 g/l water with spraying volume of 400 l/ha.  In the mineral soil, dry weight of nodules and Willis biomass increased with increasing frequency time of fertilization, otherwise Tanggamus more fluctuating and declined at higher frequency of fertilization. Wilis variety generating the highest production of 3,5 ton/ha.  In the peaty mineral soil, dry weight of nodules and biomass were not significant.  Willis productivity tends to decrease with increasing nitrogen concentrations.  Tanggamus productivity tends to increase with increasing nitrogen concentration at all level of time fertilization.  Tanggamus tend to generate higher productivity of 3,2 ton/ha.

Abstract

Weed is a problem on the soybean saturated culture in tidal swamp land. The objective of this study was to obtain the most effective herbicide for weed control on soybean planted under saturated culture in the tidal swamp land. Research was conducted in tidal swamp land at Banyu Urip village, Tanjung Lago districs, Banyuasin, South Sumatra Province, from July to December 2013, using a randomized block design consisted, of the eight treatments, with three replications. The treatments were: control (P0), manual weeding 4 weeks after planting (P1), paraquat 2 l/ha 4 weeks after planting (P2), glyphosate 3 l/ha 4 after planting (P3), oxyfluorfen 2 l/ha 3 days before planting (P4), oxyfluorfen 3 days before planting 2 l/ha followed application of paraquat 4 weeks after planting 2 l/ha (P5), oxyfluorfen 3 days before planting 2 l/ha followed application of glyphosate 4 weeks after planting 3 l/ha (P6), penoxulam 1 l/ha 2 weeks after planting (P7). Results showed that herbicide paraquat effectively suppressed total dry weight of weeds at 4, 6, and 8 weeks after planting. Cyperus iria was the most dominant weed in the field, with Sum Dominance Ratio 37.7%. The highest soybean productivity was 3.7 t/ha obtained from glyphosate treatment. Pre-emergence herbicide applications should be done prior to soybean planting and the post-emergence herbicide application must be done carefully by using nozzle lid to prevent toxicity to the crop plants.

Abstract

Harvesting process is a critical time to identify the quality of raw material for traditional medicine. The time and harvesting techniques, drying process after harvesting, and processing to make the simplicia, are the crucial role to make the good quality of the natural product. On the other hand, there is a lack of general understanding and appreciation about the processes involved in governing shoot and tree growth and development, i.e. red guava.  The research objective was to evaluate the influence of leaf harvesting and growth phases on red guava for flavonoid production as antioxidant. Randomized factorial block design in time were laid out with two factors and followed by Duncan’s multiple range test. The treatments were the amount of leaf  harvested on tertiary branches (0, 25, 50, and 100%) and growth phases of the plant (vegetative and generative). Leaf harvesting 25% on tertiary branches significantly increased the leaf number (766.3 tree-1) and the number of new quarternary branches, decreasing leaf area index (LAI) and leaf dry weight at the end of the experiment (22 weeks of observation/WO).  The highest leaf dry weight (156.94 g tree-1) and LAI (0.47) was found in harvesting 25% tertiary branches.  Harvesting 100% leaf on tertiary branches in vegetative phase significantly produced the lowest flavonoid production (7.82 g tree-1). The result suggested that flavonoid production from red guava leaves should be done by harvesting 50% leaf on tertiary branches in generative phase can be used to produce the highest flavonoid (89.90 g tree-1).

Abstract

Virus infection is an important production constraint for soybean. Research was conducted to detect virus infection from soybean samples collected from several locations in Java. Leave samples from 50 plants was taken randomly from each location in Bogor, Cirebon, Bantul, and Ponorogo. Field symptoms was observed and disease incidence was determined based on serological assay using specific antibodies to Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Soybean mosaic virus (SMV), Cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV), and Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV). Incidence of CMV, SMV, and CPMMV was 72–84%, 14–24%, and 6–8%, respectively; whereas infection of BPMV was not found. Specific viral DNA of CMV, Potyvirus, and Geminivirus was successfully amplified using specific primer for CMV coat protein, universal primer for Potyvirus and Geminivirus, respectively. Nucleotide sequence analysis showed that isolate CMV from soybean has the highest homology (99%) to CMV strain S, Potyvirus isolates has the highest homology (90%) to BCMV isolate Mungbean from China and BCMV strain Blackeye from Vietnam, and Geminivirus isolates has the highest homology (96%) to Pepper yellow leaf curl virus (PYLCV) from Bogor and Java. Phyllogenetic analysis showed that CMV strain S formed

Abstract

The objective of this expaiment was to study the effect of phosphorus fertilization on the growth and production of Americana and Lokon under saturated soil culture. The experiment was conducted at the Cikarawang Experimental Station, IPB, on a Latosol, from November 1988 until April 1989. Soybean yield did not respond to the phosphorus application, and maybe due to improved soil P availability under saturated condition. Leaf P concentrations at 9 weeks were sufficient (0.303 to 0.357%) for all levels of treatment. Active nodule growth was longer under saturated soil culture than conventional irrigation. Maximum active nodule growth under conventional culture was reached at 6 weeks, but under saturated soil culture was still increasing between 6 to 9 weeks from 0.175 to 0.342 g/plant for Americana and from 0.162 to 0.260 g/plant for Lokon. Increase of active nodule dry weight was followed by increase of leaf N concentration between 6 to 9 weeks from 3.366 to 3.674% for Americana, and from 3.382 to 3.695% for Lokon. Americana was more tolerant than Lokon to saturated soil culture. Number of Tied pods, 100- sads weight, and seed dry weight/plot of Americana were bigger than Lokon.
