Abstract

Abstract

Kata Kunci— Energy harvester, kantilever unimorph, pengaruh ketebalan piezoelektrikAbstract— Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) typically are placed in remote places where there is no electric utility. In consequence, it requires an independent power supply. The power supply used in WSNs is a conventional battery, which still has several shortcomings, such as limited lifespan, environmental pollution, and relatively high-cost maintenance. To overcome the current issues, applying an energy harvesting method has become an alternative solution. The energy harvester configuration discussed in this thesis is a unimorph piezoelectric cantilever. To optimize the performance of the cantilevered energy harvester, the thickness effect analysis is needed. There are two different cantilevers discussed in this paper, namely cantilever with PZT-5H and PZT-5A piezoelectric material. Based on the analysis of theoretical and simulation calculations, the two cantilevers have the same optimal piezoelectric layer thickness value for each voltage and power output. However, compared with cantilever PZT-5H, cantilever PZT-5A generates greater output voltage value, yet smaller output power. The comparison of the output voltage between the theoretical calculation results and the simulation results on cantilever PZT-5H shows the largest percentage of 3.32%, while the comparison of the output voltage on cantilever PZT-5A shows the largest percentage difference of 3.1%. Index Terms— Energy harvester, piezoelectric thickness effect, unimorph cantilever.

Abstract

Abstract

The increase of power system demand leads to the change in voltage profile, reliability requirement and system robustness against disturbance. The voltage profile can be improved by providing a source of reactive power through the addition of new power plants, capacitor banks, or implementation of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices such as Static VAR Compensator (SVC), Unified Power Flow Control (UPFC), Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC), Thyristor Controlled Phase Shifting Transformer (TCPST), and many others. Determination of optimal location and sizing of device injection is paramount to produce the best improvement of voltage profile and power losses reduction. In this paper, optimization of the combined advantages of TCPST and TCSC has been investigated using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, being applied to the 30-bus system IEEE standard. The effectiveness of the placement and sizing of TCPST-TCSC combination has been compared to the implementation of capacitor banks. The result showed that the combination of TCPST-TCSC resulted in more effective improvement of system power losses condition than the implementation of capacitor banks.  The power losses reduction of 46.47% and 42.03% have been obtained using of TCPST-TCSC combination and capacitor banks respectively. The TCPST-TCSC and Capacitor Bank implementations by using PSO algorithm have also been compared with the implementation of Static VAR Compensator (SVC) using Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) Algorithm. The implementation of the TCSC-TCPST compensation with PSO algorithm have gave a better result than using the capacitor bank with PSO algorithm and SVC with the ABC algorithm.

Abstract

This paper describes the design of an LED lamp to be used in a DC house being supplied using a renewable energy source or in a DC Smart Grid. LED lamps are widely known for its low-electricity consumption. The DC house application is becoming more and more popular due to its advantage of using DC generated electricity, for example from a solar photovoltaic system, directly without having to invert it into AC voltage. However, LED needs a driver to activate and control it. Its mounting also needs certain precaution to anticipate the high heat from the LED. An appropriate heatsink is required before activating the LED. The laboratory results indicate that a 3-watt LED bulb lamp can produce an efficiency up to 93.16% with luminous efficacy 82.29 lm/W. These results prove that an LED bulb consumes less energy and can give an optimal brightness.

Abstract

Electric energy is the main driver of various daily activities, both to increase productivity as well as to improve life quality. Energy demand is continuously increasing in parallel to the progress in technology and population growth. Depletion of fossil energy sources and awareness of environmental protection make people resort to renewable energy sources like solar energy. Low efficiency and intermittent characteristic of solar energy may originate from the sun movement along the day as well as the year. Efforts have always been tried to deal with the drawbacks. This paper proposes a computer-based tracking system to fully monitor and control a solar panel movement. The designed system has proven a good performance of working at certain time intervals, either hourly, or even continuously, as desired. Energy yield improvement has been achieved by processing the tracking results with the help of a microcontroller to optimize the power generation of the solar panel.

Abstract

This paper describes the method to control a hybrid robot whose main task is to climb a pole to place an object on the top of the pole. The hybrid pole-climbing robot considered in this paper uses 2 Planetary PG36 DC-motors as actuators and an external rotary encoder sensor to provide a feedback on the change in robot orientation during the climbing movement. The orientation control of the pole-climbing robot using self-tuning method has been realized by identifying the transfer function of the actuator system under consideration, being followed with the calculation of control parameters using the self-tuning pole-placement method, and furthermore being implemented on the external rotary encoder sensor. Self-tuning pole-placement method has been explored to control the parameters q0, q1, q2, and p1 of the controller. The experiments were done on a movement path in a form of a cylindrical pole. The first experiment was done based one the change in rotation angle of the rotary sensor with the angle values greater than 50˚ in the positive direction, whereas the second experiment was done with the angle values greater than -50˚ in the negative direction. The experiment results show that the control of the robot under consideration could maintain its original position at the time of angle change disturbance and that the robot could climb in a straight direction within the specified tolerance of orientation angle change.

Abstract

Electric bike (E-Bike) is a bicycle driven using an electric motor and uses batteries as the energy source. It is environmentally friendly as no exhaust gas is resulted during its operation. More than one battery is normally required, being arranged in series or in parallel connection. Over limit or overloaded conditions of battery usage will reduce the lifecycle of battery, speed up its replacement and add to the maintenance cost of electric bike. This paper proposes the prevention of such degrading condition using a tool to manage the battery usage both during the charging and discharging process. The proposed electronic Battery Management System (BMS) serves to regulate, monitor, and maintain the condition of batteries to prevent any possible damage. The resulted BMS design could provide a well balancing action in a battery system consisting of 13 cells utilizing the cell-to-cell active balancing method. The test results showed that the proposed BMS could monitor the individual cell voltage with an average error of 0.032 V (0.824%), while reading the charge and discharge current with an average error of 0.04 A (6.25%), and the battery pack temperature with an average error of 1.21oC (2.9%). Additionally, the BMS could offer a functional battery pack protection system from conditions such as undervoltage, overvoltage, overheat, and overcurrent.
