Abstract

The growth and development of children disturbance is a health problem that often is found in the community. Anemia and colour blindness are also health conditions that can affect the quality of growth and development of children, which parents rarely realize. The blood type of children is seldom defined in early ages by the parents. This activity aims to conduct health counselling, the examination of colour blindness, blood type, and hemoglobin levels in school-age children in Sumanik village. Methods: Activities were health education on how to wash hands properly and be aware of internet content. The activities were continued by a health examination, such as examining colour blindness, hemoglobin levels, and blood type. Testing of blood type on 76 children, two of 79 children has partial colour blindness. We found From 28 children (36.4%) having anemia, with hemoglobin levels 9.2-11.9 gr / dL, and one child has a blood type B rhesus (-). From this activity, it can be concluded that the low level of knowledge of school-age children in Kenagarian Sumaniak about how to wash hands properly and correctly, even children do not know the adverse effects associated with adult content on the internet. In addition, it appears that children with anemia are still relatively high. For this reason, continuous health promotion is needed. For disorders that can not be overcome at the time of activity, it is recommended to get treatment to the nearest health care centre.

Abstract

Leprosy is still a health problem in several countries, including Indonesia. Disability due to leprosy is a health threat for sufferers and causes quality-of-life problems that can disrupt the productivity of leprosy patients. Ocular involvement in leprosy is joint, but little data has been reported. Apart from multi-drug treatment (MDT), leprosy sufferers must also be able to carry out continuous self-care to prevent further disability. This is a collaborative activity between the Department of Ophthalmology and Dermatology Venereology of the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Andalas in Puskesmas Pauh Kamba district of Padang Pariaman. This is an advocacy activity on self-care (3M: Seeing, Examining, and Protecting) and eye examination. The activity was followed by interactive discussions and continued with a direct examination for skin abnormalities and disabilities, eye examination, and fundoscope. The activity results were obtained from 24 respondents, 11 men and 13 women. The age range is 16-59 years (67%), with the highest level of education being Elementry School graduates, which is 11 people (46%). In the self-care questionnaire of patients, 40% behaved well, and the results of eye examinations almost suffered from dry eye complaints without disabilities.

Abstract

Background: Radiotherapy is one of the most commonly used treatments for cancer. Radiotherapy works by using high-energy particles or waves, such as X-rays, gamma rays, electron beams, or protons, to destroy or damage cancer cells. Anxiety is an emotional response that arises when a person experiences stress. Patients diagnosed with cancer will experience anxiety, and the anxiety increases in patients undergoing radiotherapy. Anxiety in radiotherapy generally occurs due to a lack of information, side effects of treatment, and radiation procedures. This study aims to determine the description of the anxiety level of cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at Universitas Andalas Hospital.Method: This study is a quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach that examines the description of the anxiety level of cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at Universitas Andalas Hospital. Anxiety levels were measured using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaire. Results: The sample in this study was 62 cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. The results of the study were obtained in the A-State section, 64.5% experienced mild anxiety, 27.4% experienced moderate anxiety, and 8.1% experienced severe anxiety. The results of the A-Trait section 53.2% experienced mild anxiety, 43.6% experienced moderate anxiety, and 3.2% experienced severe anxiety. The trait section of anxiety tends to be more severe than the state section. Conclusion: The anxiety level of cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at Andalas University Hospital, A-State, and A-Trait is mostly at a mild level. The results of the study can be used as a source of information to consider a psychological approach to patient treatment. However, further researchers can analyze the relationship between variables that influence the level of anxiety

Abstract

Grave's Ophthalmopathy can occur in three phases depending on the inflammatory process.  Immunosuppressant therapy is an anti-inflammatory option for managing the active phase of GO.  A study showed a significant improvement in GO proptosis in patients treated with methylprednisolone.  Objective: To determined the frequency of proptosis in Thyroid Eye Disease  (TED) patients and the differential effect of oral or intravenous steroid administration.  Methods: This study was a prospective cohort study through medical record data from March 2023 to March 2024.  The subjects are all inpatients with thyroid eye disease in Dr M Djamil General Hospital, Padang.  T-tests were performed to determine each group's different perceptions.  Results: Thirty-six subjects with Grave’s ophthalmopathy.  The effect size of the changes in Hertel values in patients given both oral and intravenous corticosteroid therapy is significant in both eyes.  The effect size of the oral therapy is significant, with 0.341 in the right eyes and 0.303 in the left eyes.  The intravenous therapy is also significant, with the effect size 0.347 in the right and 0.271 in the left.  The change of Hertel value in patients given both oral and intravenous corticosteroid therapy is significant in the right eyes (p = 0.009 and p = 0.008).  Conclusion: Oral and injectable corticosteroids have similar effectiveness, thus providing flexibility in therapy selection for patients with thyroid eye disease. Keywords:  Grave ophthalmopathy, intravenous methylprednisolone, oral methylprednisolone

Abstract

Eye diseases, particularly cataracts, are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. This community service program by the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University, was conducted at the Pangkalan Public Health Center, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, by empowering PELITA (Posyandu) cadres in early detection of cataracts. Methods included counseling, training, and eye examination simulations for 40 cadres, followed by community screening using visual acuity and anterior segment examinations. Evaluation was carried out with pre- and post-tests, satisfaction surveys, and follow-up on patients referred for surgery. The average cadre score improved from 68 (pre-test) to 74.5 (post-test), indicating increased knowledge. A total of 71 patients were screened, including 40 cataract and 8 pterygium cases; 26 cataract and 4 pterygium patients subsequently underwent surgery. Cadres reported high satisfaction with the training and expressed readiness to continue participation. This program demonstrates that cadre training is effective in improving early detection of cataracts and other visual impairments, and provides a foundation for establishing a Vision Center in Lima Puluh Kota.

Abstract

Background : Tear film is a fluid-filled layer that protects the eyes from the external environment. This layer consists of three layers, namely lipid, aqueous and mucin. Tear film stability is seen as one of the main characteristics of eye health. failure to maintain balance Tear film can cause dry eyes. One of the causes of dry eyes is an imbalance of steroid sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and androgens. These hormones have mRNA receptors on the surface tissues of the eye that are susceptible to hormonal contraceptives. Objective : This literature study aims to explore various original research literature on the relationship between the use of hormonal contraceptives and the stability of Tear film.  Methods : Narrative reviews of literature searched through the Pubmed and Google Scholar databases, then selected based on established inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results : There are 6 literatures with 444 women of childbearing age with an age range of 20-45 years who use the TBUT and Schirmer examinations. Conclusion : There is no relationship between the use of hormonal contraceptives and the stability of tear film
