Abstract

Student learning achievement is one of the most crucial aspects of mathematicseducation. Various factors have been found to influence this achievement, suchas metacognitive awareness, mathematical disposition, self-efficacy, andreflective thinking. However, previous studies have rarely investigated thesimultaneous effect of these four factors, especially through the mediating roleof reflective thinking. This study aims to: (1) examine the direct effects ofmetacognitive awareness, mathematical disposition, and self-efficacy onreflective thinking; (2) test the direct effects of these variables on mathematicsachievement; and (3) analyze indirect effects on achievement throughreflective thinking. This study uses quantitative-correlational. The studyinvolved 200 students from grades X and XI at SMA 1 Boyolali. Data werecollected using validated questionnaires and mathematics tests, then analyzedusing path analysis. The results showed that metacognitive awareness, disposition, and self-efficacy significantly affected reflective thinking, with acontribution of 66.1%. Additionally, those three factors also had significantdirect effects on mathematics achievement, contributing 67.4%. Furthermore, reflective thinking was found to mediate the indirect effect of metacognitiveawareness, disposition, and self-efficacy on mathematics achievement. Thesefindings contribute to the development of more comprehensive models ofmathematics learning by highlighting the central role of reflective thinking asa mediator.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the forms of students’ learning difficulties and the factors underlying them. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method involving seven sixth-grade students at SDN Tegalharjo, Surakarta. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, and then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that most students have a good understanding of basic statistical concepts due to the contextual learning approach applied by the teacher; however, the main difficulties arise at the calculation stage, particularly in calculating the mean with decimal results and determining the median due to a lack of accuracy in ordering data. The factors contributing to these difficulties include limited arithmetic skills, low accuracy, and varying levels of learning support from families. Students’ learning motivation is relatively high, especially when the material is linked to real-life experiences and practical activities. These findings emphasize the need to strengthen basic numeracy skills, improve accuracy, and involve the learning environment to enhance elementary school students’ understanding of Statistics. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that improving elementary students’ understanding of Statistics should focus on reinforcing basic numeracy skills, accuracy in calculation processes, and synergy between contextual learning strategies and learning environment support.   Keyword: Mathematics, Elementary School, Statistics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in developing elementary school students' statistical literacy skills. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach involving 16 sixth-grade students from Sanggrahan Public Elementary School in Surakarta City. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and document analysis, then analyzed using the Miles & Huberman model. The results showed that the application of PBL was able to improve students' data interpretation skills, critical thinking, and active involvement in statistics learning. Students admitted that it was easier to understand the material because the learning activities involved real experiences and group discussions, while teachers and the principal stated that PBL had a positive impact on the quality of learning even though it required more preparation and time. Factors supporting success included teachers' mastery of PBL, adequate facilities and infrastructure, and school support; while obstacles included time constraints and the need for intensive preparation. This study confirms that PBL is an effective approach to improve elementary school students' statistical literacy and is relevant for application in contextual mathematics learning.   Keyword: Problem-Based Learning, Statistical Literacy, Elementary School.

Abstract

The fragmentation of creative thinking structures is a phenomenon requiring serious attention in Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). However, studies that systematically explore how students’ creative thinking fragmentation manifests across RME learning stages remain limited. This study aims to examine the types and forms of students' creative thinking fragmentation across four RME activities: situation, model of situation, model for knowledge, and formal mathematics. This research employs a qualitative case study design. Participants consisted of 18 seventh-grade students from an Integrated Islamic Junior High School in Sukoharjo Regency. Data were collected through non-routine mathematical problem tests and in-depth interviews, with validity ensured through source triangulation. Data analysis involved thematic coding based on a fragmentation typology aligned with RME stages, followed by data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The results identified five types of fragmentation: (1) less-strict fragmentation at the situation stage, (2) translational fragmentation (text to symbol) at the situation stage, (3) pseudo-false fragmentation at the model of situation stage, (4) translational fragmentation (text to image) at the model for knowledge stage, and (5) pseudo-true fragmentation at the formal mathematics stage. These findings extend theoretical perspectives and inform instructional design and scaffolding strategies in RME classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the role of Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) as a bridge in facilitating students' mathematicization process on proportional relationships through the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. This study uses the Design Research methodology which consists of three phases, namely preparing and designing, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The subjects of the study were 32 students of grade VII.C at one of the public junior high schools in Karanganyar Regency. The research data was collected through written tests in the form of non-routine story questions, semi-structured interviews, learning observations, and documentation. The data were analyzed qualitatively by comparing the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) with the actual learning trajectory of students during the learning process. The results of the study show that the design of RME-based HLT is able to facilitate the gradual development of students' thinking from informal strategies to formal representations. This is shown through: (1) the shift of students' strategies from repeated addition to multiplicative reasoning, (2) students' ability to identify comparative constants through the use of tables as intermediate models, and (3) students' ability to generalize comparative relationships into algebraic representations. These findings show that RME-based HLT can be an effective learning framework in supporting students' mathematicization process on equivalent comparison materials and provide a reference for teachers in designing learning that is oriented towards developing concept understanding.

Abstract

Students’ mathematics learning outcomes are influenced not only by academic ability but also by other factors such as emotional intelligence and learning motivation. However, these two factors are often overlooked in the mathematics learning process in schools. This study aims to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and learning motivation, examining both partial and simultaneous effects on students’ mathematics learning outcomes. A correlational method was used in this study, employing a quantitative approach. Data collection techniques included a questionnaire to measure emotional intelligence and learning motivation, as well as documentation to obtain data on students’ mathematics learning outcomes. The instrument consisted of a questionnaire using a 1–4 Likert scale. The results indicate that there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and mathematics learning outcomes, a relationship between learning motivation and mathematics learning outcomes, and a simultaneous relationship between both factors and students’ mathematics learning outcomes. This study implies that teachers and schools are expected to pay closer attention to students’ emotional and motivational aspects in mathematics learning to improve learning outcomes.
