Abstract

This research examines what ideologies Film Television (FTv) offered during the COVID-19 pandemic and how these ideologies developed in the FTv using framing analysis and a gender perspective approach. Results indicate that there are two hidden ideologies as follows. First, the FTv production house carries a patriarchal ideology by raising themes that discriminate against women through stereotypes against women that appear in the story. Second, the FTv production house carries the ideology of feminism, with themes that position women as superordinate. Women occupy a higher social class than men. Women determine their own lives; even women have power over men. Academically, these findings are expected to add to the theoretical study in the sociology of communication and media research on how the power of knowledge in FTv affects the audience and contributes information, and enriches the development of research on gender relations and violence.

Abstract

This study investigates the socio-psychological reactions and coping strategies of urban outskirts residents in Surabaya, Indonesia, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a combination of quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with 100 respondents, the research explores how individuals perceive and respond to the abundance of information about COVID-19, including its origins, death tolls, and misinformation on mainstream and social media platforms. While some respondents feel devastated by the information overload, others surrender to the belief that the pandemic is destined by a higher power. Coping mechanisms vary, with some focusing on boosting immunity through vitamins and herbal drinks, engaging in cultural rituals, or turning to religious spirituality. The study draws on perspectives from Communication and Health Anthropology to offer a comprehensive understanding of local practices in response to the pandemic, contributing to broader global Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract

Abstract

Since the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York in 2001, terrorism in the name of Islam has become a common occurrence in Indonesia. As a result, violent images of Islam widely circulated in the media. Islam and its minor images have permeated the Indonesian entertainment media landscape, including independent cinema. This study addresses the lack of research on Indonesian independent films with Islamic themes. In its earliest stage, this study studied how an independent movie, Train To Heaven (TTH), examined the language surrounding terrorism in the name of Islam. The analysis in this paper, which was conducted within the context of social semiotics, indicated that the sarcastic tones used in the text were consistent with the film's principal focus, which was rejecting violent acts in the name of Islam. TTH, an independent film that tackles the issue of terrorism committed in the name of Islam, frequently expresses resistance to the act at the outset of its cinematic portrayal. As the scenes develop, the story becomes increasingly ambiguous. TTH's antagonistic stance on alleged Islamic terrorism has not been maintained. The emergence of contradictions after the story, the TTH indie film's position, which has not been fully designed to address a specific alternative "voice," and the Islamic dynamics in Indonesia, which are not well mapped in discourse formation, are some of the particular factors that contributed to the ideological ambiguity of TTH's existence. Lastly, TTH's oppositional positioning or subtleties of resistance are questionable. The linguistic creation appears to be overtaken by ideological ambiguities. There is no doubt that Islamic doctrinal viewpoints will never include the death of God. The ending of the film was incongruous with the subject of criticism from the start, resulting in a confusing discourse about Islam and terrorism. Finally, this study reveals that TTH is ambiguous in defining the extent of its critique, whether it is directed at acts of terrorism in the name of Islam or Islamic beliefs. This study is limited by its focus on a single independent film, TTH, and is constrained by the evolving nature of Indonesian cinema and global perceptions of Islam and terrorism. Future research should examine a broader range of Indonesian indie films, explore the relationship between media representation, religion, and societal values, and consider audience reception studies to deepen the understanding of how such films are interpreted across different cultural and demographic contexts.

This research aims to know the roles of the elders as authority holders in the means of health communication for stunting prevention implemented in Trenggalek Regency, East Java. Stunting is the failure of growth and development caused by malnutrition at the first 1000 days of a child’s life. This problem can be prevented by providing nutrition needed by pregnant women and toddlers, but for preventing this the efforts of health communication are needed so that the mindset and behaviors of the society can change according to the health standards. Therefore, at Trenggalek Regency Kenek Beraksi program was implemented involving elders who may have authority to distribute knowledge and intervene behaviors which cause stunting to children. This research is qualitative research using case study method, by data gathering using in depth interview and document study. The result of this research shows that elders have significant roles in health communication for stunting prevention at Trenggalek Regency. Elders hold authorities because of the culture in society giving them privilege as respected and trusted figures. Furthermore, their knowledge and experience give them expert power and referent power making their family follow their guidance. In health communication, their health acts as a communicator delivering health messages. The effects felt from the elders’ involvement in this health communication program include the decrease of pregnant women having anemia, the increase of the toddlers’ nutritional adequacy achievement, and the increasing weights of toddlers, which altogether reduce the number of stunting at Trenggalek Regency

Abstract

Through its phenomenal jargon "Broadcast Yourself", YouTube seems to be an important instrument for social life because this platform is designed for amateurs who want to publish their content so that it can be recognized by the whole world. But is it true that this jargon has changed the position of the audience from being just consumers on conventional media to becoming prosumers on the YouTube platform? This research attempts to examine popular content on YouTube in 2018-2020 to obtain an overview of the growing YouTube content industry in Indonesia as well as competition between user-generated content and professional-generated content. ). Digital labor theory from Christian Fuchs is used to read digital capitalism practices that occur on the YouTube platform, while the research methodology used is digital discourse by looking at four dimensions including text, context, action and interaction as well as ideology and power. This research concludes that there has been a practice of digital capitalism on the YouTube platform which can be seen from how the audience has experienced multiple layers of exploitation as free labor on the YouTube platform. Audiences do not only work for capitalist corporations that sell personal data to advertisers, they also become the backbone of capital corporations through the video content they produce. Apart from that, the audience also works for other audiences who are content creators.

Abstract

This study explores the utilization of Facebook as a medium for Islamic da'wah in the contemporary era, highlighting its potential, advantages, and accompanying challenges. The method employed is a literature review with a narrative-descriptive approach. Data were collected from indexed and relevant scholarly articles and analyzed thematically to portray the dynamics of digital da'wah. The findings indicate that Facebook offers a broad, fast, and interactive space for da'wah through features such as live streaming, da'wah groups, and visual content. The platform’s strengths lie in its ability to reach younger generations, foster digital spiritual communities, and support contextual two-way communication. However, challenges also arise, such as the proliferation of hate speech, the spread of hoaxes, negative comments, and the emergence of unqualified preachers lacking sufficient knowledge and digital ethics. Additionally, the pressure to gain popularity often obscures the substance of da'wah. Therefore, effective da'wah on Facebook requires an integration of digital competence, deep religious knowledge, and commitment to Islamic ethical values. This study is expected to contribute theoretically to the development of Islamic communication studies and serve as a practical guide for preachers and Islamic institutions in designing ethical and effective digital da'wah strategies.
