Abstract

Local wisdom has worked as an illustration for teaching values. Little is known, nonetheless, regarding the value of the Binjai tree as a place term when teachers teach value education outside of the learner's local setting, causing them to lose awareness of it. This study aims to identify the value contained in the Binjai tree as the name of Binjai City. The research uses a literature study, sourcing data from articles searched in the Google Scholar database. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification. The study uses NVIVO 12 Plus to code nodes and cases. Results show historical value, which is the nomenclature of the city. In addition, there is also socio-cultural value in Binjai trees, which are used as consumption and health materials. Binjai trees also have economic value, as tree trunks are used as building materials, and Binjai fruit is processed as a product. The study emphasizes the importance of value education through the Binjai tree in cultivating democratic, nationalist, and self-identity citizens. The implications of this study extend to learning planning, encouraging teachers to use culturally relevant local educational resources, and building a foundation for extracurricular activities that promote local wisdom heritage.

Abstract

Career decision-making is influenced by cultural context, impacting students’ choices and the challenges they face. This study investigates factors contributing to career decision-making difficulties among students from different ethnic backgrounds in Indonesia. A survey was conducted among 601 students from three Indonesian universities, spanning cohorts from 2020 to 2023. Data was collected using a validated career decision-making scale based on the taxonomy of career decision-making difficulties. Analysis was primarily descriptive, focusing on factors that hinder effective career choices. The findings indicate that indecisiveness and dysfunctional beliefs are key factors affecting career decision-making difficulties across ethnic groups. Indecisiveness, characterized by delaying decisions due to anxiety and uncertainty, and dysfunctional beliefs, encompassing unrealistic assumptions about career paths, emerged as significant barriers. While differences in ethnic backgrounds contributed to varying levels of difficulty, high motivation was consistently observed across all groups, indicating an absence of motivational issues. The results underscore the need for culturally responsive counseling in universities. Understanding that ethnic background influences career decision-making challenges can guide counselors in providing tailored support. Ethnically sensitive approaches may address the specific difficulties faced by diverse groups, improving career counseling outcomes. This study highlights the role of cultural factors, particularly ethnic differences, in shaping career decision-making difficulties among Indonesian students. Future research should expand to include a broader range of ethnic groups to deepen understanding of Indonesia’s cultural diversity in career decision contexts.

Abstract

The Sundanese proverb "Ngindung ka waktu, mibapa ka jaman" embodies educational values balancing tradition preservation with contemporary adaptation, yet remains underexplored as a pedagogical framework for nationalism-based character education in elementary schools. This study examined how educational values embedded in this proverb manifest in Kampung Adat Cireundeu community practices and their implications for elementary education. Employing ethnographic case study design, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with traditional leaders (n=2), elementary teachers (n=3), and community members (n=5), and document analysis. Data were analyzed using Miles et al.'s (2014) descriptive analysis framework with methodological triangulation ensuring validity. Five core educational values emerged: love for cultural heritage, social responsibility, unity, adaptive capacity, and independence. These values manifested through concrete practices including cassava-based food self-sufficiency, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), selective technology adoption, and intergenerational knowledge transmission. Comparative analysis revealed philosophical consistency across Indonesian ethnic proverbs. Successful curriculum integration required teacher ethnopedagogical training, curriculum flexibility, and community-school partnerships. The proverb functions as a living pedagogical framework demonstrating that indigenous communities can simultaneously preserve cultural identity while engaging modernity. Findings provide evidence-based guidance for integrating local wisdom into character education curricula, positioning traditional knowledge systems as vital resources for developing culturally grounded, nationally coherent educational frameworks applicable beyond Indonesian contexts.
