Abstract

The current study was conducted to assess to assess the productivity of oil palm plantations in North Konawe, Indonesia, that are run through partnership with oil palm smallholders. Data were gathered through surveys and interviews. The study found that the productivity of the plantations was still low, ranging from 4 to 8 metric tons of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) ha–1 year–1, while the yield potential for the grown cultivars could reach 15 metric tons ha–1 year–1. Increasing the oil palm productivity could be done through improved soil capacity to provide nutrients for oil palm plants, for instance, through fertilization and/or the use of organic matter. Since the oil palm plantations were mostly developed on lands with slopes of 15-25%, activities during land preparation, cultivation, and FBBs harvest and transportation should be done properly to reduce land degradation due to erosion. Practices to minimize the sloppy land degradation include terracing and growing cover crops, multiple cropping or intercropping the main crop (oil palm) with either annual crops or perennial crops. Another strategy is through the integration of livestock farming into the oil palm plantations. Keywords: agroecology, productivity, strategy, management

Abstract

Tourism plays a significant role in the economic development of Indonesia, particularly in areas like Meleura Beach, Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, which offers unique natural landscapes and cultural heritage. However, local MSMEs in the region face challenges in promoting their products and services due to limited digital marketing skills and technological adaptation. This study aims to explore the role of strategic marketing, especially digital marketing, in enhancing the attractiveness of the Meleura Beach tourism destination. A qualitative research approach, combining SWOT analysis and FGDs, was employed to assess the current marketing strategies of MSMEs and their potential for growth. The findings revealed that while businesses possess strengths in their unique products and local resources, many face weaknesses such as insufficient digital marketing capabilities and infrastructure. Opportunities for growth lie in leveraging digital marketing tools and community-based tourism, but threats from competition and regulatory changes remain significant. The study concludes that enhancing digital literacy among MSMEs, supported by government and private sector collaboration, is essential for increasing market reach and competitiveness. It is recommended that MSMEs focus on digital marketing, community involvement, and partnerships with international agencies to ensure long-term growth and sustainability in the global tourism market.

Abstract

Traditional institutions function to regulate the order of community lives in the political, economic, socio-cultural, and security fields. This study aims to describe the structure of traditional institutions and explain the role of these institutions in supporting food security for small island communities. The research was carried out in April-December 2021 in the Islands of Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and literature study with the data triangulation method and analyzed qualitatively. The results show that traditional institutions such as Sara Liya on Wangi-Wangi Island and Sarano Wali on Binongko Island have a management structure that is directly responsible for the community's food security system. Sara plays a role as the person in charge of community welfare, regulates the control and management of agricultural/fishery land, organizes rituals to maintain the stability of food production, and regulates the distribution system and food consumption. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the community continue to trust Sara as a traditional institution that can partner with the government. Sara's management is expected to have high adaptability to changing community conditions while still maintaining the values of local wisdom. In addition, the government is expected to provide support for strengthening customary institutions

Abstract

The considerable potential inherent in Indonesia's fisheries sector, bolstered by its abundant marine resources, has not been met by a commensurate enhancement in the productivity of fishermen. This underperformance can be primarily attributed to the limited competencies exhibited by fishermen, characterized by a paucity of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. A case in point is the traditional fishermen in Lakologou Village, Baubau City, who continue to grapple with challenges related to nature, technology, and catch management. The objective of this study is to ascertain the correlation between competence and work productivity among fishermen in Lakologou Village. The research population consisted of fishermen who use motorboats in Lakologou Village, with a total of 26 respondents. The research sample was determined using the census method.  The data were collected through a combination of interviews, documentation, and surveys administered via a questionnaire. The research variables were subsequently divided into two categories: fisherman competency and fisherman productivity. Quantitative statistical analysis was utilized in this study. The results indicated that the competence of fishermen in Lakologou Village was in the good category, reflecting their ability to adequately master knowledge, skills, and work attitudes in fishing activities. The productivity of fishermen was also notably high, as evidenced by their capacity to achieve optimal catches, maintain the quality of marine products, and demonstrate work efficiency in the field. A correlation analysis reveals a robust and statistically significant relationship between the competence of fishermen and their work productivity. This indicates that an enhancement in competence leads to a direct increase in productivity. This finding underscores the significance of enhancing the capabilities of coastal human resources through training programs and the transfer of technological expertise. These measures are instrumental in enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of the fisheries sector.

Abstract

Work motivation is a critical factor that propels fishermen in Lelamo Village to enhance their income and well-being. When motivation is high, fishermen demonstrate increased engagement in resource utilization, skill development, and innovation in addressing the challenges that impede their success. These challenges encompass various social, economic, and technical factors. The objective of this study is to ascertain the factors that motivate fishermen in Lelamo Village, Kulisusu District. The research population comprised 44 fishermen who operated fishing boats in Lelamo Village. The sample was determined using the census method. The data collection techniques employed included the use of recordings, documentation, and surveys administered via questionnaires. In addition to conducting surveys with all fishermen, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews with five key informants. The research data was analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results indicated that the primary motivations for fishermen to engage in their profession were rooted in familial and social economic needs, with a subset of fishermen also expressing personal interest and satisfaction in their occupation. Moreover, the cultural and historical legacy of Lelamo Village, the considerable potential for fishing, and the accessibility of the fishing profession are among the primary factors that influence the community's decision to pursue this occupation. The role of internal factors in the motivation of capture fishermen in Lelamo Village is of particular interest. These factors include psychological (clothing, food, shelter) and physiological (affection, self-preservation, self-strengthening) needs, which greatly influence fishermen's motivation. The majority of fishermen exhibit high levels of motivation, with a balance in the fulfillment of basic and emotional needs. This dynamic supports the welfare and productivity of capture fishermen. The role of external factors in the motivation of capture fishermen indicates that working conditions, rewards, and accountability are among the various factors that greatly influence the motivation of the community to work as capture fishermen.
