Abstract

This study aims to determine the types, abundance and composition of the stranded marine debris and its impact on the mangrove ecosystem in Liquiça Municipality, Timor-Leste. Data were collected from 6 September 2024 to 30 October 2024 at three stations using surveys and direct field observations. Analysis was conducted both quantitatively and qualitatively. Seven types of debris were identified : plastic, metal, glass, rubber, fabric, organic and other inorganic waste. Plastic was the most dominant at all stations, Station 1 recorded the highest debris abundance at 1.62 items/m², with plastic waste also dominating by category at Stations 1 and 3 (155 items/m² and 137 items/m²). Station 1 also had the heaviest debris weight at 4,339 g/m² and the largest volume at 235 cm³/m². The findings indicate that stranded marine debris does have a negative impact on the mangrove ecosystem, significant negative correlation between the weight of marine debris and macrozoobenthos. However no correlation between debris and mangrove’s seedlings was found.

Abstract

Coastal areas possess a diverse potential wealth of natural resources that can be developed and utilized by humans, such as fisheries, marine tourism, and transportation. One form of disruption to the balance of coastal and marine ecosystems is the pollution caused by waste. The Karimunjawa Islands face serious challenges related to waste pollution. Therefore, an identification of carried out regarding the composition of polluting waste as well as impacts or disruptions caused by marine waste pollution on the mangrove ecosystem in the coastal areas of Karimunjawa Island and Kemujan Island. Various types of waste were found at the research site, including plastic, metal, glass, rubber, organic, and others. Based on the enteri locations of Karimunjawa Island and Kemujan Island, 370 items of plastic waste and macro-debris amounted to 442, predominantly on Lumbung Beach. The dominant mangrove is Rhizophora sp., which has muddy sandy substrate. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that this waste situation makes the coastal areas of Karimunjawa Island and Kemujan Island vulnerable to environmental pollution problems. The impact on the environment is a decrease in benthic biota density owing to the abundance of waste. The higher the density of waste, the lower the density of benthic species found in the mangrove ecosystemenvironment.

Abstract

This paper explores how the coastal community of Sangihe Island, North Sulawesi, Indonesia adapted from past disasters through internalization of bad memories. To build an understanding of the cultural construction of this adaptation, this paper uses a cultural ecology framework and information collected through phenomenological study to identify the primary socio-historical information derived from past disasters. The results of the research show that the community has internalized the memories of disaster through material and non-material culture, as well as spatial arrangements of infrastructure to address the multiple threats of volcanic eruption, tsunami and typhoon risks, witnessed by their ancestors. This paper shows that the communities of Sangihe apply embedded knowledge and experience into daily practices. This is one of the models of indigenous knowledge-based disaster risk reduction, which can be a foundation for the present generations outside Sangihe to minimize the impact of disasters.

Abstract

Microalgae are cultured as natural feed for the cultivation of mollusks, crustaceans (early larval stages), and zooplankton. Diatoms are phytoplankton groups commonly used as feed, one of which is Chaetoceros muelleri. This study aims to identify the optimal nitrate concentrations and light level (irradiance) for the growth rate of C. muelleri. Culture was placed in nitrate 1,330; 5,305; and 27,030 mg/L (N1, N2, N3, respectively); and light 50, 100, and 150 µmol/m2/s, with three replications for each treatment. The response variable observed was the growth rate of C. muelleri and nitrate uptake. Each nitrate treatment resulted in a significant difference in the growth rate of C. muelleri (LSD, p < 0.01). The N3 treatment produced the highest growth rate (average 0,188-0,193 cells/day), while N1 produced the lowest specific growth rate (average 0,149-0,157 /day). In light treatment, a significant difference was only seen in the light levelof 150 µmol/m2/s (LSD, p < 0.05) which produced the highest growth rate (average 0.157-0.193 cells/day), especially in the nitrate N1 and N2. Meanwhile based on the significance test, the interaction between nitrate and light treatment was not significant. Keywords: Chaetoceros muelleri; Growth rate; Irradiance; Nitrate

Abstract

This study aims to assess the ecological value and coral mortality in the horizontal marine zone of Beras Basah Island. The research was conducted by observing coral reefs at four stations positioned horizontally at depths of 3 meters and 5 meters using the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method. The key parameters analyzed in this study included coral cover percentage, diversity index, dominance index, evenness index, and mortality index. The recorded coral cover percentages were as follows: hard coral (26.91%), soft coral (16.42%), sponge (0.47%), other biotic components (0.44%), algae (5.86%), dead coral with algae (21.07%), dead coral (1.78%), sand (6.60%), rubble (9.26%), and silt (11.19%). The condition of coral reefs in the horizontal marine zone of Beras Basah Island was classified as moderate, with a live coral cover value of 26.91%, based on the classification by Gomez and Yap (1988). The highest diversity index value (2.46) was recorded at Station 1(a), indicating a relatively stable community structure, while the lowest diversity index value (1.98) was observed at Station 3(b), reflecting lower diversity and potential environmental stress or disturbance in the area. This is further supported by the highest dominance index value (0.17) also found at Station 3(b). The highest evenness index values (0.87) were observed at Stations 1(a) and 1(b), indicating stable communities with high similarity and evenness. The highest coral mortality index (0.53) was recorded at Station 2(a), located in the northern area at a depth of 3 meters in the waters of Beras Basah Island. Abstract

High TSS causes siltation around coastal areas in the Madura Strait. TSS impacts water quality and habitat health. It's necessary to know that TSS distribution can vary each season. The algorithm detects TSS distribution by processing Landsat-8 satellite image data. However, existing algorithms are sometimes only suitable for some instances, so the results do not correspond to actual conditions. Therefore, this paper wants to build a better detection model using Laili's algorithm to determine whether satellite image analysis can explain the exact conditions. Laili's algorithm detection was validated and corrected against field data via a correlation test. It’s necessary to know the spatial distribution pattern of data attribute values using the Moran Index. The results TSS in the dry season is 5-18 mg/L and covers an area of up to 4 km; in the rainy season, it is 5-22 mg/L and can cover an area of up to 7.8 km. Moran's Index results show that spatial autocorrelation in the distribution pattern results in a cluster pattern. These results show that the detection model is relatively reasonable and can be used as training data to detect the distribution of TSS in the Madura Strait in subsequent years.
