Abstract

Pelabuhan Perikanan Nusantara (PPN) Sibolga, a key capture fisheries hub in North Sumatra, supports a range of services and activities for fishing stakeholders. Purse seine vessels, predominantly used by fishermen at PPN Sibolga, target pelagic species such as kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). This study analyzes income disparities among fishermen based on the profit-sharing system applied to purse seine vessels at PPN Sibolga. Conducted from March 4 to April 4, 2024, the study employed a survey method, collecting primary data on fish weight (kg), selling price (IDR), vessel size (GT), and operational costs, alongside secondary data on fishing gear statistics and regional information from PPN Sibolga. Data were analyzed descriptively to elucidate the income-sharing structure. Findings indicate that the average operational cost per trip for a purse seine vessel is IDR 199,458,550, with an average revenue of IDR 443,046,000 and a net profit of IDR 232,597,867. The profit-sharing system allocates 60% of the net profit (after fixed costs) to the vessel owner and 40% to the crew, with the skipper receiving 8.10%, senior crew (engineers, officers, cooks) 5.40%, supporting crew 4.05%, and regular crew 2.70%. The study reveals significant income disparities among crew members, driven by their roles and the established profit-sharing structure in purse seine operations at PPN Sibolga

Abstract

Ekosistem mangrove merupakan vegetasi pesisir yang memiliki banyak peran dan fungsi dalam ekologi serta memberikan manfaat sosial-ekonomi bagi masyarakat pesisir. Namun, kurangnya pemahaman masyarakat tentang pentingnya ekosistem mangrove menyebabkan degradasi kawasan yang berdampak pada penurunan produktivitas perikanan. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kesadaran masyarakat nelayan Kampung Nelayan, Tanjung Jabung Barat mengenai fungsi ekosistem mangrove secara ekologi dan ekonomi, dampak kerusakan mangrove, serta upaya pelestarian. Metode pelaksanaan berupa sosialisasi dengan pendekatan ceramah, diskusi, dan pembagian handout kepada kelompok nelayan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman peserta tentang konsep ekosistem mangrove, perannya dalam siklus karbon, fungsi sebagai habitat biota, dan dampaknya terhadap hasil tangkapan nelayan. Peserta menunjukkan antusiasme tinggi yang terlihat dari diskusi aktif mengenai upaya pelestarian mangrove melalui penanaman dan pengelolaan sampah laut. Kegiatan ini memberikan kontribusi positif dalam membangun kesadaran lingkungan masyarakat pesisir untuk menjaga kelestarian ekosistem mangrove sebagai penunjang keberlanjutan mata pencaharian nelayan.

Abstract

The Batang Asai River in Sarolangun Regency, Jambi, is one of the major rivers with a length of approximately 104 km. Currently, its water quality is declining due to anthropogenic activities such as land clearing, settlements, and mining. This condition threatens the sustainability of fish populations, particularly those from the Cyprinidae family, which are important food fish and sensitive to environmental degradation. However, scientific information regarding the bioecology and spatial distribution of Cyprinidae in this area remains very limited. Therefore, this study is necessary to provide baseline data to support adaptive conservation strategies and fisheries management. The objectives of this research are to identify Cyprinidae species, analyze bioecological aspects (morphometrics, diversity, reproduction, and habitat characteristics), map spatial distribution based on GIS, and determine conservation status according to the IUCN Red List. The study was conducted in August 2025 at three observation stations. The methods used include field surveys, bioecological analysis, and GIS-based spatial mapping. The results showed that 19 species of Cyprinidae were identified with a total of 482 individuals. The fish diversity index value of 2.07 indicates a moderate diversity category, with an evenness value of 0.70 and a dominance value of 0.17. The sex ratio of males to females was 1.9:1, dominated by fish at gonadal maturity stage (GMS) I with 263 individuals. In general, the water quality of the Batang Asai River still supports fish life, and no species were classified as threatened according to the IUCN Red List.

Abstract

Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province, has considerable potential for marine capture fisheries; however, fisheries development still faces several sustainability challenges, including the dominance of traditional fishing technology, limited infrastructure, weak market access, low post-harvest quality control, and increasing pressure on fish resources. These conditions indicate the need for a fisheries development strategy aligned with the Blue Economy concept, which emphasizes economic growth while maintaining the sustainability of marine ecosystems and improving coastal community welfare. This study aims to formulate a data-based capture fisheries development strategy in West Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency using SWOT, TOWS, and QSPM approaches. The research was conducted from April 2024 to February 2025 in the Kuala Tungkal Fisheries Center, West Tanjung Jabung Regency. The results indicate that the major strengths include the potential of the fish resource and government support, while the main weaknesses are the dominance of traditional fishing gear and limited fisheries infrastructure. Significant opportunities include strong domestic and international market demand, whereas threats include destructive fishing practices and global market competition. Twelve alternative strategies were identified. The priority strategy is strengthening fisheries market integration through improved product quality, marketing networks, and institutional support. In addition, fisheries infrastructure improvement and environmentally friendly fishing technology adoption are essential to support Blue Economy-based fisheries management. These strategies are expected to enhance fisheries productivity, improve coastal community welfare, and maintain sustainable fishery resources in West Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems in the coastal area of West Tanjung Jabung Regency are under increasing pressure from anthropogenic activities, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring of changes in their spatial extent and density. This study aims to analyze the changes in the area and density of mangrove ecosystems along the coastal region of Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency during the period 2015–2024 using Landsat 8 OLI satellite imagery. The data were obtained from the USGS Earth Explorer (path 125, row 61) with cloud cover less than 10%. Image processing involved several stages, including preprocessing, band composition, visual digitization, and supervised classification using ArcGIS 10.8 software. Mangrove vegetation density was analyzed using the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), which was categorized into three density classes: sparse, moderate, and dense. The results showed that the total mangrove area decreased by 14%, from 3,488.78 ha in 2015 to 3,009.98 ha in 2024, representing a reduction of approximately 478.8 ha. The most significant decreases occurred in Sinar Kalimantan Village (172.82 ha) and Sungai Dualap Village (42%), while a slight increase was observed in Pangkal Duri Ilir Village (1%). The NDVI-based density analysis indicated that dense mangrove areas increased substantially in Muara Seberang Village by 377.54 ha, whereas the largest decline occurred in Sinar Kalimantan Village by 78.72 ha. Overall, the findings reveal a trend of mangrove degradation mainly driven by land conversion and anthropogenic activities, alongside localized improvements likely due to rehabilitation efforts. These results provide valuable insights for sustainable management and conservation planning of mangrove ecosystems in the coastal zone of Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency

Abstract

Supply management is a critical component in hand line fishing vessel operations lasting 10–20 days at sea, as it directly affects operational cost efficiency and catch quality. This study aimed to identify and analyze the supply management system of hand line vessels at Bungus Oceanic Fishing Port, covering procurement, storage, maintenance, and control stages, as well as identifying the main constraints faced by fishers. A descriptive method with a qualitative approach was employed through observation and purposive interviews involving captains, crew members, vessel owners, port officers, and logistics suppliers from October to December 2023. The results indicate that the supply management system has been relatively well-structured; procurement is based on estimated trip duration and crew size with an average cost of IDR 25–30 million per trip for 24–30 GT vessels, storage is organized by categorizing wet, dry, and high-demand goods, maintenance includes ice protection, freshwater monitoring, and controlled daily consumption, while control mechanisms involve daily recording, usage limitation of high-demand items, and post-trip evaluation of remaining supplies. The main challenges include limited storage space on smaller vessels and the absence of standardized supply requirements based on vessel tonnage and trip duration. Overall, the supply management system is considered adequate but remains experience-based, highlighting the need for standardized supply guidelines and a more systematic logistics recording system to improve efficiency and planning accuracy.

Abstract

program and iftar gathering at Pesantren Tuna Netra and SLB Cahaya Qur’an, Bogor Regency. The program was conducted through preparation, implementation, evaluation, and reporting stages. The preparation stage included a needs assessment, fundraising, and coordination with the boarding school management. The implementation stage involved the distribution of social assistance, interactive sessions, motivational activities, Qur’an reading, and communal iftar. The results indicated that social support provided by academics and university students improved the psychological comfort, self-confidence, and motivation of visually impaired students. Warm interactions and a sense of togetherness played an important role in creating a supportive and inclusive environment. Although there were limitations in time and available assistance, the activity had a positive impact on the students and strengthened social relationships among academics, students, and the boarding school community.

Abstract

The nilem fish (Osteochilus hasselti) is one of the most easily caught fish in Teluk Lake. Currently, cage farming activity in the lake slightly exceeds the water carrying capacity, which is suspected to affect the life of fish in the lake, including nilem. This study aimed to determine the condition factor and Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) of the nilem catch in the lake. This study was conducted from August to September 2023 in Teluk Lake. This research used a survey method with simple census sampling techniques. The analysis of the length-weight relationship of nilem fish obtained from Teluk Lake showed a positive allometric relationship with a value of b = 3.7148. It showed that the increase in body weight of nilem fish was not linear with the increase in length. The catch results by fishermen for nilem fish found a male-to-female sex ratio of 1:2.15, with 90% of the captured fish in a mature gonad condition. The GSI for females ranged from 3.20% to 8.33% and for males, from 0.03% to 28.89%. The first maturation size (Lm) for male fish was 125.847, with a size class range of 116–126 mm. For female fish, the first maturation size calculation resulted in 112.996 with a size range in the 104–113 mm class. Lm is smaller than the average size of the captured fish, indicating that it is safe to catch, and there is a low likelihood of recruitment overfishing. Abstract

Anchovy is one of potential commodities widely found and caught by fishermen in FMA-572 West Sumatra. Examining its exploitation rate is a part of taking control and monitor toward the fishing activities to avoid overfishing possibility. This recent study aims to calculate exploitation rate and oceanographic characteristics of anchovy fishing grounds. The data was collected from Bungus Oceanic Fishing Port, West Sumatra in 2018-2022. Meanwhile, sea surface temperature and chlorophyll data were obtained from https://marine.copernicus.eu/ and https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov 2018-2022, respectively. The results showed that the exploitation rate of anchovies in 2020 and 2022 has exceeded maximum sustainable yield categorized as overexploitation with a percentage of 130.44% and 112.84%. Anchovy catches are significantly influenced by oceanographic factors with F value 0.00000115 ( 0.05). An increase in CPUE value is align with chlorophyll increase and in contrary to sea surface temperature. Abstract

The condition of the Batang Asai River in Sarolangun Regency, Jambi, has experienced a decline in water quality due to anthropogenic activities such as land clearing, settlement, and mining. This condition threatens the sustainability of fish populations, especially those from the Cyprinidae family, which are an important and environmentally sensitive group of fish for consumption, one of which is the lampam (Barbonymus schwanefeldii). However, scientific information on the bioecology of lampam in this region is very limited. Therefore, this research is needed to provide basic data to support adaptive conservation and fisheries management strategies. This study aims to analyze the growth patterns and gonadal maturity levels of lampam in the Batang Asai River, Sarolangun Regency, as a basis for inland fisheries management. A total of 113 fish, consisting of 64 males and 49 females, were observed. Male fish had a positive allometric growth pattern, while female fish had an isometric growth pattern. Analysis of Gonad Maturity Level (GML) found fish with GML I to GML IV, but immature gonads dominated the condition of the fish. In general, the water quality of the Batang Asai River still supports fish life, as can be seen from the growth patterns of the fish, but most of the fish found during the study were still immature despite the presence of fish with GML I to GML IV.
