Abstract

The aim of this research is to conduct a thorough bibliometric literature review of the complex and multifaceted relationships between language, ethnicity, and learning, using sophisticated computational techniques to map and analyze academic scholarship across diverse interdisciplinary domains. Using modern data mining and network analysis approaches, the researchers deconstructed established educational research paradigms by carefully examining publication trends, citation networks, and topic clusters. The complete investigation indicated that linguistic and ethnic variety are not educational impediments, but rather rich reservoirs of cultural information and cognitive flexibility, calling into question traditional deficit-oriented theories of academic comprehension. The findings revealed that bilingual and multilingual learners had significantly improved cognitive capacities, such as superior executive functioning, metacognitive skills, and cross-cultural problem-solving abilities, which go beyond typical monolingual learning frameworks. The study revealed significant regional discrepancies in knowledge production, with academic work mostly centered in North American and European institutional environments, emphasizing systemic imbalances in global knowledge formation. By repositioning linguistic and cultural diversity as fundamental intellectual strengths rather than limitations, the study offers transformative insights into developing more inclusive, equitable, and dynamic educational strategies capable of effectively responding to the complexities of an increasingly interconnected global academic and technological landscape. The findings not only challenge existing educational paradigms, but also offer a nuanced, comprehensive framework for understanding cognitive potential across diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, eventually advocating for a more holistic, culturally responsive approach to learning and academic

Abstract

This research is motivated by the relevance of the deep learning approach, which emphasizes in-depth understanding, active engagement, and application of knowledge, in line with the demands of 21st-century education and the Freedom to Learn policy. However, students' perceptions of this approach, as the primary subjects of learning, are still limited in Indonesia. Therefore, this study focuses on exploring the perceptions of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students regarding the implementation of deep learning in higher education. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through open-ended interviews with 105 sixth-semester students. The data were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The analysis revealed four main themes of student perception: (1) the importance of meaningful understanding beyond mere memorization, (2) the development of critical and reflective thinking, (3) the need for active learner involvement, and (4) the significance of applying knowledge in real-world contexts. These findings indicate that students understand the essence of deep learning and consider it crucial for relevant and applicable learning. It is concluded that students have positive perceptions and support the deep learning approach, indicating the need for student-centered learning design to optimize the potential of this approach.

Abstract

This article explains the theory of speech acts proposed by John L. Austin and his student John R. Searle. Speech act theory is a sub-field of pragmatics. This field of study deals with the ways in which words can be used not only to present information but also to carry out actions. This theory considers three levels or components of speech: locutionary acts (the making of a meaningful statement, saying something that a hearer understands), illocutionary acts (saying something with a purpose, such as to inform), and perlocutionary acts (saying something that causes someone to act). Many view speech acts as the central units of communication, with phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic properties of an utterance serving as ways of identifying the meaning of a speaker’s utterance or illocutionary force. There are five types of Illocutionary points according to Searle: declarations, assertives, expressives, directives, and commissives (1979:viii). A speech act, in order to be successful, needs to be performed along with certain types of conditions. These conditions were categorized by the linguist John Searle, who introduced the term felicity conditions: propositional content condition, preparatory condition, sincerity condition, and essential condition.
