Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) to enhance literacy skills among children aged 5-6. Employing a quasi-experimental design, 30 TK Cornerstone Homestyle Education students were selected and divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group engaged in PjBL integrated with STEAM, while the control group followed conventional methods. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to assess literacy skills, focusing on reading habits, symbol recognition, word writing, and constructing written pieces. Data were collected through tests and observation sheets and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics via IBM SPSS Statistics version 21. Results showed significant literacy skill improvements in the experimental group compared to the control group, with higher post-test scores and increased engagement. Instrument validity was confirmed through item analysis, and reliability was ensured with a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.74. Observations revealed high implementation quality in both groups, but the experimental group demonstrated a more substantial increase in literacy levels. This study concludes that STEAM-integrated PjBL effectively enhances early literacy, promotes creativity, and engages students actively in learning. The findings imply the need for broader application of this method in early childhood education and suggest further research to explore long-term impacts and applicability across diverse educational contexts. Despite limitations such as sample scope and short-term intervention, this research supports adopting interdisciplinary approaches for improved educational outcomes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe parental involvement in school programs at Nurul Iman Islamic Kindergarten, Mataram City, as an effort to support the advancement of early childhood education (ECE). This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data collection techniques were carried out through triangulation, and data analysis was conducted inductively/qualitatively, with the researcher serving as the primary instrument. The study subjects included classroom teachers, the kindergarten principal, and parents of the children. Data analysis was conducted systematically by organizing, categorizing, synthesizing, and interpreting data from interviews, field notes, and documentation. The results indicate eight forms of parental involvement in school programs, including Committee Meetings, Inspiration Classes, Parent Classes, Parenting Classes, Sabtu Budaya, Outing Classes, Parent-Child Competitions, and the Maulid Nabi celebration. This involvement significantly benefits and supports the educational development of children. The parental involvement programs were successfully implemented and aligned with the planned objectives. Parents were not merely financial supporters but also participants, supporters, decision-makers, program implementers, and school committee members. This demonstrates strong collaboration between the school and parents in supporting early childhood education. The study, conducted in a single Islamic kindergarten, limits generalizability to broader contexts. Future research should compare diverse educational settings, incorporate parent surveys, and focus on long-term impacts. Reliance on interviews and documentation may overlook socio-economic influences. Additionally, researcher subjectivity suggests the need for more standardized methodologies.

Abstract

Early childhood literacy issues are often overlooked, especially in the context of parents' lack of involvement in building a holistic literacy culture in the family environment. Many parents focus too much on early reading, writing and counting (calistung) skills, neglecting the importance of play and language interactions that support children's motor, social and emotional development. In addition, the use of gadgets as a way to soothe children has led to a reduction in active and interactive play activities. This research uses a literature study approach with a systematic literature review method to analyze the importance of literacy culture in the family. Data were collected through scientific journals using certain keywords and then analyzed descriptively. The research subjects were relevant literature on literacy culture development, early childhood and family environment. The results show that strategies that families can implement include: introducing books early on, reading with children, encouraging children to hold books, reducing the use of electronic devices, creating an interactive learning environment, and involving children in daily activities such as playing in the garden, cooking, cleaning the house and other creative activities. In conclusion, family involvement in building a literacy culture can improve children's literacy skills and interest in reading from an early age, with the implication that family education is very important in supporting children's overall literacy development.
