Abstract

Mathematical representation encompasses verbal, visual, and symbolic forms, allowing students to articulate and manipulate mathematical ideas effectively. The review indicates that students with strong representation abilities perform better academically, as these skills facilitate deeper comprehension and application of mathematical principles. A systematic review of mathematics representation ability in education during 2019-2024 in this study from 2019 to 2024, Data collection was carried out by reviewing or reviewing all articles on mathematics representation ability in education published in the period 2019-2024. The articles used in this study were 3 articles from Scopus, and 2 articles from Google Scholar from international and national journals with the help of Publish or Perish software and VOSViewer. The results of this literature review suggest that specific research needs to be conducted on how to improve mathematics representation abbility, the school levels tested, as well as their applicability in education.

Abstract

Problem-solving ability is one of the abilities developed in the mathematics curriculum in various countries. The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the proportion of support for improving problem-solving abilities in high school mathematics curriculum documents in Finland and Indonesia, (2) determine the comparison of support in improving problem-solving abilities in high school mathematics curriculum documents in Finland and Indonesia. The method of this study is Study Literature Review (SLR). The data collection technique is documentation. The data analysis technique used is meta-synthesis with a meta-aggregation approach. The results of the study obtained (1) the proportion of problem-solving abilities in the components of the high school mathematics curriculum in both Finland and Indonesia was 44%. (2) the similarities between the Finnish and Indonesian curricula at the high school level to improve mathematical problem-solving abilities are in the aspect of mathematics learning, there are transversal components, there are general objectives and study objectives/learning achievements, the availability of modules and assessments, while the differences between the Finnish and Indonesian curricula at the high school level to improve mathematical problem-solving abilities are in the components of mathematical objectives and evaluation. In Indonesia, problem solving is one of the focuses of general mathematics objectives. Although in Finland the general objectives of mathematics do not include problem solving, they appear in each study objective. In the Finnish curriculum, the focus of evaluation includes problem solving and the obligation to use technology in evaluation, while in the Indonesian curriculum, evaluation is focused on initial, process, and final learning assessments.

Abstract

Comparing a curriculum with the other more developed countries is essential for benchmarking the quality of education in the country. Switzerland deserves to be the object of comparison with the world's second-ranked Human Development Index. This article aims to compare the current curriculum in Indonesia, namely the 2013 curriculum, with the current curriculum in Switzerland, especially on school mathematics. The focus of the comparison lies in (1) school mathematics curriculum and (2) school mathematics content. This research is a qualitative research type of library research. We conducted a literature study, paid attention to the relevance of the literature, and analyzed it using data presentation, data reduction, and concluding. The results showed that with the education system in Switzerland, which emphasizes vocational education, the school mathematics curriculum places more emphasis on problem-solving. The contents are numbers, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, changes and relationships, and problem-solving. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the school mathematics curriculum is designed for every level of education with problem-based learning, project-based learning, and discovery learning models. School mathematics content includes numbers, algebra, geometry, relations and functions, statistics, and probability.

Abstract

This study explores how integrating Mobile Math Trails within the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model can effectively support numeracy learning. This research was conducted using a design research method with an exploratory approach focused on the design experiment stage. The study involved eighth-grade students from SMP N 39 Semarang. Data was collected through observation, questionnaires, portfolios of students’ work, and interviews. The findings show that Mobile Math Trails-supported learning using PBL model can be an alternative numeracy reinforcement learning. The tasks design students explore around the school environment refers to numeracy indicators with specific content, context, and cognitive levels. The features embedded within the Mobile Math Trails application assist students in the problem-solving process. The tasks designed within the application foster a direct link between mathematical concepts and real-world scenarios within the school environment, thereby necessitating students' reasoning skills. Active student involvement is crucial in this learning, as collaboration among peers is essential for generating optimal learning experiences. Moreover, the learning steps outlined in the research necessitate students' physical engagement. Future studies could explore the application of numeracy reinforcement learning facilitated by Mobile Math Trails in diverse environments.

Abstract

Probabilistic thinking is one type of thinking skills which belongs to the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Students need to have the probabilistic thinking ability to face the life which is full of uncertainty. The purpose of this research is to formulate the stages of mathematical probabilistic thinking processes in solving probability problems. It was a descriptive qualitative research involving eight students of the 9th grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Mlati Sleman Yogyakarta as the subjects. We administered a probabilistic thinking test and then observed and interviewed them to get the data. The data were then analyzed using triangulation method. This study resulted the five stages of mathematical probabilistic thinking process. They are: (1) understanding the problem of uncertainty that needs to be solved; (2) identifying all possibilities that will occur from a problem; (3) grouping the results of the identified event; (4) determining the probability of the occurred events; and (5) verifying the results.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy, as defined by the OECD, encompasses the ability to formulate, use, and interpret mathematics in various real-life contexts. This study aims to analyze how mathematical literacy is integrated into the Australian curriculum, given the importance of this competency in 21st-century education. Utilizing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, this study identifies, analyzes, and synthesizes relevant articles from the Scopus database .Analysis of these articles revealed that mathematical literacy is integrated through four main approaches. First, the development of new curriculum elements, such as linking numeracy with interdisciplinary concepts, enhances the relevance of learning. Second, the use of data from standardized tests, such as NAPLAN, supports data-driven interventions, although this approach is often mechanistic. Third, context- and culture-based learning, including the use of interdisciplinary activities and early childhood games, increases student engagement. Fourth, teacher training is pivotal to the successful implementation of integration strategies. This study provides conceptual and practical insights for developing inclusive, evidence-based, and diversity-responsive curricula. However, its reliance on literature necessitates further studies to evaluate the direct implementation of these strategies in Australian schools. The findings are expected to support flexible and effective educational policies to improve students’ mathematical literacy.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are among the skills developed within the mathematics curriculum. This study aims to describe the role of HOTS in the Mathematics Curriculum in Malaysia. The research method employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using data sources from journals published between 2019 and 2024, obtained from Google Scholar and Scopus. The results show that: (1) the Standard Curriculum for Secondary Schools (KSSM) in Mathematics has been redesigned and refined to equip students with theknowledge, skills, and values necessary to meet the demands of the 21st century and to develop individuals with mathematical thinking abilities, including Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS); and (2) HOTS are explicitly stated within the curriculum to enable teachers to integrate them into the teaching and learning process, thus stimulating structured and focused student thinking. These skills encompass the application of knowledge, abilities, and values for reasoning, reflecting, problem-solving, decision-making, innovating, and creating
