Abstract

Teachers often face challenges when introducing new concepts that students are unfamiliar with, and students are rarely accustomed to connecting prior knowledge to construct new concepts. These teacher-related barriers and student difficulties contribute to low conceptual understanding. To address this, innovative learning strategies such as the application of PhET simulations combined with problem-solving models can be implemented. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Kateman to examine the effect of PhET simulation integrated with a problem-solving model on students’ conceptual understanding. The study employed an experimental design with a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent posttest-only control group. Data were collected using a conceptual understanding test consisting of 33 reasoned multiple-choice questions and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that students in the experimental class outperformed those in the control class, demonstrating a significant improvement in conceptual understanding through the PhET simulation with a problem-solving model.

Abstract

This study is intended to create a physics e- Module on a sound wave material of Science, Technology and Engineering and Mathematically (STEM) to enhance the problem solving skills of high school students. Researchers are not only generating digital learning products; they are also responsible in offering new innovations; how they can incorporate STEM structures in solving problem skills. The novelty of this study is connected with the use of STEM, which is not oriented on the material only, but a set of scientific thinking operations: defining real-life problems, processing scientific ideas, planning technological outcomes, and mathematically assessing the resulting outcomes. The research method used was Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) development model. The resulting product was tested for validity by material, media, and pedagogical experts, and for practicality by teachers and students. Validation results showed that the e-module is highly valid with an average score above 3.26 across all aspects, while the practicality test indicated that the e-module is very easy to use and effective in supporting the learning process. The research results demonstrate that this STEM-based e-module is capable of guiding students to understand the concept of sound waves contextually, training critical and reflective thinking abilities, and systematically improving problem-solving skills. Thus, the main contribution of this research is presenting an e-module development model that utilizes STEM as a methodological framework for problem-based learning on abstract physics material, which has not been widely applied in previous research.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to ascertain the impact of using the STEM approach in learning science and physics. The 20 research articles whose findings were examined in this study were all published in journals between 2018 and 2022. Effect size values used in the meta-analysis in this study were calculated using the OpenMEE program. Four indicators—level of education, learning models, learning media, and higher-order thinking skills—can be used to determine the impact of STEM (HOTS) learning. The average effect size on educational attainment is 1,590 at the junior high school level and 1,440 at the senior high school level. The average effect size for STEM learning with the PjBL learning model is 1.490, PBL is 1.250 and inquiry learning is 0.333. According to the average effect size results obtained for LKPD of 1.878, module of 1.818, and LKP of 1.503, this study examines the impact of STEM on the media. The average effect size score was obtained for higher order thinking skills (HOTS) for problem solving skills of 1.699, critical thinking skills of 1.899, scientific literacy abilities of 1.126, concept understanding of 0.997, and creative thinking abilities of 0.951. According to the findings of the effect size study, STEM learning is appropriate for use at the junior high school level with the PjBL learning approach using LKPD learning media to strengthen students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' creative thinking and written communication skills through the application of project-based learning methods (PjBL) on alternative energy materials. The study was conducted at MAN 2 Pekanbaru City, class X.5, involving 36 students. This classroom action research was carried out in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, evaluation, and reflection. The instruments used included teaching modules, student worksheets (LKPD), observation sheets, and test questions. The results showed a significant increase in students' creative thinking skills. In cycle I, the fluency indicator reached 76%, flexibility 73%, originality 36%, and elaboration 63%. In cycle II, each indicator increased to 78%, 87%, 76%, and 87%. Written communication skills also increased, with the dimension of changing the form of data presentation increasing from 72% in cycle I to 78% in cycle II, and the accuracy of using tables and graphs from 79% to 87%. The PjBL method provides opportunities for students to be actively involved in learning through project activities that encourage creative thinking and effective communication. The results of this study indicate that the PjBL method is effective in improving students' cognitive and communication skills, although it requires further adjustments related to classroom management.

Abstract

The research aims to develop an interactive electronic module based on Creative Problem Solving (CPS) about motion and force that is oriented towards improving students’ motivation and learning outcomes. The development uses the Research and Development (R&D) model with the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of needs analysis, material design, validation, and practicality testing. The developed e-module contains various interactive features such as learning videos, reflection links, and contextual problem-solving activities that integrate the steps of CPS, namely understanding the problem, generating ideas, planning action, and implementing the solution. The results of validation by experts stated that the e-module is included in the very valid category, both in terms of content, pedagogy, appearance, language, and graphics, all of which are in the very valid category. Practical tests conducted by teachers and students proved that the e-module is included in the very practical category, is easy to use, and attractive for users. These findings indicate that the developed interactive e-module based on CPS is suitable for use in science learning to foster motivation and support the improvement of students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

Education plays an important role in the advancement of science and technology in society. However, many teachers still face obstacles in utilizing mobile devices as interactive learning media, particularly in terms of understanding how to use the media and developing operational skills. This condition limits the variety of learning activities that can be presented in the classroom and reduces the optimal use of technology. This community service program was carried out through training involving 80 teachers from the MGMP IPA Pekanbaru City, focusing on the planning, implementation, and assessment of interactive media–based learning. The training was designed to provide teachers with hands-on experience in operating devices, becoming familiar with essential features, and integrating them into the teaching and learning process. This activity is expected to improve teachers’ understanding and skills in utilizing educational technology, thereby enabling them to be more proficient in using interactive media in the classroom. Consequently, teachers will be better prepared to face the challenges of technological development and contribute to improving the quality of education in schools.
