Abstract

Multimodal text is one of the media in learning English reading courses commonly used in this advanced technology era, since multimodal texts combine a variety of modes, such as visual and auditory. Moreover, multimodal texts have several positive effects on improving students’ reading ability, especially reading comprehension. However, reading aloud without comprehending the text's meaning still probably occurs among EFL students in Indonesia. Thus, this research aims to explore the students’ responses to multimodal texts in learning reading courses and the contribution of multimodal texts to the student’s reading comprehension. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. A questionnaire and a test were applied to collect the data. Fourteen ninth-grade students of MTs Miftahul Huda were chosen as participants. The result shows that most students responded positively to multimodal texts in the learning reading course. Multimodal texts may make the students enjoy, be interested, and be motivated in the learning process and help them understand the information in the text. It may also have a good contribution to the students’ reading comprehension. Nevertheless, the role of the teacher is critical in the learning process. Teachers can use a variety of multimodal texts in teaching reading course to take the advantage of multimodal texts in learning reading course

Abstract

AbstractIn order to enhance quality human resources through better education, it is crucial to focus on developing a literacy culture from an early age. In Indonesia, attention to literacy remains a challenge, with relatively low literacy rankings on a global scale. To address this challenge, a community service program was conducted involving read-aloud training at PAUD Kober Pelangi. This initiative adopted a descriptive qualitative approach, divided into three phases: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The activity engaged 20 young children at PAUD Kober Pelangi and aimed to introduce and foster reading interest through the read-aloud method. Data was collected through direct observation. The results of this training show a significant increase in children's reading interest and a positive contribution to their literacy skill development. This training not only successfully cultivated literacy interest but also reinforced the early foundation for reading habits that will positively impact literacy quality in the future.

Abstract

This paper delves into the outcomes of a training program aimed at enhancing language and literary literacy skills among inmates at PKBM At-Taubah Lapas II B Cianjur. These literacy skills are crucial for inmates' success in both the workplace and within their communities. The training program was structured into three distinct classes: language, character development, and literary development (poetry musicalization). The target participants were 25 inmates. Throughout the training, the inmates actively engaged in the learning activities. In the language class, while their speaking abilities were generally satisfactory, not all inmates were comfortable presenting in front of the class. Only three inmates volunteered to present when asked. In the character development and poetry musicalization classes, inmates were divided into groups and tasked with creating a musicalized poem. While their public speaking skills in the context of language literacy still require improvement due to confidence issues, the inmates successfully produced a group performance of their musicalized poetry creations.
