Abstract

ABSTRACT This study dealt with the improvement of students’ narrative writing achievement through Experiential Learning. The objective of this study was to find out whether students’ achievement in narrative writing can be improved if the students are taught by using Experiential Learning technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this study was class XI IA-1 of SMA Negeri 4 Pematangsiantar, consisted of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles; each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of data collections were writing tests for the quantitative data, and observation sheets and diary notes for the qualitative data. By the end of Cycle II there was an improvement as much as 25.56 points in the mean of the students’ score or 50.7% higher than the preliminary test. The research findings proved that Experiential Learning can significantly improve students’ achievement in narrative writing.   Keywords: Narrative Writing, Experiential Learning, Students’ Achievement

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims at improving the students‟ achievement in writing narrative text through cubing technique. The underlying objective of this study is to investigate whether teaching narrative by applying cubing technique potentially improves students‟ skill. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The population was the 2012-2013 eleven grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Binjai. The number of students was 42, consisting of females and males. The procedure of the research was administrated into two cycles where each cycle consisted of three meetings. Each meeting included four steps namely: planning, action, observation, and reflection. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the qualitative data was the writing of narrative test while the qualitative data were gathered by using interview, diary notes and observation sheet. Based on the data analysis, the mean of students‟ score in Test I was 61.85; for the Test II was 73.85, and for the Test III was 80. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested in the applying of cubing technique. The conclusion is that the application of cubing technique in writing narrative improves the students‟ achievement in writing narrative.Keywords: achievement, writing, narrative, cubing technique

Abstract

This study is about teacher’s oral feedback towards students’ response in speaking skill in SMAS 2 Muhammadiyah Medan. This study aims to find out teacher’s feedback used in English classroom interaction and to find out the reasons why the teacher uses the dominant feedback during teaching and learning process in English classroom interaction at eleventh grade students in academic year of 2019/2020. The subject of this research was 33 students. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were collected by using observation, audio recording, documentation and interview for supported the data. The data were analyzed by using Ellis (2009) theory. The result showed that 17 praise which is (37%), 7 recast which is (15,2%), 6 metalinguistic feedback which is (13%), 13 repetation which is (28,3%), 3 paralinguistic signals which is (6,5%). So the dominant type of feedback used by the teacher in class XI MIA 1 of SMAS 2 Muhammadiyah Medan is praise which is 40%. There are 3 reasons why teacher used the dominant type: (1) the teacher only know the general feedback, (2) to encourage the students to be more enthusiastic in responding to the teacher and (3) the teacher only focused on positive feedback. This research is expected to be an inspiration for other researcher to conduct more conductive research in the future about feedback in learning English.Keywords: teacher’s feedback, response, speaking skill.

Abstract

This study focused on the readability of reading texts in English textbooks for grade XII students in the academic year of 2018/2019 based on Dale and Chall formula. This study was categorized as descriptive qualitative research. The source of the data were 5 reading texts which consist of report, news item and procedure texts selected from English for Senior High School Students XII. The average readability score report texts in textbook was 6.9, while news item and procedure text in were 7.45 and 6.15. The scores indicated that the report text, news item and procedure text in English for Senior High School Students XII textbook were too easy for the twelfth grade students since the textbooks’ level was for the seventh and eighth grade.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to increase students’ vocabulary achievement by using flash cards. The objective of the study is to investigate whether the using of flash card can improve students’ vocabulary achievement. This study conduct by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study of SD Negeri 174559 Siraituruk, Porsea which consisted of 34 students. For collecting data, the instruments used were quantitative (vocabulary test) and qualitative data (interview sheet, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the data, it was found that the mean of the second cycle (80, 44) is higher than the mean of first cycle (64, 85) and pre-test (44, 41).  Based on interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes, it was found thee students were more active and more enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. It was concluded that teaching vocabulary by using  flash cards can improve the students’ vocabulary achievement.   Keywords : Flash Cards, Vocabulary, Action Research

Abstract

Abstract The objective of the study was to find out how effective the use of Small Group Discussion Method (SGD) in teaching speaking especially in asking and giving opinion. It was conducted as an action research which has two cycles. Each cycle has three meetings. The subject of the research was students of eleventh grade IPA-2 at SMA Negeri 1 Sei Rampah which consisted of forty-four students. The instruments of data collection were primary and secondary data. While the primary data was conducted by administering students’ speaking score in every cycle, the secondary data was conducted by the three instruments; observation sheet, questionnaire and field notes. Based on the speaking tests, students’ score improved from the first evaluation to the last evaluation. In the first test, the mean was 58,55. The second test obtained the mean 67,07 and in the last test the mean of the students was 73,50. Based on the observation sheet, questionnaire sheet and field notes, it was found that learning activity ran well. Most students felt interested in the process of learning activity and involved in their group during the discussion time. The result of the research showed that Small Group Discussion Method was able to improve students’ achievement in asking and giving opinion. Abstract

This research is aimed at analyzing the reading materialson the quality of English textbook Bright published by Erlanggafor the first grade studentsof junior high school.This study was designed as a documentary analysis in the form of descriptive qualitative research, in which the result would be described in the form of words without any statistical calculation. The data were collected from the reading section in the textbook. As supplementary tools of the instrument, forms of checklist were used during the research analysis. The result showed that the reading materials in Bright textbook were appropriate with the criteria of qualified English textbook suggested by PusatPerbukuan, Ministry of National Education. There were only two nonconformities found in the textbook: (a) there were some reading materials which were not presented in the textbook and (b) there were no reading materials which could encourage the development of technology and arts.Key words: analysis, relevance, reading materials, textbook, the 2013 curriculum

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims at improving students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph by using Movie Posters. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X SMA Negeri I Galang, which consist of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles which cycle I and cycle II consist of 3 meetings. The instruments for collecting data were qualitative (interview, diary notes, and observation sheet) and quantitative data(writing test). Based on the data analysis, the mean of students’ score in Test I was 56,38 ; for the Test II was 68,05 , and for the Test III was 85. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested by using Movie Posters. The conclusion is that by using Movie Posters improves the students’ achievement in writing descriptive. Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the interpersonal meaning realization on teacher talk and to describe the underlying reason of its realization. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The data were the talks of English teacher at SMA SwastaTeladan Medan. The data were analyzed based on interpersonal meaning analysis of Systemic Functional Grammar which introduced by M.A.K Halliday. The findings of this study showed that 226 of 248 clauses were identified as mood, 98 of 248 clauses expressed modality and 22 of 248 of clauses were identified as minor clause.Further, the distribution of mood types showed that there were three types of mood realized on teacher talk. They were declarative mood (58 %), interrogative mood (17 %), and imperative mood (16 %). Moreover, the distribution of modality showed that 27 of 98 clauses (27 %) were used modal adverb which expressed median value of probability, 16 % of clauses were identified as high obligation (have to, must), then followed by 13 % of clauses were identified as median obligation through the use modal finite of should and need to.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing, regarded as a thinking process enables language learners to explore and transform their ideas into words in accurate and appropriate ways. Although it has been taught from the Elementary school level up to the higher level of education, English teachers and students encounter various challenges. For students, they still get difficulties in writing a text even after being taught. For teachers, correcting students’ writing increases their workload. Therefore, how to reduce the load of teaching writing and to decrease students’ difficulties in writing have become important problem to solve. Through applying a technique in teaching writing, this research aimed to explore whether the application of peer review technique can improve students’ achievement in writing recount text. The method applied in this research was a classroom action research. The subject of the research was X-4 class SMA Negeri 21 Medan. The instruments of collecting the data were writing tasks as quantitative data while observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, diary notes and interview as qualitative data. The finding showed that Peer Review Technique gives contribution to improve students’ achievement in writing recount text. Keywords: Achievement, Writing, Recount Text, Peer Review Technique
