This research aims to identify the potential of medicinal plants in Pampang Village, Samarinda, East Kalimantan, which can be used as a source of chemistry learning at the junior and senior high school levels. This research used a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects, namely 11 residents of Pampang Village, were determined using purposive sampling. Data analysis used interactive model analysis, and data validity is measured using data triangulation techniques. The results of the research show that there are 20 medicinal plants that the people of Pampang Village widely used and eight medicinal plants have the potential to be used as a source of chemistry learning. These medicinal plants were sambung nyawa, meniran, bajakah, betel, seri, turmeric, coconut, and tamarind eggplant. These plants related to materials separating mixtures, reaction rates, functional groups, lipids, acid and base indicators, electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions, acids and bases, chemical changes, and redox. Therefore, this can be used as a reference and consideration for chemistry teachers in the learning process. to help students understand chemistry lessons closely related to everyday life.

Abstract

The chalcone compound is a precursor of flavonoid and pyrazoline compounds. Chalcone has two aromatic rings (A and B) and one ?,?-unsaturated carbon atom. Chalcone compounds can be synthesized via the Claisen Schmidt condensation reaction. Chalcone synthesis uses the basic ingredients of alpha tetralone and benzaldehyde analogues. In this research, chalcone synthesis took place for 48 hours at room temperature. Synthetic materials using ethanol solvent and sodium hydroxide catalyst, as well as basic ingredients alpha tetralone, 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde. Characterization of synthesized compounds using spectroscopic methods, including 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and mass spectroscopy. Characterization results using spectroscopic methods showed that the two chalcone analogue compounds were successfully synthesized with yields above 70%. Both chalcone compounds showed low activity against MCF-7 cancer cells. Molecular docking simulations showed that both chalcone analogues produced energy levels and intramolecular interactions that were no better than 4-hydroxytamoxifen. Abstract

Chemistry learning oriented to local natural resources around students presents real situations that can help students to understand the concepts of learning material being studied. This research aims to identify the chemical concepts involved in the process of palm oil production for developing contextual chemistry learning materials based on local natural resources. This research used descriptive quantitative research. Data were collected from field observation, literature study and documentation study. The relevance of chemical concepts and the context of palm oil processing were assessed by the validators. Based on the finding, there are 3 chemical concepts related to the palm fruit processing into crude palm oil (CPO), namely: classification of matter, change of matter, and separation of mixture. The relationship between both of these three chemical concepts and the context of palm oil processing has been declared highly valid with a score of 3.75 by the validators. Therefore, the processing of palm fruit into CPO can be used as a learning resource for contextual chemistry learning material in the implementation of Merdeka curriculum at phase E.

Abstract

Inclusive education is a promising way to create an equitable and high-quality education system that accepts all learners, including those with special needs. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) offers a flexible and dynamic approach to meet the various needs of learners, helping them to reach their full potential in education. This literature study aims to discover the application of the universal design for learning approach in chemistry learning. The research method used Narrative Literature Review (NLR), which uses the Google Scholar database to search for journal articles from the last ten years. The results of the literature show that applying the Universal Design for Learning approach in chemistry learning has a major influence in improving the learning experience and learning outcomes of students with special needs. Various interesting teaching materials such as learning videos, interactive games, and the application of E-modules are also used to support the learning process.

Abstract

The low collaboration skills of students are due to the less-than-optimal role of the teacher in fostering interpersonal skills and cooperation in the classroom. Selecting an appropriate learning model is key to effectively enhancing students' collaboration skills. Therefore, the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) learning model optimizes students' collaboration skills. This study aims to determine the effect of the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) model on students' collaboration skills in elements, compounds, and mixtures. The approach employed is a quasi-experimental design utilizing a non-equivalent control group format. All 8th-grade junior high school students in Samarinda for the 2023/2024 academic year served as the population in this study. Class VIII A was assigned as the experimental group, whereas Class VIII B was the control group. The sample was selected using purposive sampling based on the subject teacher’s considerations, including classroom participation, group collaboration, and peer interaction. The instrument used was a collaboration skills questionnaire consisting of 25 statement items, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale. Data collection was also carried out using an observation sheet developed based on the indicators of collaboration skills. The data were analyzed descriptively after being collected through observations and collaboration skill questionnaires. The findings indicated that the experimental group achieved a higher average score than the control group, indicating that the CPS model syntax positively improved students' collaboration skills.

Abstract

Ageratum conyzoides L. is a wild plant known to contain secondary metabolites with potential antioxidant activity, such as flavonoids and phenolics. However, the content and activity of active compounds in the leaves of A. conyzoides growing in the Berau region, East Kalimantan, have not been extensively studied. This study aims to evaluate the phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts from A. conyzoides leaves collected from the Batu Putih area, Berau. The samples, in the form of fresh leaves, were dried and ground before being extracted using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as the solvent. The resulting extract was then subjected to phytochemical screening to identify groups of active compounds and tested for antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method, with absorbance measured at a wavelength of 420 nm. Phytochemical screening results indicated the presence of alkaloids, phenolics, and tannins, while flavonoids, terpenoids, and triterpenoids were not detected. The antioxidant assay showed that the extract exhibited strong activity, with an IC50 value of 61.89 ppm, although it was still higher than that of vitamin C, which had an IC50 value of 26.77 ppm. In conclusion, the ethanol extract of A. conyzoides leaves from Batu Putih has potential as a natural antioxidant source and is worthy of further development in the pharmaceutical field.
