Abstract

Early childhood learners require developmentally appropriate strategies to support their sensory growth, particularly in recognizing and categorizing textures through direct experiences. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a sensory play-based instructional module designed to enhance texture recognition skills in early childhood learners. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation), the module was validated by three subject matter experts and implemented in classroom settings. Data were collected through expert validation instruments and teacher assessments to measure its practicality and effectiveness. The module received a validity score of 84.72%, indicating strong content alignment and instructional accuracy. Its practicality was rated at 92.25%, reflecting ease of implementation and contextual relevance, while its effectiveness reached 90.27%, demonstrating improved learner engagement and the ability to distinguish textures through structured sensory activities. These findings confirm the modules high validity, practicality, and effectiveness. Its application offers a valuable instructional strategy for early childhood education by promoting sensory development through evidence-based, play-integrated learning.

Abstract

The development of early childhood language skills requires learning media that are engaging, developmentally appropriate, and capable of actively involving children in meaningful learning experiences. However, classroom practices often rely on limited and less interactive media, which may hinder optimal language development. This study aimed to develop an interactive storybook learning media and examine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing early childhood language abilities, including receptive language, expressive language, and early literacy skills. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the Four-D (4D) model, consisting of define, design, develop, and disseminate stages. The research was conducted at Runiah School Kindergarten in Makassar, involving teachers and children in a limited field trial. Data were collected through observation, documentation, expert validation sheets, teacher response questionnaires, and children’s language development assessments, and were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis and quantitative techniques, including the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results indicate that the interactive storybook media achieved a very high level of validity based on expert evaluation, was categorized as very practical according to teacher responses, and proved effective in significantly improving children’s language abilities, with most children reaching the Developing as Expected category and no longer classified as Not Yet Developed. The findings reveal that interactive storybook media not only enhance language outcomes but also increase children’s engagement, interest in reading, and active participation during learning activities. These results imply that interactive storybook media can serve as an effective and innovative alternative learning resource for early childhood educators, supporting language development while aligning with technological advancements and child-centered learning principles.

Abstract

Abstract

Character education, particularly the value of responsibility, is a crucial foundation for personality formation in early childhood amid digital disruption that risks weakening social interaction and the internalization of local values. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of integrating local cultural values in shaping responsible character and children's socio-emotional skills, while also formulating a conceptual model for this integration. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method guided by PRISMA 2020, the search was conducted in the Scopus database (10 May 2026) using the keywords local wisdom, cultural value, character education, responsibility, and early childhood, yielding 13 selected articles (2023–2026). The findings show that the internalization of local wisdom through traditional games (Dakon, Gobag Sodor, Balinese games), socioculturally adaptive bibliotherapy, and local educational philosophies (the teachings of Ki Hadjar Dewantara, the Kauna character) effectively enhances children's responsibility, cooperation, and emotional regulation when pedagogically mediated in accordance with Vygotsky's sociocultural theory and Lickona's character education model. Three main clusters were identified: (1) curricula based on local wisdom, (2) reconstruction of classroom climate through creative media, and (3) sociocultural determinants and the strengthening of educators' cultural competence. The novelty of this research lies in formulating a conceptual model that integrates local culture with sociocultural theory in a manner responsive to the digital era, with the implication that early childhood education (PAUD) curricula need to combine local wisdom with digital literacy so that the formation of responsible character remains contextual and relevant to the times.
