Abstract

Abstract

Islam and indigenous tradition in Indonesia have long established interconnected relations in both social and ritual practices. This study elaborates on the Islamic construction of the indigenous Bugis-Makassar tradition. The “Haji Bawakaraeng” is one the familiar practice and is believed to exist in the South Sulawesi region. Term Haji Bawakaraeng is a religious practice contained with local Muslim beliefs carried out on Mount Bawakaraeng. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection done through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. This study finds that the Bugis-Makassar habit of carrying out a series of rituals on the summit of Mount Bawakaraeng is an old belief facing the process of negotiation and adaptation to the teachings of Islam. The presence of the term Hajj as an Islamic construction and Bawakaraeng as a local cultural construction is the result of the construction of Islam on the local beliefs of the Buginese-Makassarnese. In addition, this study also illustrates the dynamics of the inclusion of Islam in South Sulawesi as a variative and authentic inclusion. Finally, this study explains the diversity of the Bugis-Makassar people which tends to change from indigenous traditions to religious practices due to the ongoing construction of Islam. This paper recommends the need for further studies on the issue of religious and cultural relations at the micro level to see the dynamics of changing socio-religious practices in the community.

Abstract

Abstract: Ethnic and religious diversity in Indonesia have become not only a wealth but in the same time also a threat to the country. Abstract

The issue of Adat (customary) land management carried out by the government as a ruler of indigenous peoples in the world is not a new thing to be discussed. Many phenomena of Adat land management deviate from human rights. This problem occurs because indigenous peoples still lack knowledge about laws and rights to Adat land. The State has strong control to regulate and take rights over all forms of natural wealth in Indonesia, including land because it is stated in the UUD NKRI 1945, Article 33 point 3 "earth and water and the natural resources contained therein are controlled by the state and used for the greatest prosperity of the people." This paper aims to discuss injustice in Adat land management as the rights of the indigenous peoples in Marafenfen, Aru Islands, Maluku province, which the government seized through one of the government agencies in the field of national defense (TNI-AL). This issue proves that the rights of indigenous peoples to Adat lands are still unfair, especially in Indonesia.

Abstract

Pinisi vessel are cherished local heritage found in South Sulawesi up to the present day. Therefore, this research provided a comprehensive portrayal of songkabala ritual and conducted an in-depth analysis in Bulukumba, Indonesia. In the broader sociological framework, the intricate interplay between the local Bulukumba culture and Islamic law was analyzed. To examine songkabala rituals, theories such as al-'urf, symbolic interactionism, and legal sociology were established. This method presented an understanding of qualitative research, using data sources gathered through systematic observation, insightful interviews, and meticulous documentation. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of selection, formatting, and conclusion. The results showed that songkabala was a ritual preserved for making pinisi vessels in Bulukumba tradition to ward off disasters faced when sailing. The ritual was performed with four stages, including annakbang, kalabiseang annattara, appasili, and ammossi. Based on al-'urf theory, songkabala activities could be accepted as a good tradition for Indonesian Muslim communities because they preserve good local traditions, and not violating fundamental principles in the doctrine of Islamic teachings. The research suggested the need to analyze local traditions with a broad religious perspective, preventing negative justifications and perversion.
