Abstract

Coconut shell charcoal has been widely produced as a raw material for biobriquette production. This cause effect on an increase of coconut shell price as a raw material for charcoal production. Wood waste is one of the easier and cheaper biomass to be obtained than coconut shell. However, the quality of charcoal produced from wood waste need to be compared to be used as a substitute of coconut shell. This study aims to discover the effect of pyrolysis as a carbonisation process on coconut shell, wood waste, and a mixture of both biomass on the quality of charcoal produced including yield, proximate analysis, lignocellulose analysis, and calorific value. A completely randomized design was used in this study by taking into account two influencing factors, including the type of sample (biomass sample and charcoal sample) and the type of biomass (coconut shell, wood waste, and a mixture of both). Pyrolysis was carried out at 550℃ for 120 minutes. Pyrolysis of biomass and different types of biomass have giving effects on the characteristics of the biomass and charcoal produced. The results of the analysis showed that the type of coconut shell biomass and a mixture of the two biomasses produced charcoal that qualified on standards. The results of the analysis concluded that charcoal made from a mixture of coconut shell and wood waste could be a solution to substitute charcoal made from coconut shell only.

Abstract

Guaiene is a derivative compound produced as a byproduct in the production of patchouli alcohol from patchouli oil (Pogostemon cablin Benth.). This study aims to evaluate the antifungal activity of δ-guaiene extracted from patchouli oil originating from Subang against four types of skin pathogenic fungi: Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Microsporum gypseum, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The method used was a laboratory experiment, with the main parameters observed including Inhibition Zone Diameter (IZD), Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC). The results showed that δ-guaiene inhibited the growth of C. albicans at a concentration of 40%, with an IZD of 0.15 mm. Against A. niger, the compound demonstrated an inhibition zone of 1.4 mm at a 20% concentration and had an MFC of 20%. For T. mentagrophytes, an IZD of 0.4 mm was observed, with both MIC and MFC at 20%. Activity against gypseum showed an IZD of 0.25 mm, with MIC and MFC also at 20%. These findings suggest that δ-guaiene from patchouli oil has potential as a candidate antifungal agent derived from local resources, supporting the development of natural bioactive compounds and sustainability.

Abstract

Quality and safe food products are the basic right of every consumer, including food products produced by small and medium industries. Good food production is an important factor in meeting quality standards or food safety licensing requirements. In setting standards, the government also plays an important role in providing direction and assistance to small and medium industries on achieving the specified quality standards. During this time the process is still carried out in a conventional manner directly to the industry. This conventional process is still considered ineffective by seeing the low level of business actors’ knowledge of the standards for Good Food Production Practice (GFPP). So, with this lack of knowledge, business actors’ interest in making food licensing is low. This study designed the application of an expert system that stimulates and provides an illustration for a standards assessment of Good Food Production methods. This research was conducted using Object Oriented Programming (OOP) engineering method for program development and using forward chaining for reasoning methods. This research proved that the application of an expert system for licensing due diligence can function in accordance with standards set by the government.

Abstract

Ensuring food safety and quality has become a global priority, demanding innovative solutions to detect early signs of spoilage or contamination. Intelligent food packaging systems offer a promising approach through real-time monitoring of food quality. Among various sensing materials, carbon dots have emerged as a novel class of fluorescent nanomaterials with exceptional optical properties, high water solubility, low toxicity, and tunable photoluminescence. This review discusses the synthesis strategies of CDs particularly focusing on green synthesis using biomass waste and their photoluminescence mechanisms including quantum confinement, surface state, carbon core state, and molecular state emissions. The application of CDs in smart packaging is highlighted, especially in detecting spoilage indicators such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen, and pH changes. Various studies demonstrate the ability of CDs embedded in biopolymer matrices to produce distinct color changes in response to food spoilage, making them effective visual sensors. These findings support the development of eco-friendly, sensitive, and low-cost nano sensors for next-generation intelligent packaging technologies.

Abstract

Coconut shell is one of the potential biomass resources that has been widely developed as a raw material for briquettes to support renewable energy initiatives and circular economy practices. This study aimed to explore the development, research focus, and future directions of cocomut shell briquette through a systematic literature review. The Methodi Ordinatio approach was employed for analysis, resulting in a final portfolio of 134 selected documents, which were the further examined to identify trends and research gaps. The findings showed that mixturing coconut shell with other biomass such as from wood-based and agricultural-based residues could enhance the briquette performance. Moreover, alternative binders such as lignocellulosic carbohydrate and its derivatives, plant sap, and waste cooking oil offered promising subsitutes for food-based materials. Oily biomass, such as eucalyptus wastes and pine resin, was also found to improve briquette performance due to its volatile content. In addition, the integration of automation technologies based on microcontrolers and the Internet of Things (IoT) began to applied to improve production efficiency and consistency. It is expected that the findings of this study can serve as a foundation for future development focused on material formulation and technological innovations for coconut shell-based briquette production that are more efficient, sustainable, and responsive to future energy needs.
