Abstract

Abstract: This research intends to find out whether or not there is a correlation between students’ subject-verb agreement mastery and their writing ability of descriptive texts at SMAN 2 Tapung. There were 56 tenth grade students of social science major chosen as samples. The instruments were subject-verb agreement test and writing descriptive text test. The subject-verb agreement test was used to assess the students’ mastery of subject-verb agreement. The writing descriptive text test was used to assess descriptive text writing ability. The data were obtained by calculating the subject-verb agreement test and writing descriptive text test results. The calculation was done using SPSS Statistics 25. Based on the calculation, it was found that the students’ subject-verb agreement mastery and their descriptive text writing ability are classified into sufficient category. Besides, the value of correlation coefficient obtained was 0.793 which means that there is a correlation between students’ subject-verb agreement mastery and their writing ability of descriptive texts. The correlation is categorized into high correlation since the value of correlation coefficient obtained is 0.793 which is in the range of 0.70 - 0.90. According to determination analysis, subject-verb agreement mastery had a 62.9% influence on the descriptive text writing ability. From the research findings, it is recommended that the English teacher provide more exercises and strategies to help students grasp the rules of subject-verb agreement easily and the students do and practice more exercises on subject-verb agreement. Further, other researchers conduct further research on the correlation between other language skills and language aspects on different sample size and location were also recommended.Key Words: Correlation, Subject-Verb Agreement Mastery, Writing Ability of Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: Reading is an ability that enables people to acquire information while improving their fluency, vocabulary, and general knowledge. Nonetheless, reading for academic purposes is harder than readers imagine. In the development of reading skills, reading attitude was considered to influence student achievement. This research aims to investigate students' attitudes toward reading English. The research population was the 2018 and 2019 batches of English Department students at FKIP Universitas Riau, with a total sample of 70 students. This research took a quantitative approach, and the research design was a survey design (descriptive analysis). The instrument used to gain the data was an ASRA (Adult Survey of Reading Attitude) questionnaire from Smith (1991), which consisted of 29 items divided into 3 aspects (activity of reading, enjoyment of reading, and anxiety-difficulty). For data analysis, Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 23 were used. The findings revealed that students’ attitudes toward reading were positive, with an average score of 2.60 (SD = 0.83) for reading activity, 2.87 (SD = 0.84) for reading enjoyment, and 2.69 (SD = 0.88) for anxiety-difficulty. The conclusion is that students have a positive attitude toward English reading but still require development in reading activities.Key Words: Attitude, Reading, Reading Attitude, Survey

Abstract

Abstract: Language holds an important role in human life because it is an effective way for contacting purposes in their lives. It is a tool of communication which means that the language itself beings to understand and cannot be separated with human because language is one of the ways for human to communicate to each other. Language is also used to show ideas, feelings, and thoughts to others. This research aims to analyze code collected using an observation sheet regarding to the types of code mixing and video to gather the data in use of code mixing used by the students’ of English study program in their teaching practice video. This research used qualitative research method with descriptive qualitative. The data for this research were the code mixing in the classroom. The subject of the study is the students’ of English study program. After collecting the data, the data were analyzed through some steps namely data reduction, data display based on code mixing categories and conclusion drawing. The result of this research showed that there are two types of code mixing used by the students’ of English study program. The types which occurred in the students’ utterance is intra sentential code mixing (92,7%)and intra lexical code mixing (7,3%). In conclusion, bilingual and multilingual speakers allowed using two languages at a particular time for supporting ideas. For example, an idea cannot be explained in one language, then another language will be need to clarify it.Key Words: Code Mixing, Descriptive Qualitative Method, Teaching Practice Video.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out the correlation between writing essay anxiety and writing ability of the third year English Study Program Students of Universitas Riau. The population of this research was 113 students which divided into 5A, 5B and 5C class as total number of the third year English Study Program Students of Universitas Riau. The researcher used cluster random sampling to choose the sample and 5C class had been chosen as the sample of the research which was made up of 36 students. The researcher used a questionnaire and a test to collect the data. There were 27 items for questionnaire of writing essay anxiety. The second instrument was a writing test. The researcher prepared 3 topics and students chose one topic and wrote an essay for at least 200 words. The result of writing test was checked by 3 raters. The researcher used SPSS to find out the correlation of the research. The result showed that there is a significant correlation between students’ writing anxiety and students’ writing ability of the third-year students of English Study Program by number of 0.717 which is between 0.70 and 0.90. According to Sugiyono (2017) it can be concluded that the students’ writing essay anxiety and students’ writing ability of this research has a strong positive correlation.Key Words: Correlation, Essay, Anxiety

Abstract

Abstract: Speaking is communication occurs when the listener can provide the speaker's response after the listener understands the message conveyed. The objective of this descriptive research was to describe the students’ Speaking Strategies Used by English Study Program, Universitas Riau. The population of this research was the fourth year students of English study program of FKIP Universitas Riau of 2022/2023 academic year. The whole number of the population is about 119 students. Due to the large population which is consisting of 3 classes, the cluster random sampling technique is used. One of the classes is taken as the sample as many as 39 students. This research design used descriptive-quantitative method as the research data approach. There were 20 items in the questionnaire. The adopted from SILL questionnaire (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) version 7.0 is used to collect the data. The questionnaire were collected through Google Form. The collected data were analyzed by using Microsoft excel. The findings of this study revealed that the student tent to use social strategies with average score of 3.90 (classified as high level), In short, it can be inferred that the students’ strategy in speaking English is mostly used is a social strategy. It was very important to practice every day with lowering his anxiety and more cooperating with himself. The suggestion is it would be better if they also can use the other strategies which are appropriate to their tasks, difficulties and learning objectives. Then, hopefully students can improve their English by using more language learning strategies in their learning to help learning easier, and enjoyable.Key Words: Speaking, Language Learning Strategies, English Study Program

Abstract

Abstract : This research was conducted to find out and analyze errors made by students in writing recount text. The method is qualitative descriptive. To describe the errors, the writer classified the errors based on Betty S. Azar’s classification (1989) they are singular plural, word form, word choice, verb tense, add a word, omit a word, word order, incomplete sentence, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, article, meaning not clear, and run on sentence. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Kandis, the population is the first grade students of SMAN 1 Kandis with the total 202 students and the sample was X IPA 2 with 30 students. The instrument in collecting the data were test and interview. The test was writing test in which the students were asked to make recount text based on their unforgettable experience. The texts written by students were analyzed by three raters and the result was triangulated with the result of interview with the English teacher. The interview is about what teacher gets when teaching the same or not. After that, the teacher was asked to make rank about errors from the highest to the lowest errors. The result of the research shows that the highest error is capitalization with the total 158 or 26%. And the lowest is run-on sentence with the total 7 or 1,1 %. Based on the study, students are recommended to improve their understanding about writing by strengthening their knowledge starting from pay attention to all aspects that affect writing and do more practice.Key words: Error Analysis, Recount text, Writing

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out how the perceptions of SMPS As-Shofa students on using Quizizz Application in learning English. The sample of this research was taken by using the total sampling technique that from ninth grade students of SMPS As-Shofa Pekanbaru. The number of samples was 55 students. The data was collected by using a questionnaire. There are 35 questions in total in the questionnaire, specify the type of questionnaire that will be used in this research. To be specific, the pre-defined responses that used in this research are in the type of rating scale: from strongly agree to strongly disagree, with neutral in the middle of the defined responses, although close-ended questionnaire gives limited insight and information, it still can be easily analyzed for quantitative data. The result of this research, SMPS students have the perception that Quizizz helps learn English very well, were feel easy, satisfied, motivated, indicating cognitive and affective results, are a bit challenged and practical in the process of learning English, There are some things that are unsatisfactory such as students still distracted by gadgets, still feeling afraid of English courses, and feeling a little anxious. Based on the study, students are recommended to use Quizizz in learning English in the class because it helps them to engaged in the online quiz in a convenient way in the English class.Key Words: Students’ Perception, Quizizz, Application, English Learning

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out the types of slang words that used by all characters in „Suicide Squad‟ movie. The design of the research was descriptive qualitative research. The data source was the „Suicide Squad‟ movie directed by David Ayer. The movie was released in 2016 and its duration was about 2 hours 17 minutes. The data of this research were the slang words that were found in „Suicide Squad‟ movie. The data were collected by watching, observing, and writing down the slang words found in the movie. To analyze the slang words, this study was applied Allan and Burridge‟s (2006) theory. The results of the analysis showed that 103 data of slang words were found in the „Suicide Squad‟ movie, with Flippant as the most dominant type of slang words that used in „Suicide Squad‟ movie. In conclusion, slang is a common word that used in spoken language for daily life. We need to understand the slang words in order not to get misunderstanding.Key Words: Language, Slang, Movie

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aims to find out the students’ ability level in learning speaking of “SMK Taruna Pekanbaru”. The population of this research was the first year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru in the academic year of 2021/2022. The samples were the students of TBSM consists of 33 students who have been selected using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using speaking test. The speaking tests were analyzed using a speaking assessment by Brown (2004). As a result of the research, it was found that the first year students’ ability level in speaking using complimenting metrial were classified as poor level (53). The first year students’ ability were found in the aspect of the pronunciation (51,2), grammar (53,7), vocabulary (52), fluency (53), and comprehension (55). Thus, in other words, it can be concluded that students’ ability in speaking by the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru were classified into poor level (53).Key Words: Ability, Speaking, Complimenting.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aims to find out the levels of students’ speaking and the dominant type of anxiety that occured in speaking performance of the Third Semester Students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The population of this research was 113 students which divided into 6A, 6B and 6C class as total number of the third year English Study Program Students of Universitas Riau. The researcher used cluster random sampling to choose the sample and 6B class had been chosen as the sample of the research which was made up of 30 students. The researcher used a questionnaire to collect the data containing 3 types of anxiety. There were 30 items for questionnaire of speaking anxiety. The questionnaire was adapted from FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) designed by Horwitz et al (1986). The result of the questionnaire shows that the students’ speaking anxiety is in the anxious level. There were five students (12,82%) in the level of very anxious, twenty-seven students (74,36%) in the level of anxious, five students (12,82%) in the mildly level, zero student (0%) both in relaxed also very relaxed level. It concludes that the highest anxiety scale that occurs in “anxious” caused by test anxiety.Key Words: Speaking, Anxiety, Speaking Anxiety
