Abstract

bstract: Code-switching is a term in linguistics referring to using more than onelanguage or variety in conversation. Code-switching occurs when a speaker alternates between two or more language (bilingualism/multilingualism) or language varieties. The phenomenon of code-switching in Indonesia nowadays is quite easy to find and use by many people, especially in the South Jakarta, as they called the people who use code switching as “Anak Jaksel”. This study analyzes the types and reason of code switching that occurs in a YouTube Podcast of Deddy Corbuzier entitled The Art of Being Poor episode. The research is using a qualitative method, the researcher collecting the data through the utterances of host and source person in the video. The total of 94 data from the whole 69 minutes duration of the video is showing Intra-sentential type is the most showing type, representing 55 times (59%) of the total number of code switching occurences. While the most showing type is Talking about particular topic, representing 42 times (45%) of the total number of code switching occurences. These finding is imperative for educators to comprehend the functions and motivations behind code switching. When being use appropriately, code switching can serve as a valuable tool to enhance student learning and facilitate more effective teaching practices. By broadening their understanding of code switching, students can enrich their knowledge of English and enhance their communication skills.Key Words: Analysis, Code-switching, YouTube Podcast.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to explore the perceptions of English Study Programstudents towards web-based learning for TOEFL instruction at the Universitas Riau.The population of this study consists of second-year students, totaling 117 participants.The researcher used a questionnaire comprising 15 questions to gauge the students'perceptions. The questionnaire included two indicators: implementing and benefits ofweb-based language learning. The results revealed that students' perceptions of TOEFLinstruction via web-based learning were predominantly positive. The overall perceptionpercentage was 77.61%, which is classified as a positive perception. This indicates thatthe majority of students find web-based learning for TOEFL instruction beneficial.Key Words: Perception, Online Learning, TOEFL

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out the perception of the third yearRambah Samo junior high school students toward Whatsapp for English learningmedium. This research uses quantitative method with a survey approach. The sample forthis research included 42 third year SMPN 5, Rambah Samo who experienced in learningEnglish through WhatsApp as learning medium. The instrument of this research was aquestionnaire using a Likert-type scale. Based on the recapitulation of perceptionindicators, it is known that the third year students of SMPN 5 Rambah Samo goodtowards this learning medium. The score obtained is 74.4. They admit that WhatsApp isan interesting learning medium. This can increase their self-confidence, create creativityin thinking, encourage them participate well and bravely in group discussions. On top ofthat, using WhatsApp they can understand the material better. And they admit that, using WhatsApp as a learning medium is time and cost efficiency.Key Words: Perception, WhatsApp, Learning Medium.

Abstract

Abstract: The aims of this research are to identify the types and functions of slang in the film “Don’t Look Up” based on Allan and Burridge theory. This research was conducted by doing a descriptive qualitative method with a content analysis design. The source of this research is taken from the movie and the script of “Don’t Look Up” movie directed by Adam McKay. Based on the research result, there are thirty-four slangs in the movie “Don’t Look Up”. There are five types of slang in the theory of Allan and Burridge, however, only four types were found in the movie. Those are fresh and creative, imitative, flippant, and acronyms. For the functions of slang, there were seven functions of slang based on Allan and Burridge theory. However, only six functions of slang that were found in the movie are as follows to address, to humiliate, to initiate a relaxed conversation, to communicate impression, to reveal anger, and to show intimacy.Key Words: sociolinguistics, slang, movie

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the types and reasons for using slangwords by the characters in the “The Holdovers” movie script. The research design usedin this study is descriptive qualitative research with document analysis as the researchtype. The source of the data was taken from the script of “The Holdovers” moviewritten by David Hemingson. Allan and Burridge's (2006) theory was used to analyzethe data in this research. The finding shows that 96 data of slang words were found withFresh and Creative types as the most dominant type of slang words used by thecharacters in this movie, Then followed the Flippant type, Imitative type, Clipping type,and lastly the acronym type. Meanwhile, out of 192 frequencies of utterances, it wasfound that To Reveal Anger was the most frequently used reason for using slang wordsin “The Holdovers” movie script. It is followed by To Address, To Express Impression,To Humiliate, To Initiate Relax Conversation, To Form Intimate Atmosphere, and lastlyTo Show Intimacy.Key Words: Slang Words, Movie Script, The Holdovers

Abstract

Abstract: Textbooks are an essential component of the educational system because they fulfill so many functions. For students, they not only provide as the corpus of knowledge on their grade level, but they also give their learning structure and reinforcement through their organization and illustration (Miller & Berry, 1962). the use of printed books in learning, especially learning English, has several opinions. Books can help teachers explain material according to lesson plans and also help students understand the lessons which delivered by the teacher. This study is looking forward to the students of As-Shofa Junior High School perception’s towards the use of textbook for English learning. The researcher choose descriptive method as design method to collect the data from the students’ perception. The results of the questionnaireadministered to second-year students of As-Shofa Junior High School regarding the use of textbooks for English learning can be categorized as Positive Perception. Out of the total 26 respondents, the questionnaire yielded a percentage of 75.19 out of 100 available points. The highest score is observed in item number 12, addressing whether the English textbook suits students' level due to clear instructions for the grammar and vocabulary parts. This item obtained a score of 117 out of 130 points available, with a percentage of 90%. Conversely, the lowest scoreis attributed to item number 14, concerning the ease of completing exercises in the English textbook with teacher explanation. This item received a score of 53 out of 130 points available, translating to a percentage of 40.77%. This research also finds the teacher to attentively consider and integrate the feedback provided by students into their teaching practices. Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out how many test items of HOTS in summative tests are prepared by teachers of SMK TELKOM Pekanbaru. The object of this study was the odd and even semester of summative test items of grade X students for the 2022/2023 school year. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The data was gathered through a documentation study, namely the document in the form of a School Examination question sheet. The data were analyzed and categorized based on the C1-C6 thinking level, and then calculated the percentage of questions with the HOTS category based on the formula according to Ali (2013: 201) using Microsoft Excel. The result of the study revealed that there were 43 questions or 45.55%, with details of 22 questions in the odd semester or 48.88% which included C4 (analyze) questions totaling 15 questions, C5 (evaluate) totaling 5 questions, and C6 (create) totaling 2 questions. In the even semester summative test there were 19 questions or 42.22% which included C4 (analyze) questions totaling 13 questions, C5 (evaluate) totaling 4 questions, and C6 (create) totaling 2 question. Abstract

Abstract: The method each student chooses to pay attention to, receive, andretain new information is known as learning style. The student's learning style is one ofthe aspects that will influence the student's performance in learning activities. Thepurpose of this study is to ascertain the learning style preferences of EnglishDepartment students at Universitas Riau. The participants in this study were fortyEnglish Study Program four-semester students. The research data was collected usingReid's (1987) Perceptual Learning Style Preferences (PLSP). Descriptive statistics wereused to analyze the quantitative data, which was collected using Perceptual LearningStyle Preferences Questionnaire (PLSPQ). The results showed that the four- semesterEnglish Study Program students of FKIP Universitas Riau had a variety of learningstyles, with visual, auditory and individual learning style being the preferred followedwith tactile, kinesthetic and group learning style being the least preferred.Key Words: Learning Style, Perceptual Learning Style Preferences, English Students.

Abstract

This research is entitled "commissive speech acts in President Anwar Saddat's speech during the 1973 Yom Kippur War". The main problem in this study is to find out what commissive speech acts were expressed by Anwar Saddat in his speech during the 1973 Yom Kippur War where Anwar Saddat allegedly did not fulfill his promise in the future at that time so he was killed. The purpose of this study is to find the function and strategy of commissive speech acts in President Anwar Saddat's speech during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe in detail and in depth through observing data on the object of Egyptian President Anwar Saddat's speech during the 1973 Youm Kippur war. Data collection techniques using the method of free-involved viewing and note-taking methods. The results of this study are commissive speech acts totaling 30 sentences, namely the function of promising 16 sentences, the function of swearing 7 sentences, and the function of offering 7 sentences, while the speech act strategy using direct sentences totals 23 sentences, all of which are contained in sentences with functions of promises and swearing. while the speech act strategy using indirect sentences totaled 7 where all indirect sentences were stated in sentences with the function of offering. Abstract

penelitian ini dibuat dengan rumusan masalah bagaimana budaya masyarakat Jawa dalam memilih pemimpin, serta bagaimana hubungan budaya Jawa dan perilaku warga desa Tanjung Mas Kecamatan Buay Madang Timur Kabupaten OKU Timur. Pada penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kualitatif, yang mana pada jenis penelitian ini digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan gambaran pada permasalahan yang ada di lokasi penelitian untuk menjawab rumusan masalah, kemudian teknik penelitian menggunakan cara observasi, wawancara yang dilakukan kepada masyarakat desa Tanjung Mas untuk mendapatkan informasi dan dokumentasi yang dilakukan di kantor desa Tanjung Mas yang digunakan untuk data tambahan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa hubungan budaya Jawa dan Perilaku Politik warga desa Tanjung Mas saling berhubungan,hal ini dibuktikan dengan masih terjaga dan diterapkannya tradisi suku Jawa didesa Tanjung Mas dan kekerabatan yang erat menjadi salah satu segi yang dilihat dalam memilih seorang pemimpin yang secara teori perilaku memilih terdapat dalam pendekatan sosiologis, yang mana dalam pendekatan ini dalam memilih seorang pemimpin atau kandikat melihat dari segi suku, keluarga (kekerabatan), agama, etnis dan ekonomi
