Abstract

Smartphone addiction has increasingly emerged as a significant concern among college students. This study aims to investigate the impact of self-esteem and self-control on smartphone addiction within this demographic. Adopting a survey design with a correlational approach, the study involved 130 students selected using convenience sampling. The researchers employed the Smartphone Addiction Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Self-Control Scale for data collection. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the variables, followed by hypothesis testing through simple and multiple regression analyses. The results indicate that both self-esteem and self-control negatively affect smartphone addiction, both independently and collectively. Specifically, higher levels of self-esteem and self-control are associated with lower levels of smartphone addiction among participants. This study provides a novel contribution by examining the combined effects of self-esteem and self-control, offering new insights into the roles of these psychological factors in predicting smartphone addiction among Indonesian university students. These findings have significant implications for addressing smartphone addiction through interventions that enhance self-esteem and self-control.

Abstract

Academic adjustment is essential for first-year students to navigate the learning process smoothly. However, multiple prior studies have highlighted academic adjustment as a commonly encountered challenge. This study investigates the impact of optimism and self-esteem on the academic adjustment of novice students. Employing a quantitative survey method, 155 respondents were selected through convenience sampling. Data collection utilized the brief versions of the Personal Optimism Scale, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, and Academic Adjustment Scale. Linear regression was applied to test the formulated hypotheses. The outcomes indicated that both optimism and self-esteem exerted significant partial effects on academic adjustment. Concurrent testing further confirmed their combined influence on academic adjustment. These results lay a robust foundation for intervention development through guidance and counseling services aimed at enhancing optimism and self-esteem levels among first-year students to bolster their academic adjustment.

Abstract

Intercultural communication represents a significant challenge in the adaptation process for students studying outside their home regions. This study aims to examine the impact of studying abroad on the development of students' intercultural communication skills. A qualitative approach, utilizing a case study design, was employed for this research. The study involved four students who were currently studying abroad, selected through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather insights from each participant. The analysis revealed four key themes: personality resilience, communication skills, psychological adaptation, and cultural awareness. The findings suggest that psychological resilience plays a crucial role in facilitating effective intercultural communication. Additionally, interpersonal communication skills are essential in this process. A common psychological challenge faced by students is homesickness, which can be mitigated by maintaining regular communication with family members. Studying abroad also enhances students' awareness of Indonesia's cultural diversity, prompting them to expand their understanding of different cultures, values, environments, and norms. This study underscores the importance of strengthening guidance and counseling services in higher education to support students' adaptation to new environments.

Abstract

Parents with children having disabilities face heightened parenting challenges, rendering them susceptible to stress. This study aims to analyze the experiences of parents with disabled children, focusing on parenting stress, coping mechanisms, and social support. The study included 3 parents selected through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to elicit information from each participant. The analysis revealed three main themes: coping with stress, social support, and parenting stress. Findings indicate that parents of children with disabilities experience stress due to their circumstances, particularly concerning stressors like medical services, education, emotional support, and societal stigma. Moreover, their concerns about their children's future pose a challenging aspect to control. Strategies to manage their stress include concentrating on emotional regulation, problem-solving techniques, and acceptance of their situation, although a minority of participants resort to avoidance strategies. Spousal social support significantly aids them in problem resolution, with some participants highlighting support from other sources as beneficial. The study underscores the importance of enhancing counseling services within communities to assist parents of disabled children in navigating parenting challenges effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effectiveness of Forgiveness Therapy in reducing the emotional pain of bullying in college students. This case study involved client "DL", a 21-year-old student who experienced bullying during Campus Orientation activities. Data were collected through Forgiveness Therapy sessions and analyzed using the Forgiveness Therapy Outcome Assessment. The results showed that the client experienced deep trauma, social anxiety, and depression due to bullying, but after undergoing Forgiveness Therapy, the client felt relief and calmness, and was free from excessive anxiety. This suggests the potential of Forgiveness Therapy in helping bullying victims recover from trauma. Abstract

Learning satisfaction is a crucial element that students must achieve, as it significantly affects the success of the learning process. This study aims to analyze the effect of students' perceptions of lecturers' pedagogic competence on their learning satisfaction. An online survey research design was employed. Over approximately two months, 154 students from the Islamic Education Study Program at a higher education institution in Jambi Province participated, completing scales measuring perceptions of lecturers' pedagogic competence and learning satisfaction. Data analysis in this study utilized descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The findings indicate high student perceptions of lecturers' pedagogic competence and learning satisfaction. Regression analysis confirms a significant positive effect of students' perceptions of lecturers' pedagogic competence on learning satisfaction. If students perceive that the lecturer possesses good teaching abilities, can communicate the material clearly, and responds to students' learning needs, then it is highly likely that students will be satisfied with the learning process. This research has important implications for improving the quality of higher education learning. Lecturers should plan and design effective learning experiences, including selecting materials, teaching methods, and appropriate resources. Furthermore, the ability to utilize technology in teaching is increasingly important in today's digital era.

Abstract

Public speaking anxiety is a prevalent issue among students. This study aims to explore the prevalence of public speaking anxiety and self-efficacy among students. Additionally, researchers examined the impact of self-efficacy on public speaking anxiety. Employing a quantitative survey method, this study included 109 students selected through convenience sampling. Hypothesis testing was conducted using simple linear regression. Descriptive analysis revealed that public speaking anxiety was rated in the low category, while self-efficacy was in the medium category. Results from hypothesis testing demonstrated a significant negative relationship between self-efficacy and student anxiety during public speaking. This suggests that higher levels of self-efficacy correlate with reduced communication anxiety, and conversely. The implications of this study are vital for addressing and managing public speaking anxiety among students in higher education institutions through guidance and counseling services. Counselors can develop specific interventions to enhance students' self-efficacy, enabling them to better manage and effectively overcome public speaking anxiety
