Abstract

This study aims to analyze the socioeconomic and demographic conditions of Indonesian migrant workers in Donomulyo District and identify the factors influencing their decision to migrate. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, the research was conducted in Donomulyo District, Malang Regency, with a population of 722 individuals whose family members work as migrant workers. A sample of 88 respondents was determined using the Slovin formula and proportional random sampling. Data were collected through field observations and interviews, processed using single and cross-tabulations, and analyzed with inferential statistics, specifically the Chi-Square test. The results show that migrant workers in Donomulyo District predominantly have a junior high school education, are married, and support an average of three dependents. Before migration, most were engaged in agriculture, either as laborers or self-employed, earning between IDR 1,500,000 and IDR 2,000,000, with an average land ownership of 0.09-0.2 hectares. Among the variables studied, the most significant factor influencing migration decisions was their previous occupation in agriculture. These findings highlight the socioeconomic challenges faced by rural communities and their influence on migration patterns, providing insights for policymakers in addressing migration-related issues.

Abstract

This research was used to analyze, understand and identify the relationship between the human development index and the percentage of poverty in East Java in 2023, the period of economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. Poverty is a complex problem related to population, economics, social and culture. East Java is the third poorest province on the island of Java, with a poverty rate of 10.35% as of March 2023. Sampang City is the city with the highest poverty rate, namely 21.76%. The simple correlation method is used to analyze the relationship between two variables and also measure the strength and direction of influence of the variables used so that it can be identified how big the relationship between variables is statistically. The variables used are the human development index value for one year (2023) and the poverty percentage variable in 2023. The results of decision making after processing the data, it can be concluded that the HDI results have a relationship with the poverty percentage of East Java in 2023 with a correlation value amounting to 0.810 which is included in the strong correlation category so that the research hypothesis can be accepted. The correlation in the research has a negative direction. Negative correlation means that an increase in the HDI variable is accompanied by a decrease in the percentage of poverty, and vice versa.

Abstract

Perseroan Terbatas Perkebunan Nusantara PTPN XII Bantaran administers an afdeeling (a Dutch post-colonial administrative area) focused on one specific business expansion, Agritourism Sirah Kencong. The agritourism area is an excellent destination where a tea plantation landscape stretches up to 55.28 Ha. This tourism object is located 1,179 meters above  sea level and is a hydrological footing area. The current research is aimed to: 1) analyze the capacity of the environmental carrying capacity of Agritourism Sirah Kencong; 2) analyze the correlation of environmental sustainability of Agritourism Sirah Kencong; 3) scrutinize the associations between environmental carrying capacity and environmental sustainability in Agritourism Sirah Kencong. Results uncovered that: physical carrying capacity (PCC) contributed to as many as 11,091 tourists per day; real carrying capacity (RCC) 220 per day; and effective carrying capacity (ECC) 174 per day. Following with the assessment, the carrying capacity of Agritourism Sirah Kencong showed similar carrying capacity levels, indicating PCC>RCC>ECC, which means that the board of administrators could still work on ameliorating the number of tourists until the stipulated score limit. However, the maximum number of tourists had ever reached a total of 5,027, which exceeded the limit number of real carrying capacity (RCC) and effective carrying capacity (ECC). In addition, the environmental sustainability of Agritourism Sirah Kencong was assessed based on several indicators, including cleanliness, health, safety, and environmental sustainability (CHSE), and obtained satisfactory recommendation from the certification audit team for CHSE of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (KEMENPAREKRAF). Furthermore, the research  revealed that environmental carrying capacity and sustainability were closely interlinked to ecotourism as it required the tourists’ support for the actualization of sustainable tourism. Keywords: environmental carrying capacity, environmental sustainability, sustainable tourism

Abstract

This study aims to examine the strategies and actions of the people of Bawean Island in meeting food needs during the COVID-19 pandemic by using Max Weber’s theory of action. Extracting information was carried out using participatory observation techniques and in-depth interviews and was supported by documentation and analysis using inductive use. The results showed that there were two strategies and actions, namely: saving on food needs and limiting household expenses. Saving on food needs is done by changing the consumption pattern of side dishes. People are looking for replacement side dishes, for example; People who are accustomed to consuming fresh sea fish for a week in a row, have started to replace them with tofu, tempeh and rencek fish. The savings were made because during the pandemic, the traffic flow from Bawean Island to Java (Gresik) was not smooth, causing foodstuffs to increase in price and scarcity. Restrictions on household expenditure are carried out by reducing household spending and only focusing on spending on food, health, electricity and fuel oil needs. These two strategies can save household food and shopping needs, before the pandemic it was usually IDR 150,000 to IDR 70,000-80,000 per day. Furthermore, the actions taken by the people of Bawean Island, namely continuing to work at the main job and working side jobs to increase income. People who choose to keep working in the main job feel that they cannot do anything other than survive in this job, this is done by many furniture traders and entrepreneurs who in the end, because there are no customers, are forced to use their savings for their daily needs. People who choose to work side by side are more based because they do not have savings funds and have to increase their income, the people who work a lot on the side in this research are the fishermen.
