Abstract

Clays are soft soil which have a low bearing capacity and potentially to failure. Utilization of additive material is an one way that can be applied to stabilize the clay. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of using POFA which is a local available material as an one alternative in stabilizing the clay by increasing its bearing capacity. The research focused on the influence of the POFA percentage with CBR value and the value of Cu in the clay stabilization. The results showed that the increasing of POFA percentage and curing process resulted in the increasing CBR and Cu values.  The average increase in the value of CBR curing method 1 to CBR without curing by 0,07% at the top and the bottom of the CBR. whereas for the curing method 2 by 2,29% at the top of CBR and 2,41% at the bottom of CBR. For cu values, the average increase by 1,10 kPa for curing method 1, and 14.65 kPa for curing method 2. It shows an increase in the value of the bearing capacity of the clay.  Key Words: CBR value, cu value, clay, POFA.

Abstract

Bearing capacity of Helical Pile on peat soil can be obtained from cone penetration test (CPT). Bearing capacity based on CPT data is calculated by Bustamante & Gianeselli (LCPC) method, Schmertmann method, method Meyerhoff, Price & Wardle method, and Tumay & Fakhroo method. Meanwhile, there are two methods based on peat soil mechanisms to determine the bearing capacity of the helical pile such a cylindrical shear method and individual bearing method. This research evaluates bearing capacity of the five methods above by implementing two basic methods helical pile on peat soil that most closely to the actual bearing capacity. The results showed that the method Bustamante & Gianeselli (LCPC) to provide bearing capacity that most closely to the actual bearing capacity compared to other methods. Reduction factor is also necessary to modify bearing capacity the foundation Helical. After reduced, bearing capacity of each method has decreased significantly and tends to approach the actual bearing capacity. Keywords: Cone Penetration Test, Helical Foundation, Peat, Capability, Reduction Factor.

Abstract

Soft soil is one of the soil type with low bearing capacity. Generally the problem that arises in the construction on soft soil is sliding. An attempt to improve low shear resistivity of soft soil can be accomplished through soil reinforcement methods. One of the method is by using wooden pile as foundation. Wooden pile can be resembled as a shortpile, one of a foundation type that widely used in soft soil layer especially to bear a large amount load. This research was conducted through laboratory scale model approach method, but the behavior was made to resemble actual behavior in the field. Wooden pile type that will be used in this research is Mahang Wood and will be installed on peat soil and silt soil. Variations of installed wooden pile are 1 pile, 4 pile, and 9 pile with each pile divided into pile with bark and pile without bark. It is also varied with installation of piles for 1 day and 7 day. It is hoped that such small-scale behavior will result in additional theories of reinforcement in soft soil. The result of this research is the increasing of soil bearing capacity along with the addition of pile number. The bark of the wood pile also affects the bearing capacity. Increased bearing capacity occurs from 1 day to 7 day installation. Keywords : bearing capacity, wooden pile, soft soil, peat, silt

Abstract

POFA is an agrowaste ash which is produced from fibers, nut shells, and empty fruit bunches when burnt at temperatures of about 800-10000C in boiler. The production of POFA is rising every year, it is disposed for landfills, now become an important environmental disposal issue. A large area is required for the disposal of these POFA waste materials. The landfill of POFA is the problem for the palm oil industry when it is not reused for any work. POFA contains a large amount of silicon dioxide with high pozzolanic reactivity and has high potential to be used in any engineering work. This research examined POFA characteristics in geotechnical application and its influence by curing periods on 0, 7 and 28 days. In this paper, physical and mechanical characteristics of POFA in geotechnical work will be shown. The chemical composition of POFA prove the existence of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and CaO as important substances supporting pozzolan reaction during cured. The result shows that the characteristic of POFA has similar behaviour with sands. Coefficient of permeability decreased during curing periods. Besides, cohesion shear strength, angle of friction, cohesion undrained, and CBR value are improve during curing periods.    Keywords:  POFA, geotechnic, pozzolan reaction

Abstract

Group of columns that inserted in the soft soil will increase shear strength and density of the soil, reduce soil settlement and liquefaction potential, and increase bearing capacity ofthe soil. Things that must be considered in columns design are diameter, length, space, and pattern of the columns group. This study aims to see the effect of diameter and columnspacing on bearing capacity of peat. Variation of diameter that used in this study are 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5,5 cm. Variation of space that used in this study are 1,25D, 1,5D, and 1,75D.The results of laboratory testing indicate that increasing the diameter dan decreasing the space between columns will increase bearing capacity of stabilized peat. Maximumbearing capacity given by 5,5 cm diameter and 1,25D space variation. The increasing of bearing capacity reaches 74,49%. The results of theoretical analysis give different tendency.Increasing of diameter dan space between columns will increase bearing capacity of the stabilized peat. This tendency difference is due to the influence of overlap between soils withinthe unit cell due to the very close space of the column. Keywords : stone column, diameter, space, bearing capacity

Abstract

Ground improvement by using reinforcement developed rapidly in recent decades. Since it was first introduced by Vidal (1966), this method is suitable to reduced the deformation of both lateral and vertical deformation. Clay materials used because of its availabilityand lower cost, clay have shown good performance as embankment, and for the reinforcement material using 10 mm steel bar. This laboratory-scale test prepared at two dry side water content, two wet side water content and optimum water content (OMC), while the pullout resistance from longitudinal reinforcement. Pullout resistance reinforcement would be highest when the water content of clay are in optimum condition, adhesi is the dominant force in this pullout resistance test. Abstract

Helical piles are a type of foundation that come with helical plate in certain number and space. The research will present the results of loading test using constant rate penetration method conducted on peat soil. Data obtained from the test are load and settlement which then interpreted using both terzaghi and method and tangent intersection method. The result shows no proportional correlation between the load capacity of helical pile withsimilar diameter and the increase of helical plate distance. The bearing capacity of helical pile is influenced by the ratio between the space and the diameter of the plate. The aforementioned load tests are compared with the result of bearing capacity calculationusing individual bearing and cylindrical shear method. It is obtained from the result that the bearing capacity of helical foundation is closer to the behaviour of bearing capacityobtained from cylindrical shear method with 0.633 standard of error while the bearing capacity of individual bearing method is close to the result of standard load test with .637 standard of error.Keyword : helical foundation, peat soil, individual bearing, cylindrical shear.
