Abstract

Upland rice productivity in Kampar has decreased due to inappropriate planting time with rainfall. Plant water needs will not be met during the dry season and are at risk of crop failure. This study aims to determine the level of availability of groundwater based on land water balance analysis and determine the planting time of upland rice. The method used in this research was a survey method. Soil data of bulk density, field capacity water content, permanent wilting point moisture content, soil texture, and C-organic content were obtained with ring and composite soil samples. Soil sampling points were determined based on the results of overlaying the soil map and land use map using GIS techniques. Climate data for the period 1990–2019 was obtained from the Sumatra River Region III Center. Analysis of land water balance was carried out using the Thornthwaite-Matter method. The results showed that Kampar Regency was classified as a wet area with an annual rainfall of 2,508 mm (Oldemann D1). Soil water content was classified as a sufficient criterion every month, except for June–August. The planting of upland rice at SLH 1–SLH 7 (inpago variety) can be done in January, May, and September, while at SLH 8, it is done in January and September. Planting using local varieties at SLH 1–SLH 7 can be done in February and September, while at SLH 8, it is done in March and September. Alternatif planting can also be done by planting inpago varieties in February and local varieties in September.

Abstract

Abstract

Using plantation crop residues in the form of oil palm fronds and coconut shells has the potential as a soil ameliorant material such as Biochar. Using Biochar as an ameliorant can improve soil fertility, one of which is peaty soil with a very acidic pH. The research aims to analyze the basic characterization of Biochar palm fronds and coconut shells on the physical properties of peaty soil. Palm fronds and coconut shells were pyrolyzed using a simple combustion device in the form of a pyrolysis drum. Combustion with pyrolysis drums is carried out in a closed manner in the absence of oxygen for 2-5 hours. Parameters observed were lignocellulose of palm fronds and coconut shells, spectrographs, chemical properties of Biochar of palm fronds and coconut shells, and physical properties of peaty soil after applying Biochar of palm fronds and coconut shells. The pH, total C, total N, C/N, total P, available P, total K, total Na, and the volume and pore size of the coconut shell biochar showed higher results than the palm frond biochar. However, the results of the analysis of total Mg, total Ca, CEC and ash content and surface area on palm frond biochar showed higher results than coconut shell biochar. The moisture content and BD values of peaty soil in applying coconut shell Biochar showed the best results compared to palm frond biochar.

Abstract

The paddy production is decreasing due to land characteristics that are not suitable for its crop requirements. This study aims to identify the inhibiting factors of growth and production and evaluate land suitability based on the factors that inhibit growth and production of tidal paddy fields. The research method used is a soil survey. Soil sampling points were determined based on the overlay results of the current paddy field map and the map of land and soil units. The suitability assessment of paddy fields is carried out using a matching system in actual and potential conditions. The actual land suitability of all SLH is not current suitable (N1) with a very high Fe inhibiting factor. Limiting factors of Fe content can be overcome by making one-way drainage channels, adding organic matter, liming, fertilizing and or using tolerant varieties. The potential land suitability of all SLH is marginally suitable (S3).

Abstract

The community of Sialang Sakti predominantly works as oil palm farmers. Oil palm cultivation produces biomass, one of which is palm fronds. If palm fronds are not managed properly, they can lead to detrimental effects. Piles of palm fronds can become breeding grounds for pests and diseases that may disrupt surrounding palm plants. The biomass from palm fronds can be processed into vermicompost, but this is not widely known among oil palm farmers. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct socialization regarding the processing of palm fronds into vermicompost. The socialization with the community and Gapoktan Manunggal Sakti took place at the Gapoktan Manunggal Sakti warehouse in Sialang Sakti Village, Siak Regency, Riau Province. By utilizing palm frond biomass, the community was taught how to make vermicompost, supporting sustainable farming practices and biomass utilization. This activity involved community members and Gapoktan Manunggal Sakti, using materials such as palm frond biomass, Lumbricus rubellus worms, cow manure, and sawdust. The outcome of this activity is that participants can identify potential resources, such as palm fronds and other organic waste, to process into vermicompost, which can enhance soil quality and crop productivity. It is hoped that with this training, the people of Sialang Sakti Village can adopt the use of more environmentally friendly organic fertilizers for sustainable agriculture.
