Abstract

Depression is a prevalent concern among the elderly population, potentially leading to suicidal ideation and behavior. Consequently, proactive measures are imperative to mitigate depression's impact. Community cadres, who offer voluntary assistance to healthcare professionals, play a crucial role in the early detection of depression. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a training program designed for cadres in identifying depression among elderly individuals residing in rural areas. This study utilized purposive random sampling to employ a pre-experimental design with a single-group pre-post intervention. 89 participants meeting the inclusion criteria—being mental health cadres and having completed comprehensive training—were randomly assigned. The intervention involved training participants in recognizing depression symptoms in the elderly. Data was collected using a personal information form and a questionnaire assessing the ability to detect early signs of depression in the elderly, administered before and after the intervention. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS-22, employing paired t-tests and Chi-square tests. The findings indicate a significant improvement in the cadres' ability to identify depression among rural elderly individuals following the intervention (p = 0.005). This study underscores the effectiveness of training programs in enhancing cadres' proficiency in recognizing depression among elderly rural residents. Consequently, we advocate for integrating regular mental health training sessions for community cadres within public health initiatives.

Abstract

Introduction: Older adults are prone to decreased psychological well-being due to biological, social, and emotional changes. Non-pharmacological interventions offer alternative approaches to improving mental health in older adults. Methods: This systematic review analysed nine RCTs of intervention studies published between 2022–2024. The study evaluated the effectiveness of various interventions such as mindfulness, reminiscence therapy, virtual reality, and community social support. Results: Most studies (n = 9) eported improvements in psychological well-being, spirituality, and quality of life, as well as a decrease in symptoms of depression and anxiety. Community-based and self-reflective interventions such as life story reviews and Mindfulness-Based Elder Care (MBEC) howed significant results. Social support and psychological empowerment have proven to be important mediators of intervention success. Conclusions: Non-pharmacological interventions have great potential in improving the well-being of older adults. Further comprehensive and ongoing research is needed to ensure long-term effectiveness. Keywords: awareness; memory therapy; non-pharmacological interventions; psychological well-being; social support.

Abstract

Aims: This study aims to qualitatively explore the positive experiences of caregivers for people with dementia (PwD. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological design was employed with purposive sampling. This study was conducted in Indonesia by the Alzheimer’s Indonesia organization. Participants were selected using purposive sampling methods. The study involved 11 caregivers, including paid caregivers and family members, including children, grandchildren, spouses, siblings, and other close relatives, who had provided care for at least one year. Data were collected through in-depth interviews conducted face-to-face or via Zoom in 2022. Colaizzi’s method guided the data analysis to extract significant statements, formulate their meanings, and identify emerging themes. Rigor was ensured through data triangulation, peer checking, and participant validation. Results: The study identified four main themes reflecting the positive experiences of caregivers of persons with dementia: (1) Personal Growth and Development, including increased patience, empathy, and caregiving competence; (2) improved relationships and connections, characterized by stronger emotional bonds and supportive family dynamics; (3) Search for Meaning and Role Satisfaction, where caregiving was seen as a purposeful, spiritually meaningful role; and (4) Positive Psychological Outcomes, such as reduced stress, greater emotional resilience, and enhanced well-being. Conclusion: Despite the challenges, caregiving for individuals with dementia can lead to personal growth, stronger relationships, a sense of meaning, and emotional resilience. These positive experiences highlight the importance of supporting caregivers and recognizing their strengths.
