Abstract

This study aims to synthesize and characterize copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) through a simple practical method that is suitable for application in educational laboratories. The synthesis was carried out through a neutralization reaction between copper(II) oxide (CuO) and dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4 2M), followed by heating at a temperature of ±70°C, gravity filtration, temperature crystallization using ice cubes, and drying at room temperature. Characterization was carried out visually on the color and shape of the crystals formed. The synthesis results in a characteristic blue crystal with an actual mass of 0.73 grams. The yield calculation using Mr CuSO4·5H2O (249.5 g/mol) resulted in a yield of 11.7%. The relatively low yield is influenced by the small reaction scale, product loss during the process, and suboptimal crystallization conditions. his method can be an alternative for undergraduate educational practicums, although optimization of reaction conditions is still needed.

Abstract

This study aims to synthesize and characterize the complex compound [Cu(H2O)2(NH3)4]SO4 through ligand substitution reaction between CuSO4·5H2O and ammonia solution in the context of coordination chemistry learning. The research problem is focused on the mechanism of complex formation, color changes as an indicator of the formation of coordination compounds, synthesis efficiency based on yield values, and confirmation of the presence of complex constituent ions. Laboratory experimental methods were carried out through complex formation, crystallization, separation, and drying of crystals, as well as classical characterization using solubility tests and chemical reactions with HCl, NaOH, and BaCl₂. The results showed a change in the color of the solution from light blue to deep dark blue which indicates the formation of the complex [Cu(H₂O)₂(NH₃)₄]²⁺ due to the substitution of water ligands by ammonia. Dark blue crystals were successfully obtained with a yield of 91.46% which indicates high synthesis efficiency. Characterization tests confirmed the presence of NH₃ ligands, Cu²⁺ ions, and SO₄²⁻ ions as constituents of the complex. These findings are consistent with valence bond theory and crystal field theory in explaining changes in the coordination structure and optical properties of the complex, making this procedure a potential alternative for simple laboratory experiments in coordination chemistry.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and scientific literacy are important competencies for students in learning chemistry, especially on abstract topics such as chemical bonding. This study aims to determine the effect of the Discovery Learning model assisted by interactive Genially media on students’ HOTS scientific literacy skills. The study was conducted on 10th grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Percut Sei Tuan on the topic of chemical bonding. This research employed a quantitative pre-experimental method using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 30 students selected through random sampling techniques. Data were collected using pre-test and posttest instruments designed to measure students’ HOTS scientific literacy skills before and after the implementation of the Discovery Learning model with Genially media. Data analysis included normality tests, paired sample t-tests (right-tail), and N-Gain analysis. The results showed that the average score increased from 34.4 in the pre-test to 59.8 in the post-test. The paired sample t-test produced a significance value of 0.002 (p < 0.05), indicating that the treatment had a significant effect on students’ HOTS scientific literacy skills. In addition, the N-Gain score of 0.34 indicated a moderate level of improvement. In conclusion, the Discovery Learning model assisted by interactive Genially media is effective in improving students’ HOTS scientific literacy skills on chemical bonding.

Abstract

Implementasi Metode Reading to Learn (R2L) dan Pembuatan Rangkuman untukMeningkatkan Kemampuan HOTs-Literacy Sains Siswa pada Materi Hidrokarbon.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penerapan metode Reading to Learn danpembuatan rangkuman terhadap kemampuan HOTs-Literacy Sains Siswa pada materihidrokabon. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMA Negeri 1 TanjungBeringin yang berjumlah 6 kelas. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan PurposiveSampling, dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI-A1.1 yang berjumlah 34 orang. Penelitianini menggunakan instrument tes sebanyak 12 butir soal yang terdiri dari essai, pilihan ganda,dan benar-salah. Berdasarkan pengolahan data diperoleh rata-rata nilai kemampuan HOTs-Literacy sains siswa sebesar 83,14 ± 4.98. Sebaran kemampuan awal siswa masih beradadibawah nilai KKM dengan katagori rendah &gt;55 dan mengalami peningkatan pada sebarankemampuan akhir dengan rentang nilai 77-91. Uji hipotesis menggunakan model Regresi LinierBerganda dengan hasil penelitian diperoleh nilai sig 0,01 &lt; �� (0,05) artinya H a diterima dan H 0ditolak, yang berarti terdapat pengaruh penggunaan metode Reading to Learn (R2L) terhadapkemampuan HOTs-Literacy Sains siswa. Pengujian pada pembuatan rangkuman diperoleh nilai sig 0,04 &lt; �� (0,05) dengan ini, H a diterima dan H 0 ditolak, terdapat pengaruh pembuatanrangkuman terhadap kemampuan HOTs-Literacy Sains siswa pada materi hidrokarbon.Pengujian pada metode Reading to Learn dan pembuatan rangkuman secara simultandiperoleh nilai sig 0.00 &lt; �� (0,05), artinya metode Reading to Learn dan pembuatanrangkuman secara simultan (bersama-sama) mempengaruhi kemampuan HOTs-Literacy Sainssiswa pada materi hidrokarbon.
