Abstract

Inflammation is the body's response to tissue damage and infection. Prolonged inflammation can increase the risk of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Some factors that can trigger inflammation are dietary patterns, high physical activity, and body composition. This study examined the correlation between dietary inflammatory index (DII), physical activity, body composition, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels. It examined differences in characteristics based on gender. This study was a cross-sectional design of 55 adolescent athletes at the Student Sports Education and Training Center in Central Java. The exclusion criteria were an athlete who had a physical injury (did not participate in training) and a smoker. The DII score was calculated based on the dietary pattern using SQFFQ, anthropometric data (weight, height, and nutritional status based on BMI/age), body composition (body fat percentage, fat mass, and fat-free mass) using the BIA tool, physical activity data for the last seven days using IPAQ and hs-CRP levels using the FIA method. Our result showed that the DII score was significantly correlated with hs-CRP (p=0.013). There was no correlation between physical activity, body composition, and anthropometry with hs-CRP levels (p>0.05). There were differences in body height, body weight, body fat percentage, and fat-free mass between males and females (p<0.001). The diet of athletes had anti-inflammatory potential (83.6%), as evidenced by the intake of vitamins and minerals, and athletes had low hs-CRP levels <1 mg/L (85.5%), indicating that no inflammation occurred. Future longitudinal research is needed with a large population of adolescent athletes to explain the role of anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory diets on the incidence of inflammation and measure physical exercise in athletes to reduce inflammatory bias.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of obesity which continues to grow in children and adolescents is a concern since it increases degenerative disease risk. Obesity is not only a problem in urban areas, but it is also growing in rural areas.Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the determinants of obesity in adolescents in rural and urban areas in Banten Province.Materials and Methods: This research design used a case-control method with a purposive sampling technique. The sample in the study consisted of 160 adolescent subjects from 2 different schools. Each school representing 40 case samples that were adolescents with obesity and control adolescents with a normal body mass index. This study was conducted at one school in Cilegon City to represent the urban sample and one school in Pandeglang Regency to represent the rural sample. For each sample, body weight and height were measured, filling out the SQ-FFQ, International Physical Activity Questioner (IPAQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and DASS-42 (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale) questionnaires. Data regarding the results of air quality monitoring which includes data (PM10, SO2 O3 and NO2) was obtained from the Environmental Service. Meanwhile, data were analyzed by using Chi-Square and logistic regression.Results: The determinants of obesity in adolescents in rural were protein intake more than RDA (p=0.003 OR=9.948), low physical activity (P=0.005 OR=22.094), high of  SO2 exposure (P=0.005 OR=19.817) and bad sleep quality (P=0.007 OR=8.901) while adolescents in urban were protein intake more than RDA  (p=0.001 OR=21.570), bad sleep quality (p=0.002 OR=16.550), high stress level (p=0.006 OR=15.922) and carbohydrate intake more than RDA  (p=0.072 OR=5.044).Conclusion: Protein intake is the biggest determinant of the incidence of obesity in adolescents both in rural and urban areas.

Abstract

Background: Demak, as a disaster-prone coastal area in Central Java, faces issues such as malnutrition and food insecurity due to the impacts of climate change. As a result of coastal disasters, vulnerable people in coastal areas often experience loss of livelihoods, limited access to nutritious food, and increased risk of malnutrition.Objective: The study aimed to analyze the association between household food security and household demographic factors in Central Java’s coastal areas.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 138 households living in the coastal area of Demak by simple random sampling. The socio-demographic characteristics were conducted by interviewing the mother/child caregiver. The degree of household food security (HFS) was obtained using the Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square were used for statistical analysis.Results: Based on HFS status, 49.3% of respondents were food secure, 26.1% were food insecure without hunger, 20.3% were food insecure with moderate hunger, and 4.3% were food insecure with severe hunger. There was significant correlation between father’s educational level, mother’s educational level, and monthly household income per month on the HFS status (p<0.05).Conclusion: Sociodemographic factors associated with household food security status were father's and mother's education and monthly household income (p<0.05). The potential negative impact of household food insecurity on the nutritional status of family members needs to be studied further, especially vulnerable age groups such as toddlers and mothers in the household.

Abstract

Background: The elderly, aged 60 and above, are expected to increase in number in the coming years. Aging brings about various changes, impacting both physical and mental health. Proper protein intake and exercise can boost muscle protein synthesis, while maintaining optimal vitamin D levels is crucial. Research is necessary to explore vitamin D's impact on elderly muscle mass.Objective: This study aims to investigate the effect of adding vitamin d supplementation to protein and exercise on handgrip strength in healthy elderly.Materials and Methods: 24 participants were randomized in a double-blinded, pilot study ages 60- 80 years Subjects were divided into two groups. Group 1 was given interventions of vitamin D supplementation 1000 UI/day combining soy + oats milk as a protein and exercise. The second group was given intervention of soy+ oats milk protein, and exercise. The intervention program was administered for 8 weeks. Data comparison whitin and between groups were analyzed by Independent T-test, Mann-Whitney, and Paired T-testResults: Data from all participants was analyzed, before and after interventions of handgrip was increased in both of groups from a mean of 17.18kg to 18.06kg for the right hand and 15.17kg to 18.26kg for the left hand in Group 1, 13.80kg to 16.86kg for the right hand and 15.45kg to 17.32kg for the left hand in Group 2. Results of the difference test analysis between the two groups (ANOVA t = 0.548, P= 0172) showed no difference between group 1 and group 2.Conclusion: In this study, there was no effect of adding vitamin D supplementation on handgrip at healthy elderly participants.

Abstract

Stunting, characterized by impaired growth and development in children under five, is a major health issue caused by chronic malnutrition and recurrent infections during the first 1000 days of life. Protein intake is crucial for the provision of essential amino acids necessary for optimal growth and immune function. This study aimed to analyze the effect of whey protein-based high-protein biscuits on short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) levels in stunted children. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-post test group was used. Thirty-six stunted children were divided into two groups: the intervention group received whey protein-based high-protein biscuits, while the control group received an equivalent protein source from eggs and tempeh. SCFA levels were measured before and after the intervention. Paired T-tests and Wilcoxon tests were used for statistical analysis. The study found that high-protein biscuits significantly increased SCFA levels (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) in the intervention group (p-value < 0.001). These findings suggest that high-protein biscuits can positively influence gut microbiota and overall health in stunted children. High-protein biscuits can effectively increase SCFA levels in stunted children, contributing to improved gut health. Future studies should explore the long-term effects and potential risks associated with this intervention

Abstract

Decreased levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) are markers of oxidative stress and indicate obesity. Leunca fruit (Solanum Nigrum L) is a plant that contains antioxidants that can reduce the level of oxidative stress in obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of leunca fruit administration on SOD and MDA levels in obese rats. This type of research is true experimental with a post-test-only research design where 30 male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups consisting of 2 control groups K(-) and K(+) and three treatment groups (P1, P2, P3). Groups K+, P1, P2, and P3 were fed a high-fat and sucrose diet (21% lard, 34% sucrose). The K (-) control group is a group of healthy rats that only receive standard feed without being given leunca fruit. Group K (+) is a group of obese rats without leunca fruit. Leunca fruit was given for six weeks at a dose of 0.8g (P1), 1.6g (P2), and 2.4g (P3). Serum SOD levels were measured by ELISA method and MDA levels were measured by TBARS method. Statistical analysis using One Way Anova test. Administration of leunca fruit with graded doses can significantly increase SOD activity p=0.000 (p<0.05) and can significantly reduce MDA levels in obese rats in each treatment group p=0.000 (p<0.05). Leunca fruit with a dose of 2.4g/BB rat is the most effective dose to increase SOD levels and reduce MDA levels. The limitation of this study that there is no weighing of the remaining rat feed at each meal, so that the percentage of rat intake is was unknown.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescents is significantly high. Overweight and obesity among Islamic students (referred to as santri in Indonesian) are caused by low diet quality, characterized by inappropriate food intake and low physical activity (energy expenditure). Behavior modification is needed to improve diet quality and body composition. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the effects of a nutrition class on diet quality, body fat percentage, and waist circumference among female Islamic boarding school students. Methods: This quasi-experimental investigation employed a pre-post test group design with 34 subjects who met the inclusion criteria. The subjects consisted of 17 treatment and 17 control subjects. The treatment group participated in a santri nutrition class involving four nutrition education sessions and 12 aerobic exercise sessions in a month. Diet quality data were gathered using the Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) form. Body fat percentage was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and waist circumference was measured using Medline. Data were analyzed using the independent t-test, Mann-Whitney test, Wilcoxon test, and paired t-test. Results: Subjects with overweight and obesity exhibited low diet quality. Differences in diet quality changes, variation, and adequacy components were observed between the treatment and control groups (p-value=0.001, 0.029, 0.001, respectively). There was no significant differences in changes in body fat percentage and waist circumference between the two groups (p-value=0.487, 0.385, respectively). Conclusions: The santri nutritional class positively impacts diet quality, variation score, adequacy score, and waist circumference among overweight and obese female Islamic boarding school students.

Abstract

Background: Soil transmitted helminth(STH) infection is an infection caused by a group of nematode worms that is transmitted through parasite larvae or eggs that develop in the soil and then come into direct contact with humans. Helminth infections have a relationship with hygiene practices and environmental sanitation, in addition to adequate nutritional intake that makes the body's immune system strong so that it can prevent and fight infections, one of these important nutrients is protein.Objectives: To analyze the relationship between hygiene, environmental sanitation and protein intake on helminthiasis infection among toddlers aged 24-59 monthsMethods: Analytical research using a cross-sectional study in Atu Lintang District, Central Aceh Regency conducted in August-September 2023. The subjects used in this study were toddlers aged 24-59 months as many as 100 toddlers whose sampling used purposive sampling method. Data were collected by observation and interviewing the hygiene questionnaire, environmental sanitation and Semi quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) to determine the adequacy of protein intake. Stool sample examination using the Kato Katz method. Data were analyzed using the Fisher Exact test with a significance level of 95%.Results: The results showed that 9% of toddlers were infected with STH and 91% were not infected with STH. Hand washing (p=0,002) and nail hygiene (p=0,000) were significantly associated with STH infection while footwear use (p=1,000), environmental sanitation (p=0,086) and protein intake (0.078) showed no significant association.Conclusion: In this study, the hygiene practices of hand washing and nail hygiene had a significant association with helminthiasis infection.

Abstract

Background: Consumption of foods that are high in calories over a long period of time is a cause of obesity and can increase proinflammatory cytokines. Leunca fruit contains various phytochemicals that act as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiobesity but not many people utilize leunca fruit as daily food.Objective: To analyze the effect of leunca fruit on TNF-α and IL-6 levels in rats induced by high fat and sucrose diet (HFSD).Methods: The research design was Randomized Post Test Only Control Group Design. The sample was 30 male Sparague Dawley rats and divided into 5 groups, namely group K1 which was given standard feed, group K2 which was induced by HFSD, group P1 which was induced by HFSD and leunca 0.8g/200gBW, group P2 which was induced by HFSD and leunca 1.6g/200gBW, and group P3 which was induced by HFSD and leunca 2.4g/200gBW. The research was conducted at the Nutrition Laboratory of the Center for Food and Nutrition Studies of Gadjah Mada University (PSPG PAU UGM) Yogyakarta in January-March 2024. Testing TNF-α and IL-6 levels through rat blood serum using the ELISA method. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Post Hoc test.Results: There was a significant difference in TNF-α and IL-6 levels between experimental groups (p=0.00). The levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in the P1, P2, and P3 groups that received HFSD + leunca were lower than in the K2 group that received HFSD only.Conclusion: Leunca fruit can reduce proinflammatory cytokine levels (TNF-α and IL-6) in HFSD-induced rats.

Abstract

Background: Excessive intake of white rice has been associated with elevated triglyceride (TG) levels and decreased high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations. Conversely, black and red rice varieties have demonstrated favorable impacts on lipid metabolism. However, despite these benefits, their palatability and texture are often met with aversion by consumers. Consequently, it is imperative to investigate rice blends that are both well-received by individuals and exhibit pronounced efficacy in reducing the TG/HDL ratio.Objective: To investigate the differential effects on the TG/HDL ratio in rats administered different combinations of white, red, and black rice.Methods: This research follows a true experimental design incorporating pre- and post-tests with a control group. Thirty rats were initially fed a hyperlipidemic diet for 14 days. Subsequently, the rats were subjected to interventions involving different rice combinations for a duration of 28 days. These combinations included K(+) (positive control), P1 (100% white rice), P2 (21 g red and 4 g white rice), P3 (16 g black and 4 g white rice), and P4 (8 g black, 8 g red, and 4 g white rice). Triglyceride and HDL levels were quantified using the GPO-PAP and CHOD-PAP methods, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed utilizing ANOVA tests followed by LSD post-hoc tests for comparison.Results: Triglycerides decrease in P4 (-51.04±0.72) was the highest, followed by P3 (47.18±0.51), P2 (-34.60±1.07), P1 (-17.03±1, 06). Cholesterol HDL increase in P4 (49.36±1.68) was the highest, followed by P3 (42.71±0.41), P2 (38.09±0.76), P1 (30.64±0.90). The TG/HDL ratio in P1, P2, P3, and P4 were 0.21±0.092, -2.12±0.164, -2.45±0.123, -2.82±0.148, -3.18±0.371, respectively. The rice combination intervention had a significant decreased on the TG/HDL ratio (p=0.000).Conclusion: The intervention involving rice combinations resulted in a greater reduction in the TG/HDL ratio compared to the consumption of white rice alone. Among the various combinations tested, the combination of white, red, and black rice demonstrated the most significant reduction in the triglyceride to HDL-cholesterol (TG/HDL) ratio.
