Abstract

[English]: This study was aimed to describe the abstraction process of students with different cognitive styles in learning common tangent lines of two circles using recognizing, building-with, and construction (RBC) model. This qualitative research collected data through questionnaires, written tests, and task-based interviews. Eight students with field-dependent and field-independent were involved as the subjects. The interview transcripts were analyzed and grouped into cognitive actions of the RBC model. Findings showed that to reach the stage of construction activities, field-dependent students tend to need guidance and more time in recognizing and constructing the concept of a common tangent of two circles using their prior knowledge. Meanwhile, field-independent students tend to directly recognize and construct the concept using their prior knowledge so that they successfully constructed the concept of common tangent lines of two circles. This study shows that (1) field-dependent students use their prior knowledge that relates to the concept of common tangent lines of two circles less than field-independent students who tend to be able to use most of their prior knowledge relevant to the concept of common tangent lines of two circles, and (2) students who has similar cognitive style may not show the same success in abstraction process. Abstract

Mathematics is not only for educating functional members of society and producing a competent workforce but also for instilling social values and responsible citizenship. STEM is a potential learning approach to teaching social justice because it encourages students to integrate knowledge and skills from different subjects to solve real-life problems. This paper reports the first phase of design research to develop a STEM activity incorporating social justice issues for 8th-grade mathematics classrooms. The result of the first phase is a set of learning materials that integrates the subject content gradient in mathematics and simple machine in science in the context of designing an effective and efficient ramp for public use. The study confirmed that by designing in such a way that mathematics and science knowledge and skills are used in solving problems, social justice issues could be meaningful contexts for STEM lessons.

Abstract

Questioning is one of the critical repertoires in dialogic teaching. Teachers who set dialogic classrooms need to be able to use questioning effectively. Effective questioning techniques by teachers improve teacher-student instructional dialogues in primary school mathematics classrooms. In this study, the questioning practices of three primary school mathematics teachers were analysed in their journey to incorporate dialogic teaching. Data were gathered through lesson observations, video recordings and teacher interviews. The three teachers’ classroom discourses were transcribed verbatim, and teachers’ questions were analysed to find out the types of questions, how the teachers asked the questions and the feedback given to the student’s responses. Findings from this study indicated that the three teachers used effective questioning techniques in ensuring dialogic teaching, with focusing, genuine enquiry, and closed testing questions being the most predominant. The teachers portrayed positive attitudes towards dialogic teaching and shared their comprehensive understanding of the approach.

Abstract

Reciting the Quran is a good habit that can improve people's cognitive abilities, including reasoning. However, according to Bloom's theory, memorization is categorized as the lowest cognitive domain, while according to NCTM, the reasoning is included in the higher-order thinking process. Hence, there is a contradiction in theories of thinking. This study aims to describe the type of reasoning of reciting the Quran students based on their recitation of the Quran ability. This research method is qualitative with a case study approach. The instrument used in this study was a reasoning test and interview guidelines. The results showed that 3 of 4 subjects with high recitation ability used creative reasoning, only one with medium recitation ability used algorithmic reasoning, and none with low recitation ability used a specific reasoning type.

Abstract

This descriptive quantitative study explored secondary school students’ reasons for receiving or not receiving private mathematics tutoring. It also explored the prevalent teaching methods private mathematics tutors use. A questionnaire was adapted to collect data from 1,309 Year 7 to Year 12 students (ages 11 to 17 years) in three countries: Brunei, Indonesia, and Iraq. The results highlight that students may receive private mathematics tutoring to pass national examinations and improve examination scores. Teachers also adapt to teaching approaches that enable students to achieve these teaching and learning goals. This study provides an initial understanding of the common reasons and teaching methods used in private mathetics tutoring across different contexts that prioritise high-stakes examination culture. The results provide implications for how private mathematics tutoring can be used to support effective teaching and learning compared to the high-stakes reasons it seems it promotes. The results also accentuate the need for families and other stakeholders to reconsider private mathematics tutoring as an opportunity to remediate the challenges students encounter in their normal classroom instruction to improve student learning.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the sacredness of the Srimpi Merak Kesimpir dance and how to preserve it using qualitative descriptive methods. The Peacock Kesimpir Dance by Hamengkubuwana VII is a dance that was sacred at the beginning of creation. A king's work is a talisman or heirloom that is always looked after and maintained for the preservation of the sacred dance work. The research method used is qualitative descriptive using interviews, photo documents, reference books, videos, online magazines, e-books and other very in-depth data for cultural experts. The results of the research found that commodification in the peacock kesimpir dance, which was previously only performed in the palace environment, is now being performed outside the palace to function as a cultural performance. Clothes, floor patterns and even jewelry are all made better and more attractive. In terms of sacredness, it is certainly reduced, but in terms of preservation, it is one solution to be sustainable. Every work of art will experience development, even if it is a work from hamengkubuwana to VII. The king's masterpieces are inseparable from being in line with the times.
