Abstract

This study explores students’ responses to the use of a bilingual (Arabic-English) pocket dictionary in learning activities at an Islamic boarding school in Jombang. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, involving students as participants. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations of the students of Al Munawaroh Islamic boarding school at Jombang. The findings indicate that the bilingual pocket dictionary significantly supports vocabulary acquisition, enhances learner autonomy, and increases motivation. However, some limitations include over-reliance on direct translation and limited contextual understanding. The study suggests integrating dictionary use with contextual learning strategies to optimize language acquisition.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop grammar instruction videos for students at grade VIII. This study uses Research and Development research design on its application, specializing in ADDIE model. Data collection were done using questionnaire to 10 eight grade students from Madinatul Ulum Junior High School and interview was done to gather data from the teacher. Through this study it is found that there is quite high demand on creating a creative and new teaching aid for teaching-learning process. Researcher developed video as instructional media that involved Simple Present Tense, Simple Past Tense, Present Continuous Tense, There is-There are, and Modals Can-Will-Must-Should as the topic disscused. Based on the data obtained on develop phase, 4.57 was from  the material expert, 4.44 score  was from the media expert and a score of 4.44 was obtained  on the implementation process. The scores prove that the product were in good quality and worth to use. KEYWORDS: Instructional Media, Grammar, Video   ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan video pembelajaran pada materi grammar untuk siswa kelas VIII. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian dan pengembangan yang mengadaptasi model ADDIE. Pada tahap analisa kebutuhan, peneliti menggunakan angket yang disebarkan kepada  10 siswa kelas VIII, serta wawancara kepada pihak guru untuk memperoleh data terkait media yang digunakan sebelumnya. Berdasarkan data tersebut, perlu dikembangkan sebuah media pembelajaran yang dapat membantu proses pembelajaran selama masa pandemi. Topik yang dibahas meliputi beberapa materi diantaranya: Simple Present Tense, Simple Past Tense, Present Continuous Tense, There is-There are, and Modals Can-Will-Must-Should. Berdasarkan data hasil validasi, diperoleh angka 4.57 untuk penilaian dari aspek materi serta 4.44 untuk penilaian dari aspek media. Dan saat tahap implementasi, diperoleh skor 4.44 yang bermakna media pembelajaran ini layak untuk digunakan.

Abstract

The research aimed to develop a formative assessment using Quizizz to assess English reading skills. The researcher used descriptive text as material and the questions that were created were 50 in multiple-choice types assessment. The subjects of this study were 17 students of the first grade of SMK Pendidikan Megaluh. The research method was the Research and Development (R&D) method that adopted the ADDIE model that consisted of five procedures:  Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. From those steps, this research was validated by 4 experts, 2 media experts, and 2 media experts (expert validation). As follows: 1). The results of media validation were 4,5 (better category), 2). The result of material validation was 4,4 (better category), The research got data after implementation as follows: 1). The result of the validity test is invalid, 2). The result of the reliability test used Kuder-Richardson /KR-20 was 0,547 (medium reliability), 3). The result of the difficulty test was 4 in the middle category and 21 in the easier category, 4). The result of the discriminating power test was 1 in the lower category, 12 in the low category, 9 moderate category, and 3 in the good category. 5). The student’s response questionnaire was 86% (better category). Based on the research, the researcher concluded that Quizizz deserved to be used as an assessment instrument because the product was interesting and the student’s response was enthusiastic. Some things that need to be highlighted are the need for revision of the test.

Abstract

This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Elsa Speak application as a learning media to improve students’ English-speaking skills in the extra class at MA Al-Bairuny. The research used a quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental group taught using the AI-based Elsa Speak application, and a control group taught without the application. The research began with a pre-test to assess students’ speaking abilities. The average pre-test score of the experimental group was 57.33, while the control group had an average of 61.67. During the treatment, the experimental group practiced speaking using Elsa Speak, which offers features such as pronunciation analysis and instant feedback. The control group continued learning through traditional methods without the application. After the treatment, a post-test was conducted. The experimental group showed significant improvement with an average score of 70.00, increasing by 12.67 points. Meanwhile, the control group showed only slight progress, with an average post-test score of 62.33, an increase of just 0.67 points. The results indicate that Elsa Speak is effective in improving students’ pronunciation, fluency, and confidence. This research highlights the potential of AI-based technology to enhance the quality of English language education in the digital era.

Abstract

This community service program was conducted in Tawangsari Village, Trowulan District, Mojokerto Regency, focusing on empowering village officials and local UMKM through digital technology utilization. The main objective was to enhance digital literacy among village officials in managing a YouTube channel as a means of public communication, while strengthening UMKM’ visual identity through logo and banner design. The program applied the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, consisting of several stages: needs assessment, planning, workshop implementation, intensive mentoring, and evaluation. The workshop was divided into two sessions, namely YouTube channel management (content creation, video editing, and account management) and visual design (logo and banner production for UMKM products). Evaluation was carried out through pre-test and post-test assessments, satisfaction questionnaires, and portfolio evaluation of participants’ outputs. The results revealed significant improvements in both digital literacy and visual design skills, as indicated by the increase of average scores from 55 to 83 for digital literacy, and from 50 to 80 for visual design. Furthermore, the village officials successfully launched the official YouTube channel of Tawangsari Village, while UMKM actors produced professional logos and banners to represent their product identity. The program not only improved technical skills but also raised awareness of the importance of branding and digital literacy as a strategy for strengthening competitiveness. In conclusion, ICT-based workshops proved effective in strengthening village community capacity. The main recommendation is the need for program sustainability through consistent content publication on YouTube, continuous use of UMKM logos, and advanced digital marketing training to expand market reach.

Abstract

This research investigates the use of illocutionary speech acts in the film My Oxford Year. Although previous studies have analyzed illocutionary speech acts in films, most focus on identifying speech act types, with limited attention to the role of contextual and non-verbal elements in interpreting speakers’ intentions. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the types and functions of illocutionary speech acts used by the main character in My Oxford Year. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of dialogues containing illocutionary speech acts, supported by contextual information such as facial expressions, gestures, and intonation. The data were collected through observation, transcription, and note-taking, and analyzed using Searle’s (1979) theory of illocutionary speech acts and Leech’s (1983) theory of illocutionary functions. The findings revealed 76 utterances containing illocutionary speech acts. Assertive speech acts were found to be the most frequently used type, particularly in expressing information, opinions, and beliefs. In terms of function, collaborative functions appeared most frequently, indicating that the characters mainly used language to exchange information and maintain interpersonal relationships. These findings suggest that the interpretation of illocutionary speech acts is influenced not only by the linguistic form of the utterances but also by the context and accompanying non-verbal expressions. Therefore, this research contributes to pragmatic and discourse studies by demonstrating how verbal and non-verbal elements work together to construct meaning and shape communication in film discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ perspectives toward the use of Quizizz Paper Mode as a grammar assessment tool at Al-Mardliyah Islamic Boarding School, Tambakberas, Jombang. The study also explores the advantages and obstacles experienced by students during its implementation. Considering the limited access to gadgets and the internet in Islamic boarding schools, Quizizz Paper Mode was selected as an alternative technology-based assessment that does not require students to use smartphones. This research employed a mixed-method approach using a convergent design. Quantitative data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed to 40 students, while qualitative data were obtained from interviews, open-ended questionnaires, and classroom observations involving 20 students. Both datasets were analyzed separately and then integrated to provide a comprehensive understanding of students’ perspectives. The findings reveal that students generally have positive perceptions of Quizizz Paper Mode as a grammar assessment tool. Quantitative results indicate that most students agreed that Quizizz Paper Mode is easy to use, helps improve grammar understanding, provides effective instant feedback, and increases motivation and engagement during assessment. These findings are supported by qualitative data, which show that students felt more enthusiastic, focused, and confident when learning grammar, particularly in gerund and pronoun materials. The instant correction feature enabled students to identify mistakes and learn independently without always relying on teacher explanations.
