Abstract

The Selayar Community is a term for residents who live in the administrative area of the Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi Province of Indonesia. The people who live in the southernmost district of Sulawesi Island are often considered to be speakers of the Konjo dialect of the Makassar language or also called the Selayar tribe. Is the social system of the Selayar people trying to get out of the shadow of their parent ethnicity (Makassar)? This question is indeed important to answer, but what is certain is that the culture of the Selayar people is the formation of various immigrant cultural influences. Using a historical sociology approach, this paper discusses the social interactions of the Selayar people, social strata, social groups, power and authority, social changes, and social deviations. The study of the Selayar people in this sociological view will at least provide an understanding of social characteristics and cultural heritage by looking at the synchronicity between the past and present reality.

Abstract

In social research there are two methods that are often used, namely a qualitative approach which is built on the foundation of the philosophy of phenomenology and a quantitative approach which refers to the philosophy of positivism. The two adherents of this approach sometimes criticize each other, especially regarding their effectiveness and reliability in presenting data related to social problems. This paper examines the two not in opposite positions, but reveals the characteristics of each and the possibility of using these two approaches simultaneously in research activities. A certain theory, including the study approach, is not always in accordance with the social problems studied, so that these two approaches, namely qualitative and quantitative, are the choices to be used. This paper also discusses about humans and their problems, what are social problems, research and its objectives, and the steps of research.

Abstract

This paper describes the socio-cultural heritage of the Bugis people in South Sulawesi from the perspective of sociology. The study approach in this research is historical sociology, which is intended to explore the socio-cultural values of the past as a legacy that needs to be preserved. The life of the Bugis people throughout its history is very interesting to study, at least as a comparison with the reality of life now, namely after one of the ethnic groups in Sulawesi Province was influenced by modernization. This sociological study of Bugis society begins with a brief description of Bugis people and the world, social interactions, kinship systems, social stratification, social mobility, and social changes in Bugis society. Contact with the outside world and the Bugis people's penchant for wandering, caused this ethnic group to develop rapidly and even history records that the Bugis people built a center of government and became rulers of the kingdom in the archipelago.

Abstract

The most concerning social problem today is anomalous behavior and the erosion of collective collegial values. Therefore, character development, especially related to collective values such as mutual cooperation, has become an important issue in Indonesia. This research aims to provide a comprehensive description of the history and character entities that are characteristic of the Bajo Tribe community in Wanci Island, Wakatobi Regency. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method to obtain objective data through three data collection techniques: interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of this research indicate that the migration of the Bajo tribe to the Mola region on Wanci Island began in the 1960s as a means of avoiding social conflict and accusations of involvement with the DI/TII rebellion movement on Kaledupa Island. The character of mutual cooperation upheld by the Bajo Mola community reflects a fair and inclusive social system, where the practice of mutual aid is manifested regardless of social status, age, or individual background. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the need to maintain mutual cooperation as a pillar of solidarity and social harmony in order to embody virtuous people.

Abstract

Purpose-This research aims to analyze the role of character education in addressing racism among Generation Z, who are frequently exposed to racial issues through social media. Research Methodology/Design/Approach- A descriptive qualitative approach was used with a library research method. Various relevant literature sources were examined to understand both the phenomenon of racism and strategies for implementing character education. Findings-The study finds that character education—emphasizing values such as tolerance, empathy, justice, and equality—plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive mindset within Generation Z. These values can be integrated into curricula, extracurricular activities, and digital platforms to support anti-racism efforts. However, challenges such as cultural resistance and unequal access to quality education remain significant obstacles. Addressing these requires collaboration among educators, parents, communities, and social institutions. Originality/value-This research highlights the strategic importance of strengthening character education as a foundation for building an inclusive society free from racial discrimination. It offers insights into integrating anti-racism values within educational programs tailored for the digital era’s unique challenges faced by Generation Z

Abstract

This study aims to determine the background of the emergence of traditional woven fabric craftsmen in To'barana North Toraja Regency in 2017-2023, the development of traditional woven fabric craftsmen in To'barana, and the social life of traditional woven fabric craftsmen. This research is a qualitative study that uses a historical approach method with four stages of work, namely: heuristics (finding and collecting sources), source criticism (external criticism and internal criticism), interpretation (interpretation of sources), and historiography (writing history). Data collection methods were carried out by conducting field research, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that the beginning of the emergence of traditional woven fabric craftsmen in To'barana was marked by historical relics in the form of sumpu woven fabric (endless woven fabric), which was made by one of the descendants of the nobles in To'barana, namely Ne'butung and Ne'panggau during the Japanese occupation which was used as a pennammu' (blanket) needed during the war. So that this weaving heritage has become one of the main professions for the To'barana Village community which was designated as a Weaving Village in 2017-2023. Supported by production equipment and support from the North Toraja Regency government, it also has an impact on marketing development, where the craft has been marketed outside Toraja Regency such as Makassar and Papua.
