Abstract

The To Wani Tolotang Hindu Indigenous Community is facing major challenges due to modernization, urbanization, and social changes that have the potential to threaten the survival of their culture and religion. In this study, there are limited data because traditional leaders only exist in Sidrap, precisely in Amparita. This study aims to analyze the sustainability factors of the community in Bakukiki District, Parepare City. Based on this goal, it is in accordance with the results of the research where in the research the existence of the indigenous community is still maintained until now, as evidenced by various strategies that have been applied in the lives of the people in the community. With a phenomenological approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documents/documentation of 16 selected informants using purposive sampling. The data analysis techniques in this study use data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. This study contributes so that the next research can provide a better picture of the form of existence of an indigenous community in Indonesia. The results of the research show that the sustainability of the community is supported by strong beliefs, the implementation of traditional ceremonies, and cultural identities that continue to be maintained. This research recommends further collaboration for community preservation

Abstract

Urban villages are a topic of interest to researchers, especially in urban social, economic and cultural studies. There are many peculiarities, especially narratives about social systems and cultural heritage, which need to be dialogued in social science studies. This research examines the history of the establishment of Paropo Village in Makassar City, social and cultural development, and efforts to preserve traditional culture. As a type of qualitative historical research, the research method uses four stages, namely: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that Paropo Village was founded by four figures, namely I Janggo' Cambang Paropo, Dato' Pung Malaja, and Sheikh Al-Amin, with the first three houses facing north. In 1970, the village officially became part of Makassar City after previously belonging to Gowa. Paropo Village has two types of traditional cultural preservation, namely Kondobuleng Theater and Pepe'pepekka ri Makka Dance, which are preserved by conducting natural regeneration through an art studio known as Baruga Paropo.

Abstract

This paper discusses the sociology of space which is a part or extension of sociology that uses geographical theories, especially human geography, economic geography, and feminist geography. The scope of the study targets various social practices, the dynamics of the power of social institutions and spatial dialectics as a form of human interaction with space. This type of research is descriptive research using data obtained from studies of various literature both in scientific journal articles, popular scientific articles, books, and other types of written works. As a library research, data analysis is carried out by comparing it with other sources that study similar contexts. The results of the study show that for quite a long time, the sociology of space has played an important role and contributed positively in providing a new nuance to the study of social sciences and even space is considered an important part of the process of forming sociological theories. The interdisciplinary characteristics of the sociology of space, in its development, are greatly inspired by the theories of Marxism and Postcolonialism and in the scope of its study there is much overlap with geography and architecture.

Abstract

The sociology of space has so far made important contributions to the development of social theories, especially the study of urban society, public space, and urban planning. This paper discusses some of the pioneers of the sociology of space, the social reality in which they live that influences their spatial imagination, and their written works. This type of research is a literature review in the form of tracing sources through the review of books, articles, and other types of scientific works. The results showed that there are several people who are famous as pioneers of this type of sociology, namely: Georg Simmel, Michael Foucault, Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, Manuel Castells, Edward Soja, Martina Low, and Doreen Massey. Each of these pioneers, either separately or together, gave a distinctive color to the study of sociology using the auxiliary sciences of geography and architecture. The discussion of the pioneering figures of the sociology of space will also facilitate readers in the theoretical categorization process of who influenced what figures and was influenced by whose figures as “narrators”.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the symbolic meaning of Tau-Tau (wooden statues depicting the deceased) in the narrative of spatial awareness among the Toraja people. Using a sociological approach, this study explores the existence of Tau-tau, which not only serves as a physical representation of the deceased, but also acts as a symbolic marker that actively shapes the collective understanding of space. In this context, the spaces referred to are sacred spaces (the spirit world), social spaces (settlements and ceremonial sites), and cosmological spaces. The research method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques involving participant observation and in-depth interviews with traditional elders, families who own Tau-Tau, and the general public in Tana Toraja. The results of the study reveal that the presence of Tau-Tau on the cliffs of burial grounds in the hills creates a cultural landscape that connects the world of the living with the world of the ancestors. Tau-tau become silent but powerful narrators that affirm social hierarchy, family status, and the continuity of the relationship between the living and the dead. In the context of Toraja community spatial awareness, this is a complex socio-cultural construction, in which tau-tau function as key elements in interpreting, regulating, and animating that space. The main contribution of this research is to provide a deeper understanding of the socio-cultural dynamics of local communities, particularly regarding the interrelationship between symbols, space, and social structures

Abstract

This study aims to determine the background of the construction of Pakui Sayang Park, the function and role of Pakui Sayang Park and the social impact of the presence of this park as a Public Space in Makassar City. The temporal of this study starts from 2016, which is the year when the park was built, until 2023, when the most recent data on the existence of this public space can be obtained. This research uses historical research methods, with stages: heuristic, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the study show that the background of the construction of Pakui Sayang Park is the emergence of a series of ideas that were energized by the existence of an unkempt and very alarming vacant land in the General Revenue Office area on Jalan A.P. Pettarani. For this reason, the Makassar City government built Pakui Sayang Park to become one of the sports venues and become a Green Open Space. The utilization of Pakui Sayang Park as a public space includes the location of major events such as Ramadan bazaars and concerts, sports facilities, and a place to relax.

Abstract

This article examines the role of Bale-bale in the socio-historical landscape of various rural communities in Indonesia. Beyond its basic function as a place of rest, this traditional pavilion is discussed through a sociological paradigm in the context of public spaces that played a vital role in the dialectic of communal life in the past. This study uses qualitative methods through historical and ethnographic literature reviews, which aim to reveal the dynamics of the Bale-bale as a multifunctional space. The results show that historically, the Bale-bale facilitated daily social interactions, served as a vehicle for information and deliberation, was a center of economic activity, and was a space for cultural practices such as the transmission of local knowledge and values. Its open and accessible architectural design represents the principles of togetherness, mutual cooperation, and transparency. Learning from the past, the role of the social institution known as Bale-bale can be reflected upon in the modern era to provide a perspective on the value of conceptualizing participatory and sustainable public spaceshome

Abstract

One interesting urban phenomenon is urbanization and its resulting impacts, often neglecting the function of public space for the sake of motorized vehicles. This results in reduced social interaction and local economic opportunities. Therefore, the Car Free Day program exists as a form of tactical urbanism to reclaim temporary street space by transforming it from a transportation corridor into a public space filled with activity. This article analyzes the practices of social interaction and economic activity that occur in this area, as well as the perceptions of visitors and business owners regarding the meaning of this public space. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the practice of utilizing space on the Boulevard highway has created a new socio-economic ecosystem in Makassar City. This government program also motivates the restoration of the social function of the road and forms a form of local economic empowerment. The findings of this study can even serve as recommendations for the city government for sustainable public space planning oriented towards fulfilling the social rights of city residents.

Abstract

Bungeng Port is a center of horse trading activities, which plays a vital role in connecting Jeneponto with other regions. This study aims to determine the background of horse trading in Bungeng Port, the spatial traces of horse trading development, and the impact of horse trading on the regional economy. This study uses a qualitative approach with historical methods involving heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the background of horse trading is influenced by natural environmental factors, food needs, transportation, land cultivation, employment opportunities, and export-import relations between regions. Jeneponto Regency, as a center of horse trading, has become a major supplier of horses because Bungeng Port functions as a connecting space for inter-island trade. The development of horse trading is also driven by the needs of the local community, and this trade has a positive impact on the economy, increasing the trade and livestock sectors, and strengthening economic relations between Jeneponto Regency and other regions.
