Abstract

The high water absorption of concrete causes the concrete to easily experience cracking and damage. One way to increase the durability of concrete is by adding microbes which can fill the micro cavities in the concrete with the resulting Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) deposits. However, the weakness of using microorganisms is that they are unable to withstand high hydration heat. Therefore, by varying the temperature in this research, it is possible to determine the effect of the metabolism of the bacteria produced. This research was carried out to avoid damage by creating a hydrophobic and self-healing layer which helps increase the durability and strength of the concrete. The concrete sample made resembles a cube measuring 5 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm. The manufacturing materials are Portland cement, Otawa sand, distilled water and a mixture of E. coli bacteria. Heating was carried out using an oven at temperatures of 30, 60, 90, and 120 oC. Characterization testing was carried out using a Cpmreson machine, XRD and contact angle testing.

Abstract

Buildings are facilities created by humans to support various human activities. Potential damage to old buildings, such as the appearance of cracks in building concrete. Self-healing is carried out by bacteria to repair micro cracks that occur in concrete by deposition of CaCO3. Bacteria-based preservatives consist of bacterial spores and organic compounds that are incorporated into the concrete structure. This research aims to determine the effect of variations in the concentration of E. coli bacteria on compressive strength and contact angle. Based on the results of the research data, two research results can be stated. First, the concentration of bacteria affects the compressive strength of the concrete and the maximum compressive strength occurs on day 14. Second, the concentration of bacteria affects the contact angle of the concrete so that it can be said that the concrete is hydrophobic. As for the XRD characterization, intensity data (I), diffraction angle ( ) were analyzed using High Score Plus. FTIR characterization was carried out in the range 4000 cm-1-500 cm-1. SEM characterization to see the morphology of the concrete with a magnification of 2500 times. SEM can also show E. coli bacteria in concrete

Abstract

The development of electronic teaching materials has become an important issue in science learning, but studies that specifically discuss the development of e-modules on climate change and global warming materials integrated with the Problem Based Learning model remain limited. This study aimed to determine the validity level of the developed e-module. This study used a Research and Development (R&D) method with the 4D development model consisting of the define, design, develop, and disseminate stages. The implementation of the study was limited to the develop stage, particularly expert appraisal or validity testing by three experts as validators. The validation instrument was developed based on teaching material development guidelines, with assessment components including material substance, instructional design, visual communication, software utilization, and the suitability of the teaching materials with the learning model. The results of the validity test from the three validators showed a percentage score of 91%, which was categorized as very valid. The conclusion of this study confirms that the e-module on climate change and global warming materials integrated with the Problem Based Learning model is declared valid, so it has the potential to be used as electronic teaching material that supports problem-based learning.

Abstract

Indonesia located along the equator and dominated by oceanic areas, is highly vulnerable to atmospheric dynamics and extreme convective weather. Minangkabau International Airport (BIM), situated in a coastal region of West Sumatra, is frequently affected by cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds and thunderstorms (TS), which pose risks to aviation safety. This study aims to determine the threshold values of the Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) index and the Total Totals Index (TT) that are appropriate for local conditions, based on radiosonde and synoptic observation data from 2019–2023, and verified using 2024 data. The CAPE and TT values were analyzed using Sturges’ method to determine frequency intervals and dichotomous analysis to establish threshold effectiveness. Results indicate that CAPE thresholds for Cb clouds range from 495 to 2679 J/kg, while TT thresholds for thunderstorms range from 43.5 to 47.4, depending on the seasonal variation (DJF, MAM, JJA, SON). These thresholds demonstrated strong performance in identifying convective weather events, thus serving as a useful reference for forecasting and enhancing flight safety at BIM.

Abstract

Efforts to develop 21st century skills have been carried out by changing the curriculum from the 2013 curriculum to an independent curriculum based on 21st century learning. One of the main focuses in this ability is the development of four core competencies known as 4C, including critical thinking and problem solving skills, creativity and innovation, collaboration skills, and effective communication skills. One of the four most important skills that must be developed by students is creative thinking skills. However, in reality, mastery of this ability is still relatively low. This low ability is caused by the teaching materials used in the learning process that have not been fully designed to support students' creative thinking skills and the Project Based Learning (PJBL) learning model. This study aims to analyze the need for developing E-modules based on Project Based Learning (PJBL). This study uses a development research approach with a 4-D model (Define, Design, Development, and Disseminate), which is limited to the Development stage. The results of the study revealed three main findings from the needs analysis: (1) students' creative thinking skills are still low, with a score of 36; (2) Based on teacher interviews, the teaching materials used in the learning process have not been fully designed to support students' creative thinking skills, and the Project Based Learning (PJBL) learning model is one of the learning models applied by teachers but is not yet optimal; (3) Determination of student characteristics, with scores for each indicator, student background 70.25, student learning interest 67.5, student learning motivation 66.67, student learning style 70.88, and digital learning 76.38. The research conclusion obtained from the needs analysis is that the development of an E-Module based on the Project Based Learning model assisted by the Heyzine application to facilitate students' creative thinking skills is very much needed by students.

Abstract

This study aims to implement experiment-based learning to improve students’ understanding of corrosion concepts. Experimental learning was selected because it provides more contextual learning experiences and helps students understand scientific concepts through direct observation. The study was conducted through corrosion experiments using iron plates subjected to coating treatment and immersion in NaCl solution with different immersion durations. The learning activities were designed to develop students’ observation, analytical, and problem-solving skills during the experimental process. The study employed an experimental approach by involving students in observing changes in material conditions caused by corrosion processes. The research data were obtained from observation results, practicum documentation, and evaluations of students’ conceptual understanding after the learning activities were completed. The findings showed that experiment-based learning helped students better understand corrosion concepts and the factors influencing corrosion rates. In addition, students demonstrated increased engagement and learning interest during the practicum activities. These findings indicate that experiment-based learning can serve as an effective alternative learning approach to support more meaningful and applicable science learning.

Abstract

The main problems in physics learning at schools are still low learning outcomes and students’ conceptual understanding, especially on the topic of measurement. One solution to overcome these problems is to develop teaching materials in the form of POE (Predict-Observe-Explain) based E-LKPD. This study aims to describe the characteristics of the E-LKPD and determine its validity, so that it can be used in the learning process. This research is a development research using the Plomp model, which includes three main stages: preliminary research, prototyping phase, and assessment phase. Based on the results, the POE (Predict-Observe-Explain) based E-LKPD on measurement topic has been designed with the following characteristics: (1) the E-LKPD is arranged according to the POE learning model, consisting of activities of predicting, observing & measuring, explaining understood concepts, and evaluation; (2) the E-LKPD is developed using Canva Pro and Heyzine Flipbook; (3) the POE based E-LKPD obtained a validation score of 0.93, categorized as valid in terms of content/material appropriateness, language, presentation, graphic design, application of the POE model, and digital media aspects.

Abstract

Students’ conceptual understanding of light waves remains relatively low, while the instructional materials currently in use have not been able to optimally facilitate the remediation of misconceptions. This study aims to analyze the need to develop a cognitive conflict-based e-module integrated with the deep learning approach—an approach that emphasizes meaningful, reflective, and enjoyable conceptual understanding through the components of meaningful learning, mindful learning, and joyful learning. The integration of cognitive conflict with the deep learning approach in the topic of light waves represents a novelty in this research, given that previous studies generally focused only on one of these approaches or combined cognitive conflict with Augmented Reality technology. This study is a preliminary investigation within Plomp’s preliminary research model for instructional design, with data collected through interviews with 2 physics teachers and 3 students, as well as a four-tier multiple-choice diagnostic test administered to 31 twelfth-grade students in Phase F at MAN 3 in Padang. The analysis results indicate that 69.7% of students held misconceptions, while the instructional materials used were still dominated by printed textbooks and worksheets and did not support concept visualization or the remediation of misconceptions. These findings underscore the need to develop e-modules based on cognitive conflict and a deep learning approach that align with the needs of teachers and students, while also contributing to the development of digital physics instructional materials capable of visualizing abstract concepts and supporting the remediation of misconceptions more effectively.

Abstract

This study investigated the functional group transformation of asphalt modified using Escherichia coli through mixing and coating methods as a biological self-healing approach for pavement materials. The experimental research was conducted under controlled laboratory conditions using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and hydrophobicity analysis to evaluate chemical, morphological, and surface performance changes. The mixing method promoted dominant internal interactions within the asphalt matrix, indicated by increased O–H functional groups and homogeneous bacterial distribution. In contrast, the coating method generated stronger surface reactions characterized by higher C–O intensity, enhanced biomineralization activity, and localized CaCO3 formation on the asphalt surface. SEM observations revealed that the coating method formed denser biofilm structures, contributing to improved hydrophobicity and accelerated microcrack healing performance. Comparative analysis demonstrated that bacterial application mechanisms significantly influenced asphalt chemical evolution and engineering behavior. The findings indicate that biologically modified asphalt using Escherichia coli possesses considerable potential for sustainable, adaptive, and self-healing pavement systems through optimized bacterial treatment strategies.
