Abstract

Students are expected to comprehend English texts correctly. Meanwhile the students of the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Gido did not understand the texts, could not achieve the minimum competences criterion that has been decided in the school. It was caused by some factors namely lacked of the students’ vocabulary, unable to identify main idea and to determine the generic structure of descriptive text, lacked of getting the important points when reading the text. The purpose of this research is to increase the students’ ability in reading comprehension. In increasing students’ reading ability, the researchers used Discovery Learning Strategy and applied it Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was conducted in two cycles, there were four steps in conducting the research, namely: planning, action, observation and reflection. The result of the data in Cycle I showed that there were 2 students (6%) categorized in “Poor level”, 12 students (37%) categorized in “Less level”, 14 students (42%) categorized in “Enough level, 3 students (9%) categorized in “Good level, and 2 students (6%) categorized in “Very good level”. The mean mark in Cycle I was 50.91. There were still many students who failed and their level was low and really needed to be increased in the next cycle. Cycle II, no one of the students was categorized into less, poor, and enough levels, but 30 students (90.9%) categorized in “Good level, 3 students (9.10%) categorized in “Very good level”. The mean mark in Cycle II was 85.15. Based on the results of the research, it is concluded that Discovery Learning Strategy can increase the students’ ability in reading comprehension in descriptive text at eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Gido in 2022/2023.

Abstract

Vocabulary can be defined as the total amount of words that are necessary to convey ideas and express the speaker' intent. Vocabulary is the essential thing we need to master in mastering a language. However, in reality there are many students who lack of vocabulary. Many students said that English difficult to understand. And they can’t categorize the English vocabulary also. The purpose of this research is to increase students’ vocabulary mastery by using Hyponym Game. In this research the researcher conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. The subject of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat which consist of 26 students. This research was applied in two cycles. In Cycle I, there were 1 (4%) students who got score among 0-49 classified as “Very Poor Criteria”, 5 (19%) students got classified as “Poor Criteria”, 8 (31%) students classified as “Average Criteria”, there were 12 (46%) students classified as “Good Criteria” and no one students who reached the “Excellent Criteria”. Moreover the average of students’ mark in Cycle I was 63,46. In Cycle II, there were 14 (54%) students classified as “Excellent Criteria”, 10 (38%) students classified as “Good Criteria”, 1 (4%) students who classified as “Average Criteria”, there were 1 (4%) students classified as “Poor Criteria” and no one students who reached the “Very Poor Criteria”. The average of students’ mark was 80,19. Based on the result the researcher concluded that implementetaion of Hyphonymy game increase students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

In advancing education, an effort is needed in running it. One of them is by utilizing technological advances that have been very developed along with the passage of time so far. In addition to the utilization of technology, improvements are also needed in terms of educational tools used such as innovation in learning, and teacher creativity in teaching in the classroom. Video Learning Media is one of the learning media that is often used. Video can be used as a learning media that contains educational content that can help students learn. Based on observations, researchers found that students sometimes feel less interested in the material being taught and students are also less interested in understanding the contents of textbooks. The formulation of the problem in this study is how much interest do students have in video learning media in class X SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023? The method used in this research is qualitative analysis. The research data collection used field notes, questionnaires, and documentation. After analyzing the results of the research findings, it is concluded that the application of video learning media to students learning interest at SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli made students interested. Animation, music, sound and clear discussion made students like video learning media, beside that, it was easy for students to better understand the visualized learning. Teachers can also use videos as their learning media, which of course attracts students' interest in the material presented and affect students learning outcomes.

Abstract

In learning process that occurred at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Tuhemberua, the students need to master vocabulary in English learning. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to describe how the teacher applies flash card to teach vocabulary to the students and to find out the students’ problem in learning vocabulary through flash card at tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Tuhemberua in 2022/2023. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. Data were obtained from observation sheet and field notes which were then analyzed using after the lecturer used flash card by the English teacher and from interviews for tenth grade students and English teacher. The results showed that students’ problem was the type of interaction carried out during the English learning process and the students still do not have connotation and collocation as good as possible in daily life. Therefore they need good method to encourage them to study effectively. Furthermore, the influencing factors are the students still dislike learning vocabulary; they responded that they just study vocabulary when the time of English course takes place in the class.

Abstract

Writing exercises can be used to introduce students to a literary text, to motivate and help them to create their understanding of the text, and articulate their own interpretation of the text. Writing exercise is primarily on grammar, students will get good marks if the texts are free from errors or have only just very few errors. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to know the types of writing exercises in the English textbook and to know the compatibility based on the syllabus. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. This research is about content analysis design. The data was collected by using documentation. The steps to analyze the exercises are reading the exercises suggested by the syllabus, identifying the number of writing exercises in English textbook and classifying based on the competency and skill which emphasizes in the exercise.After observing the English textbook, then matching it with the 2013 curriculum, the researcher found several types of writing exercises and counted the compatibility with the syllabus. First, the researcher found 4 types of writing exercises in the English textbook, which is (a) Completing texts/sentences, (b) Writing sentence dealing with grammar, (c) Writing short functional text, and (d) Developing vocabulary into sentences. Second, the compatibility of writing exercises in English textbook with the syllabus, the result show that the percentages offer to the schema of quality classification by Arikunto is 71%. It means the score is good, and the textbook can be used as a media in the learning process. From this result, it can be concluded that this textbook compatible with the 2013 curriculum and can be recommended as teaching-learning media in the class.

Abstract

Reading was a part of four skills in mastering English that should be taught at school because it an important skill to be mastered. In learning English there were four basic skills that should be mastered by students. They were listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reading had to be mastered by students because it could help students got a lot of information and could increase their knowledge for example by reading; the students were expected to build their own comprehension of the text. Based on the observation that was done by researcher in SMP Negeri 3 Gunungsitoli, especially in the eighth grade, most of the students could not achieve the MCC 70. Problems faced by students in learning reading comprehension: the students lacked of vocabulary, the students were not able to identified the topic of the recount text, the students lacked an understanding of the meaning of words in the text, the students could not know the generic structure of the recount text. The research did aim to address students’ problems in reading comprehension through shared reading strategy. This research used a quantitative method and used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design which consists of planning, action, observation, reflection. This research was carried out two cycles and each cycle was conducted two meetings. In cycle I showed that there were 20 students who did not pass the MCC out of 30 students and the average student score was 51.66. In addition, in Cycle I there were results from student evaluations with the lowest score of 20 and the highest score of 85. In Cycle II, all students had passed the MCC out of 30 students and with an average student score of 85.16 and there was a lowest score of 70 and the highest score of 100. Based on the results of the study, the researcher concluded that the used of shared reading strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension skill.

Abstract

Student activeness in the learning process is very important because it encourages their deeper and more meaningful engagement with the subject matter. The problem of student activeness in learning is a challenge that is often faced in the world of education, where students are less involved or actively participate in the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study is to explore how blended learning can stimulate students' activeness especially in the English learning process to class A, sixth semester students of English education study program at University of Nias. To conduct this research, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through interviews. The results of the data obtained about Blended learning stimulating students activeness in English teaching-learning process is Blended learning in English classes enhances students participation and activeness by utilizing online platforms and face to face group for interactive discussions and activities. With the results of this study, it is hoped that the teaching-learning methods carried out can vary and be tailored to the needs and interests of students such as this blended learning method so that students are more enthusiastic and comfortable when learning, especially when the teaching-learning process is taking place.

Abstract

The rapid technology advances in education have a significant impact on students' social interactions and mental health. Mobile phones, especially those used in teaching, provide flexible and accessible learning options, but if unwise can negatively impact social interactions and mental health. Excessive use of mobile phones can increase the risk of loneliness, anxiety and hopelessness among students and can negatively impact mental health, reduce the quality of social interactions and negatively impact academic performance. This study used quantitative methods with questionnaire techniques to collect data involving 32 sixth-semester students of the English Education Study Program. The researchers found the data results showed that most agreed that stress, tension and sleep disturbances were caused by unwise mobile phone use. This highlights the need for better education to address mobile phone misuse and encourages future researchers to find ways to manage mobile phone use wisely among university students.
