Abstract

Synthetic insecticide which is commonly used to control pest has negative impact to human health and environment. Besides, it is not effective to prevent pest. However, the usage of insecticide made of plant can provide an alternative because it has less side effects and easy degradation in nature. The Nimba plant (Azadirachta indica) is know to have insecticide element, anti-eating, and able to disturb the growth of insects. This research was carried out at the laboratory of plant protection Faculty of Agriculture and the Laboratory of Biology Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Riau University. The research was carried out by factorial experiment in Completely Randomized Design with three factors, seven levels, and five replications. The three factors were the spraying of nimba leaves extract on the larvae Spodoptera litura by different solvent and water thinner which were methanol solvent and acetone thinner, methanol solvent and water thinner, and water solvent and water thinner. The treatment of each factor resulted in the different extract concentration of nimba leave. Those are 0%, 1%, 3%, 6%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The result of research proved that nimbi leave extract using methanol solvent and acetone thinner had better result in poisoning pest. At 1% concentration level it was effective to prevent larvae S. litura which was equivalent with the concentration of 15% nimbi leave extract with methanol solvent and water thinner, and also with 20% nimbi leave extract with water solvent and water thinner.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Endophytes Bacillus sp. and potassium (K), and get the best combination in inducing stem rot disease and growth of oil palm seedlings. This research was conducted at BioCertilizer and Biopesticide Industrial Unit (BICCOM) of Riau University with experimentally using Factorial Randomized Design (RAL) with two factors, 3 replications. The first factor was the concentration of Endophytes Bacillus sp., B1 (3,37x1011 cfu/ml), B2 (2,98x1012 cfu/ml), B3 (2.79x1013 cfu/ml). The second factor was the K dose, consisting of 4 levels: K0 (without K), K1 (0.1 g/polybag), K2 (0.25 g/polybag), K3 (0.5 g/polybag). The data obtained were analyzed statistically with anova and DMRT 5%. The parameters observed were incidence of symptoms, disease intensity, salicylic acid concentration, seed height, leaf number, base diameter, root shoot ratio and seedlings dry weight. The results indicate that Endophytes Bacillus sp. and K fertilizer and single factor K fertilizer did not affect all parameters. Single factor Endophytes Bacillus sp. are able to inhibit the emergence of early symptoms, reduce disease intensity, salicylic acid concentration, seed height, number of leaves, stem diameter and dry weight of seedlings. Combination of Endophytes Bacillus sp. 3.37x1011 cfu/ml and K 0.25 g/polybag tend to increase the number of leaves, stem diameter and dry weight of seedlings.

Abstract

Gold snail (Pomacea canaliculata L.) is the main pest of rice plants in Empat Balai Village, Kuok District, Kampar Regency. Farmers in Empat Balai Village experience gold snail infestation every year, which has an impact on production. The purpose of community service activities is to conduct community service by counseling and controlling carp pests in rice fields by utilizing local wisdom in Empat Balai Village. The methods in this service are survey, consolidation, counseling and field practice. The counseling was held at Mushallah Miftahul Jannah in Pulau Empat Hamlet, while the field practice was at the farmer’s house and rice fields in Empat Balai Village. The material provided was about bioecology and how to control the carp snail pest. It was emphasized that the recommended control carp pests are the management of carp pests in the egg phase, because one group of eggs has 500 eggs and control is easier in the egg phase. Control in the egg phase includes making drainage or small ditches, installing bamboo stakes so that the snails lay their eggs there, and collecting the eggs once a week. In the snail phase, involves setting up attractant plant traps (gadung tuber leaf, papaya leaf, and banana leaf), kalambuai traps (kaltrap), installing of irrigated nets, utilizing ducks, and vegetable molluscicides. In addition, preventive measure was taken, such as planting older seedlings. The farmers were very enthusiastic about this activity. As a result, farmers gained additional knowledge about gold snail pests and how to control them, improve farmers skills on gold snail pests control methods by utilizing local wisdom.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Acacia is a type of plant that recommended for development of industrial forest plantations (HTI) especially pulp and paper. According to Central Statistics Agency (2020), area of acacia HTI in Riau Province 2019 was 2,335,450 ha with a log output of 31,509,228m3 and total pulp export of 2,952.4 million US dollars. The need for paper pulp has increased every year. Problems in acacia nursery area is presence of disease caused by Xanthomonas sp. Bacterial leaf blight causes significant losses in procurement of acacia seedlings, so we need an alternative control with environmentally friendly and sustainable by utilizing potential of biological agents in controlling leaf blight. This aimed to study potential of endophytic bacterial isolates against bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas sp. by adopting a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The results showed that there were 9 isolates of endophytic bacteria that had inhibitory power against Xanthomonas sp., bacterial isolates in hypersensitivity test did not show symptoms of necrosis in tobacco leaves, results of physiological and biochemical tests on levan test and VP test showed differences in reaction results on tested endophytic bacteria isolates and it was found isolate of endophytic bacteria B8 was effective as an antagonist agent in controlling disease. Keywords: acacia; characterization; endophytic bacteria; in vitro; in vivo; Xanthomonas sp.
