Abstract

Abstract

Oryctes rhinoceros is one of the main pests in oil palm plantations. Biological control using Metharizium anisopliae has great potential to control O. rhinoceros larvae which are usually found in organic matter. This study aims to obtain the best organic compost material for the development of M. anisopliae as biological control against O. rhinoceros larvae. This research was conducted with a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 6 treatments, each treatment was repeated 5 times to obtain 30 experimental units. Each unit contained 10 O. rhino larvae. The concentration of M. anisopliae was 50 g / L of distilled water. The treatments of organic media consisted of 6 setting media, as follows: Oil Palm Empty Fruit bunch (OPEFB),  rice husk, sawdust, ½ part  OPEFB + ½ sawdust, ½ part OPEFB + ½ part rice husk, and ½ part rice husk + ½ part sawdust. The observations included the time of initial death, time of death, daily mortality, total mortality, changes in behavior and larvae morphology. Chemical analysis of OPEFB, temperature, and humidity were recorded. The results showed that compost from sawdust media had the tendency as the best media for the development of Metarizhium anisopliae. It had ability to infect O. rhinoceros larvae which caused larvae infection 72.50%.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to know the effect of several concentrations of Bacillus subtilis and to obtain a concentration capable of inducing tomatoes from attack by Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria. This study was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design (RAL) with 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatment used was the concentration of Bacillus subtilis which consisted of B0 = no use of Bacillus subtilis, B1 = concentration of Bacillus subtilis 106 cells.ml-1, B2 = concentration of Bacillus subtilis 107 cells.ml-1, B3 = concentration of Bacillus subtilis 108 cells.ml-1, B4 = concentration of Bacillus subtilis 109 cells.ml-1. The parameters observed were the number of colonies of Bacillus subtilis in the growth medium, the concentration of salicylic acid content, disease intensity, plant height, stem diameter, and weight of fruit. The results showed that the concentration of Bacillus subtilis in each treatment was able to induce tomato plant resistance to Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria and gave significantly different results on the number of colonies on soil medium, the concentration of salicylic acid content, disease intensity, plant height, steam diameter, and weight of fruit.

Abstract

Gold snail (Pomacea canaliculata L.) is the main pest of rice plants in Empat Balai Village, Kuok District, Kampar Regency. Farmers in Empat Balai Village experience gold snail infestation every year, which has an impact on production. The purpose of community service activities is to conduct community service by counseling and controlling carp pests in rice fields by utilizing local wisdom in Empat Balai Village. The methods in this service are survey, consolidation, counseling and field practice. The counseling was held at Mushallah Miftahul Jannah in Pulau Empat Hamlet, while the field practice was at the farmer’s house and rice fields in Empat Balai Village. The material provided was about bioecology and how to control the carp snail pest. It was emphasized that the recommended control carp pests are the management of carp pests in the egg phase, because one group of eggs has 500 eggs and control is easier in the egg phase. Control in the egg phase includes making drainage or small ditches, installing bamboo stakes so that the snails lay their eggs there, and collecting the eggs once a week. In the snail phase, involves setting up attractant plant traps (gadung tuber leaf, papaya leaf, and banana leaf), kalambuai traps (kaltrap), installing of irrigated nets, utilizing ducks, and vegetable molluscicides. In addition, preventive measure was taken, such as planting older seedlings. The farmers were very enthusiastic about this activity. As a result, farmers gained additional knowledge about gold snail pests and how to control them, improve farmers skills on gold snail pests control methods by utilizing local wisdom.

Abstract

Development of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) requires high-quality seeds. Adding growth substance from Bacillus sp. endophytes is expected to increase the growth of cocoa seedlings. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the ability of Bacillus sp. endophytes to produce Indole Acetic Acid (IAA) hormone, evaluate the effects of Bacillus sp. endophytes application on growth of cocoa seedling, and obtain the best concentration to increase growth of cocoa seedling. The experiments were conducted in the laboratory and in the field from June to October 2015. The study was conducted in two stages: in vitro and in vivo. The first experiment tested the ability of Bacillus sp. endophytes to produce IAA using tryptophan enriched picovskaya liquid medium and non-enriched tryptophan. The results from the first experiment showed that all Bacillus sp. endophytes produce IAA hormones. The second experiment tested the concentrations of Bacillus sp. endophytes to improve the growth of cocoa seedlings. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design consisting of 5 treatments and 4 replications, i.e., without treatment of Bacillus sp., and concentrations of 1011, 1012, 1013, and 1014 cfu/mL. The parameters observed were the number of bacterial colonies of Bacillus sp. endophytes, cocoa seed height, stem diameter, number of leaves and planting area of 4 month cocoa seedlings. The results from the second experiment showed that all concentrations of Bacillus sp. endophytes increase the growth of cocoa seedlings. The concentration of 1011 cfu/mL produced more colony in planting medium, increased height, stem diameter, leaf number and leaf area in cocoa seedlings.
