Abstract

This study aimed to develop a differentiated teaching module to enhance students' scientific argumentation skills on chemical bonding material. The method used was Research and Development (R&D) with the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). Validation results from experts showed that the developed differentiated teaching module was highly valid (92% and 94%), very practical (100% and 97%), and effective, with more than 80% of students achieving the minimum competency standard (KKM) and an average score of 88. The improvement in scientific argumentation skills was reflected in the average pre-test score of 64, which increased to 80 in the post-test. Specifically, the indicators of scientific argumentation showed improvement: claims increased from 62.9% to 75.4%, data from 66.3% to 84%, warrants from 67.8% to 82.1%, and backings from 68.4% to 79.4%. The increase in scientific argumentation scores from pre-test to post-test indicates that the developed teaching module was effective in helping students hone their argumentative skills. However, the ability to formulate claims and backings still requires reinforcement, as they demand a more complex understanding. Nevertheless, this improvement suggests that the differentiated teaching module created and implemented can strengthen students' scientific argumentation skills in understanding chemical bonding material, making it recommended for broader application, especially in science education.

Abstract

This study investigates the mediating role of epistemic agency in the relationship between students’ perceptions of constructivist learning environments and their conceptual understanding in Indonesian chemistry classrooms. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. In the quantitative phase, data were collected from 712 high school students across five schools using an adapted Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (CLES) and a three-tier diagnostic chemistry test. Rasch modeling confirmed the strong psychometric properties of the adapted CLES, while structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that epistemic agency significantly mediated the relationship between classroom environment perceptions and conceptual understanding. In the qualitative phase, thematic analysis of interviews with 12 selected students uncovered three dominant themes contributing to misconceptions: limited dialogic space, lack of contextualization, and teacher-dominated instruction. The integration of both data strands demonstrates that epistemic agency is not only influenced by pedagogical practices but also shaped by cultural norms. These findings extend the dual-path learning framework by embedding agency as a key mechanism for conceptual change. Pedagogically, the results underscore the need for dialogic, student-centered learning environments that promote active participation and reduce misconceptions. Policy-wise, the findings align with the OECD Learning Compass 2030 and Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar curriculum, emphasizing the importance of agency-oriented strategies in achieving global education standards.

Abstract

Redox reactions are a type of chemical material that contains many concepts and rules that are recognized as difficult to comprehend and comprehend and often give rise to misconceptions in students. This research aims to find out the misconceptions that occur among students in understanding redox reaction material and find out the source of the causes of students' misconceptions. The method used in the research is descriptive qualitative. This research was carried out in the odd semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. The subjects of this research were class XII MIPA students at SMAN 1 Limboto with a total sample of 181 people. Identification of misconceptions is carried out using a five-tier multiple-choice test instrument. Student answers from the test are then analyzed and categorized based on the student's level of conception. The research results show that the average percentage of students' conceptions on redox reaction material is 28.6% understanding the concept, 48.2% misconceptions, and 23.2% not understanding the concept. Apart from that, the highest cause of misconceptions comes from personal thoughts at 91.1%.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) learning model on temperature and heat concepts on student learning outcomes. This research is experimental research, with the research design used being a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sampling technique used in this research was the total sampling technique. The population in this study was all class VII of MTs Al-Khairaat Kwandang for the 2023/2024 academic year. The sample in this study consisted of 3 classes, namely Class VII B as the experimental class, Class VII A as replication 1, and Class VII C as replication 2, where the experimental and replication classes were determined randomly by drawing lots. Research data was collected using test techniques, then the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, which include normality tests, hypothesis tests, and n-gain analysis. The results obtained for all sample classes, the average for class VII students is greater than the Criteria for Achieving Learning, which is shown by the average value of the experimental class of 85.49, replication 1 of 84.18, and replication 2 of 82.92. Based on the results of the course average normalized gain obtained by the experimental class was 0.78, replication 1 was 0.76, and replication 2 was 0.75, which means that all sample classes are in the high category. Thus, the PBL learning model has a significant effect on student learning outcomes in concepts of temperature and heat.

Abstract

Green chemistry is a relevant approach in supporting meaningful and sustainability-oriented chemistry learning. This study aims to (1) analyze the implementation and integration of green chemistry principles in chemistry learning, (2) analyze its role in realizing meaningful learning, (3) analyze its impact on students’ conceptual understanding and environmental awareness attitudes, and (4) analyze the challenges and opportunities of its implementation. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature review design of accredited national journal articles and reputable international journals from the 2020–2026 period. Out of 40 identified articles, 24 articles were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that (1) the implementation of green chemistry is carried out through active learning, development of instructional materials, utilization of technology, and contextual approaches; (2) green chemistry plays a role in realizing meaningful learning by connecting concepts to environmental issues; (3) its integration has a positive impact on students’ conceptual understanding and environmental awareness attitudes, although the level of improvement is generally moderate; and (4) its implementation still faces challenges related to teacher competence, learning resources, and curriculum support, but it also has opportunities for further development. The conclusion of this study is that green chemistry plays a strategic role in realizing meaningful chemistry learning by linking chemical concepts to real environmental problems and supporting sustainable chemistry education.
