Abstract

The study investigates student engagement in hybrid English-speaking classes at an Indonesian university, emphasizing synchronous and asynchronous learning. Hybrid learning combines live (synchronous) and flexible (asynchronous) methods to enhance student engagement in cognitive, behavioral, and emotional dimensions. Conducted as a qualitative study, this research involved 20 second-semester students from the Faculty of Language and Literature at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews to explore students’ engagement in hybrid English-speaking classes across synchronous and asynchronous learning. The findings reveal that hybrid learning fosters high levels of cognitive engagement by promoting active participation, critical thinking, and access to resources supported by responsive lecturers. Behavioral engagement is similarly enhanced through interactive digital tools and inclusive class discussions, encouraging frequent practice and skill reinforcement. Emotional engagement, however, varies, as some students benefit from the flexibility of online learning, while others face challenges due to reduced face-to-face interaction with lecturers. Key challenges identified include maintaining consistent motivation in virtual environments, managing distractions in home settings, and addressing feelings of being overlooked due to limited real-time lecturer attention. Additionally, technology dependency and variable comfort levels with hybrid learning pose challenges for engagement. The study concludes that effective hybrid learning designs that address cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement can significantly enhance student involvement and learning outcomes. These insights contribute to a better understanding of engagement dynamics in hybrid English-speaking courses, offering practical implications for designing more effective learning experiences. However, the study's focus on a specific group of English-speaking students at one institution limits how broadly the findings can be applied. To better understand the strengths and challenges of hybrid learning, future studies should consider a more diverse sample, mix qualitative and quantitative data, and look at how instructor involvement impacts engagement across different learning environments.

Abstract

Radio remains an important communication medium in the digital era; however, practice-based broadcasting skills among students are still limited due to a lack of direct field experience. This community service activity aims to improve students’ understanding and skills in radio broadcasting through a practice-based training approach. The method applied is experiential learning, which includes classroom theoretical briefing, a visit to Radio Telstar 102.7 FM, limited on-air practice, and follow-up classroom training for reinforcement. The results indicate an improvement in participants’ understanding of radio production processes, communicative delivery skills, as well as awareness of journalistic ethics and digital media utilization. In addition, participants demonstrated increased confidence and active participation in communication practices. This activity provides contextual learning through the integration of theory and practice, although it is limited by time constraints and the scope of practical involvement. Therefore, practice-based training shows strong potential for further development in enhancing students’ competencies in broadcasting

Abstract

Speaking is an essential component of English language learning, yet many EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students continue to struggle with fluency, confidence, and engagement in speaking activities. The integration of digital learning media is increasingly seen as a potential solution to these challenges, particularly through the use of audiovisual platforms such as Canva. This study aims to explore the perceptions of English language teachers and students regarding the use of Canva-based audiovisual media in improving students’ English speaking skills and supporting effective classroom management. Conducted at Pondok Pesantren Putra IMMIM Makassar, this qualitative study involved one English teacher and ten eighth-grade students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. The findings showed that teachers perceived Canva as a practical and innovative tool that supports structured lesson planning, increases student engagement, and aligns with 21st-century educational goals. Canva’s visual and audio features help improve focus, minimize distractions, and deliver content more effectively. Meanwhile, students gave positive perceptions, stating that Canva made speaking lessons more enjoyable, improved their understanding of the material, and increased their confidence in speaking. Although some technical limitations were noted, both teachers and students agreed that Canva significantly improved the overall learning environment. The study concludes by recommending consistent integration of audiovisual digital media to support teaching quality and speaking proficiency in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study investigates how the integration of the Restitution Triangle with local wisdom from Bugis-Makassar culture supports the development of positive discipline in English learning. Conducted at a senior high school in Makassar, this qualitative study employed interviews, observations, and documentation to explore how students internalize responsibility and respectful behavior. The findings revealed that the implementation of restitution strategies, aligned with cultural values such as Sipakatau, Sipakainge', and Sipakalebbi, significantly contributed to students' behavioral awareness and self-regulation. The culturally adapted restitution model enabled students to reflect on their actions, repair harm, and engage actively in language learning. This research highlights the potential of combining restorative approaches with indigenous values to enhance classroom discipline and learner autonomy.

Abstract

This study investigates the reality of technology integration in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms at SMA 5 Baraka, Enrekang, Indonesia. Although educational technology has become a central component of contemporary pedagogy, implementation in peripheral and resource-constrained schools often remains inconsistent. The study aimed to explore actual classroom practices, teacher and student perceptions, and contextual barriers affecting sustainable integration. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, student focus-group discussions, and document analysis. Data were analyzed thematically through coding, categorization, and triangulation. The findings indicate that technology integration occurred primarily through smartphones, projectors, WhatsApp, YouTube, and presentation software. Teachers perceived technology as beneficial for increasing motivation, facilitating listening exposure, and improving instructional efficiency. Students expressed positive attitudes toward multimedia-supported learning environments. However, unstable internet connectivity, inadequate devices, limited professional training, time constraints, and inconsistent institutional support restricted deeper pedagogical innovation. Most practices remained at functional levels of substitution and augmentation rather than transformative use. The study concludes that meaningful technology integration requires infrastructure readiness, sustained teacher development, and context-sensitive policy support. These findings contribute empirical insight into digital inequality and pedagogical adaptation in Indonesian EFL settings.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of web-based distance learning (WBDL) in higher education has significantly changed English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, particularly in universities that implemented a distance learning system where flexibility and technological integration are vital. While most research focuses on technology or students, this study explores how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) tutors at an Indonesian university perceive web-based distance learning. Employing a descriptive qualitative design within an interpretive paradigm conceptually grounded in Qiong's (2017) six-dimension framework, the study analyzes interview data from two experienced tutors. The tutor was intentionally chosen to facilitate an in-depth, rich, and detailed comparative analysis of their subjective psychological perceptions, aligning with the study's interpretive paradigm, which seeks depth over generalizability. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, then thematically analyzed with multiple rounds of open coding, thematic grouping, and interpretive synthesis in order to establish how tutors' perceptions reflected their negotiation between institutional expectations and professional agency. The results illustrate a key tension reflecting the study's central dichotomy: one tutor prioritizes institutional structure and professionalism, while the other emphasizes pedagogical autonomy and learner-centeredness. The study concludes that successful web-based distance learning requires a dynamic psychological balance between the system and autonomy. Practically, these findings suggest that institutions must move beyond mere technical training and provide robust psychological and affective support, recognizing tutors as critical agents in negotiating this balance rather than just as system operators.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students' engagement in learning English using the flipped learning model at MTs. Yapit Tonrorita. The flipped learning model was chosen for its potential to increase students' preparedness and interactive activity during in-class time. Employing a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach, the study found that students generally exhibited positive engagement despite facing some obstacles. In terms of behavioral engagement, students showed good attention and cooperation, especially in group work; however, a gender gap was observed, with female students being more active in verbal discussions while male students remained passive. In conclusion, the Flipped Learning model effectively boosted students' behavioral and emotional engagement. The study implies the need for tailored instructional strategies within the flipped learning model to specifically address the observed gender gap in participation and mitigate student cognitive reliance on the teacher.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of using short stories on students’ reading comprehension. A quantitative method with a pre-experimental design was used, involving 30 eighth-grade students selected through random sampling. A reading test based on short stories was administered to assess five comprehension indicators: main idea, detailed information, inference, vocabulary, and reference. A pre-test was conducted to measure students’ initial abilities, followed by a treatment through short story-based instruction, and a post-test was conducted to measure improvement. The average pre-test score was 52.86, while the post-test average increased to 76.16. A paired sample t-test showed a significant difference (p = 0.000 < 0.05), indicating that the treatment had a positive effect. Among all indicators, the most notable improvement was in reference (from 46.67% to 90%), followed by vocabulary (from 55% to 84%). These results suggest that short stories effectively support the development of students’ reading comprehension, especially in helping them identify references and understand vocabulary in context. Overall, the use of short stories not only improved comprehension scores but also contributed to more consistent performance among students. Therefore, short stories can be considered a beneficial tool in teaching reading comprehension to eighth-grade students at SMPN 26 Makassar.
